Saddle soap and mink oil is what I use for every piece of leather I own. Jackets. Saddle bags. Leather pants.

I also clean with saddle soap, then condition with mink oil. Occasional touch up with leather cream. I also like to use a wax shoe polish. A layer of wax really helps bead off moisture.

My African Troopers arrived last Friday. Treated them with Neatsfoot oil and Mink oil so far, Sno-seal eventually. I prefer to treat my boots before I get them muddy. It makes them easier to clean. It's always nice to see a job done right.
@chinatownboy748229 күн бұрын
I oil every boot right out of the box. It helps soften the leather for break in. Oil and water don't mix. If the leather is oiled, water will not soak into it to dry it. You can also use leather cream which contains lanolin. It won't hurt. A coat of carnauba wax paste polish will allow moisture to bead off.

Nice clean and condition video. I’d like these Numzaan’s for when I move back to a place with a garden. They seem perfect for medium duty work with their real leather cap toes. Right now I just need my service boots for office work and suburban hikes. Thanks for another worthwhile video, Teik. 👍🏼

The tongue folds over the metal on the speedhooks...Nicks always pinch if I dont fold the tongue just right :) I love the Jim Green design of this. I found good old fashioned liquid dish soap on a rag wiped in, then buffed off with a damp rag cleans just as good and doesn't leave waxy gunk like saddle soap. Let dry then condition with whatever wax or oil product.

Heya Teik I was wondering how your Numzaan boots had been getting along so I was glad to see this vid. I have had mine for about a month now and have been using them as a motorcycle and general kick around boot and loving them so far. I did get mine with the lug sole and just so you and your viewers know the lug sole on the Numzaan is a much softer compound than on their other lug sole offerings. Gareth talks about the change in several of his vids talking about them. Anyway always great and informative work you do here. Thanks for your efforts!

Would it be out of the range of the channel to review their vellie or shoelli? I'm interested in these, and you have the most thorough and unbiased reviews by far.
@herkulays8380Ай бұрын
I too would be interested in this. I wish for something that is as light as a sneaker yet has the stability of a boot. Already have a pair of african rangers but want something that's not a stiff pair of boots but not as flimsy as a sneaker!
@christianjondahl7198Ай бұрын
I have both and enjoy both. The Velli has the feel of the old Skate shoes I used to ware when young as far as fit and being tough. The sholiee is a much narrower last and is more like the fit of a pair of old vans as far as simple and low. Both are EXTREMELY wel built and I enjoy and ware both often. The Vellies are way more comfortable though.

Do mink oil waterproof? Thanks anyone
@herkulays8380Ай бұрын
@@cormac1000 Yes mink oil does waterproof but you must apply one coat after a good scrubbing, two coats on any stitching and let it sit overnight then in the morning use a horsehair brush to buff it. The mink oil will not last forever but will waterproof the leather for awhile. Do keep in mind this will also darken your leather quite noticeably!

Great job in sharing the detail. Enjoyable Sunday evening watch. Always wonder if one should also clean the inner leather / fabric with damp water and saddle soap, follow with some leather conditioning? Especially when the fibre of the leather is facing the inner shoe (don’t know the better description), wouldn’t it help absorption and protect the leather better? Thanks!

@@kd5byb The funny thing is that when you find the ingredients list, a bottle of mink oil also has lanolin, silicone, and neatsfoot oil.

@@sheckydiamond7533 Absolutely - depending on the brand, could be a LOT more in there as well. I can't seem to find my mink oil bottle at the moment, but it said "contains no silicone" and pretty sure the ingredient was only mink oil. Interestingly, while looking around, I saw a bottle of "Neatsfoot Oil Compound" which could have just about anything in there! Of course, you have to trust the manufacturer, they could pulling a fast one saying one thing and the bottle having a mixture.

I think the argument that leather doesn't get permanently damaged by exposure to water comes from the observation of leatherworkers wetmolding leather by soaking the leather in water beforehand. However, it must also be noted that the wetmolded leathers are then left to air dry for days or even weeks. Only saturate your leathers with water if you're determined to not be bothering it until it is completely dried.

Obenauff's is a wonderful conditioner and water repellent. It will slightly darken leather. Personally I wouldn't worry with work boots. I used a similar product for decades before doing a side-by-side with Obenauff's and the difference was remarkable. The leather seems more deeply nourished and the surface smoothed, maybe that's the beeswax.
