I got my Note Air 3c for a couple of days now. It is my first e-ink tablet (but I got a pre-2020 kindle paperwhite for several years now). I was surprised how good the color rendition is - I watched so many reviews about how bad it is, how "muted" the colors look etc. But it turned out that for me, I actually prefer it to my LCD tablet. The colors don't look so overly saturated; only real downside is the absence of a real red and yellow. But I do love how web pages look and feel on the device. I also find the writing experience to be incredibly satisfying. I use my Samsung S7 for 4 years now for note taking, and while not bad, it's nowhere near to what the Note Air 3c feels like. Not only how the writing feels but also the fact that if you look at your sketches and notes, it always looks like a small box with a paper film inside on which you wrote.

*Another brilliant device by Boox.* However, although the rate the the unit burns through a battery charge would not be a concern to me... as it gets you through the day, the speed it cycles through battery charges would, unless the user can replace the battery themselves. I'm guessing it'll suffer around 800 charges before it starts to wane, and if you're recharging it every day _[which I admit most wouldn't]_ that limits the device to just over two years before the battery is unable to give you a full days's use between charges.

@bellissimo4520

Background light is the main power drain, as one YT showed who performed very detailled tests. Fast display refresh only accounted for about 8-10% faster battery drain. The light is the big power sucker. And there's the problem of color displays - they need a lot more background light, because they are inherently darker. Which is why I don't want a color display in my next e-ink tablet anymore. To me, color isn't really that useful, and I'd rather have much longer battery runtime.

NA3C Battery life comparison (as per Voja reviews/tests): writing 7h, reading 14h; TabX: writing 12h, reading 18h; NA2+: writing 10h, reading 80h; Nova Air 1(2): writing 5.6h, reading 50h... There is NO big difference in writing batery life (arround 30%)... There is BIG difference in books reading! Conclusion: use a dedicated e-reader for books... In my case Nova Air 2 (mainly reading and occasionally writing "on the go"). Use NA3C for writing and PDF reading/annotating... In my case for work (structural reports/calculations)... I ordered Note Air 3 C. I have Tab X and Nova Air 2. For 2 years I used Note Air (1). All my buying decisions are/were based on MDG reviews. Thank you Voja!

I got my na2 plus 2 weeks ago, just before these came out. Had a little moment of regret, but seeing the battery life I now regret nothing. The sole reason I bought the na2 plus was cause of battery life and no need to use the front light as much. For the rest I have a samsung galaxy tab s6 lite (2022) which has been my main device for past year and I love it. Besides the fact that it's unusable outside for reading, at night it's too bright and my eyes have been pissed at the abuse I put them through. Also, charging it every 2-3 days has become a nuisance, the times I took it out of the bag at work to take notes only to realize it's low on battery have been too many. So far I only charged my na2 plus once and used it way more than the tablet, which has been charged 3 or 4 times in the the past 2 weeks. Pretty happy.

I'm in the same situation. Today is the last day to return my Note Air 2 + on Amazon, I have hesitated a lot, I have it reset and packed but I don't think I'm going to exchange it. This is still a e-ink tablet. Even thought you can watch videos and play games that not the reason your buy it for. It’s for reading and writing mostly. If you use it for that. The battery won’t be that bad. When was the last time you read or wrote for 8 hours straight? I have a book page and the battery didn’t seem the greatest at first. But it can last weeks or days. It depends how much you use it, brightness, and wifi. I have my book library downloaded on the device and have the wifi off most of the time.

I really like my Ultra Tab but this review has me seriously tempted to get the Air 3C for handwritten notes, reading PDFs (in color), and ebooks, which are my top 3 activities on my Tab Ultra. The writing experience on the Tab Ultra is meh, and the more paperlike experience and color e-ink PDFs would be welcome improvements. Hopefully with some battery saving tweeks or an "optimize battery mode" could stretch out the battery life depending on the use case.

While battery life is a lot lower than previous generation of those device imo that is an acceptable con for all the advantages. Since you know both Supernote and Boox devices, which one do you think is a better choice for business note taking and organisation, plus some books reading (Kindle app)? Is Supernote better because of focus/clean OS and OCR, or is NA3C better because of colour screen, speed and full Android?

@gulpowizzard Жыл бұрын
@@tymonstrzelczyk1439 nowadays I'd would probably take NA3C(?). I'd have to seriously consider it. I considered NA2Plus when I bought Supernote anyway. I'm a Supernote for a few reasons; 1) better UI - less cluttered and more thought through in my opinion; 2) Can easily work offline and I choose when to sync (that's a con and pro at the same time); 3) Security reasons, I have more faith in Ratta then Boox to gather less if any information; 4) long term support for the device - boox supports device "only" for 2 years. To me Supernote is simply a paper substitute in which I can organize my notes but I'm rarely exporting them. From a business perspective answer yourself whether you want to integrate your notes on the device with 3rd party systems. It will be easier or just you will be able to do it on Boox NA3. Will you need/want to use Office apps like Word to review something - Supernote kind of can do it but... its lackluster. How will you do notes? Might you want to have typed notes converted from speech, which works great or you want to have recordings of meetings in notes. All of those work towards NA3C favor. Both devices have OCR and they're good. Supernote converting handwritten note to text in background is a good thing but... It seems my handwriting and Supernote don't like each other. I just can't use it while I find Boox's OCR great. Kindle and reading is great on any of those devices, maybe in favor of NA3 due to neoreader having lots of customization features

Thanks so much-great review! Really useful seeing all of the battery stats. Assuming BSR is software-driven (vs something more deeply embedded somehow), I hope they can and will continue to evolve it to improve battery impact. I'm still gonna give this one a try, though, since a more affordable than TUC and 300ppi 10" device is what I've been wanting for a long long time. Battery has been a problem for me in the past with devices like Kobo Sage, but the features here are SO GOOD. :) I saw an official employee on Reddit comment that a Note Air 3 *black & white* device is coming by end of the year, *however* if BSR is the new thing from Boox to be expected on all devices, then I'm concerned battery will be an ongoing issue there, too (even with a less dark screen that requires less front light to help with contrast). A mode/toggle capability for BSR would be really important if they can't improve it much more. Anyway, I'll see if I can make it work but feel there may not really be much to do other than wait for Boox to continue innovating and updating their OS.

I don't mind the reduced battery life, half of it is probably compensated by not waiting ages for a page to turn of a website to scroll down to the next paragraph. As well, i don't plan to read or write more than a few hours per day, plenty of hours left to plug in a charger. If i need to be off grid longer, i always carry a big power pack in my backpack anyway.

It's an all day battery, more or less. Better than a laptop. Worse than a tablet. Eh … not awful, but something to consider. Some devices simply have to have a multi-day battery life (for example, a smart watch). A tablet really needs to last a full work day, which this does. I wonder if they release a Pro version with a bigger battery.

I very much appreciate your thorough reviews - it's what got me interested enough to buy one in the first place, which I absolutely do not regret. However, I miss stylus-testing on the tabs/readers with the original magnetic covers attached. You seem to always (or often - I admittedly haven't watched ALL your reviews) add the part about the cover in the end, after all the other testing. My Nova Air 1 gets a lot of spots where the stylus does not work at all. Most prominently near the side magnets (I have the cover with page turning buttons), but also a few areas closer to the center of the screen, because of the weaker magnet in the backplate of the cover.Therefor it can only be used for transportation and reading. I imagine quite a few people would prefer not having to remove the tablet from the cover to draw or take notes. Mine, at least, moves a lot less around with the cover fitted.

Hi Voya :) I have the remarkable 2 and the battery is great, but I only use it as a notetaker. The note 3c can do so much more! But if I used it as a notetaker ONLY, the refresh would be minimal and wifi off for the most. How would the battery be then? This senario would be more comparable battery wise when people are comparing it to other devices and calling it a dealbreaker.

It looks very similar to the Bigme Inknote Color Lite in terms of the physical package and battery size, which I have and also prefer over the clunky & heavy Tab Ultra C. I read more than I write, so the lighter weight is important to me, as is the absence of the Boox camera lump on the back of Tab series. The embedded Bigme cameras don't prevent it from lying flat when writing; this will also be the case for NA 3C with its absence of cameras and thus flat back. Nice review, as always, Voja.

Thank you, Voya, very detailed review, as always. For me this device looks amazing, but the battery life is a deal breaker unfortunately. It is OK with the battery life during writing or serfing, but reading take significant part in my usage scenarios (actually the main - reading & remarks writing with occasional notetaking). So I hope that reading battery life will be improved. For now it looks like very poor for reading experience, as for me. Anyway Air 3C is a good step in design and feature set. It is nearly perfect fr me except this very significant (for me) con related to battery.

Well... I have to admit... I purchased the Note Air 3C... I own an ipad pro, a Scribe and a SuperNote as well... and the more I use the 3C, I'm not sure I even prefer it over the others(!). Reading books on the Scribe are simply much sharper and more pleasant with the great B&W screen. Reading comics are simply more enjoyable on my ipad than the "compromised" color display. And I'm not sure the notetaking on the 3C warrants the extra expense compared to the supernote. I think the darker color screen just doesn't satisfy me :-\ I'll continue to try it out some more, but may end up returning it :( I REALLY want to love this, but... I almost feel like it doesn't excel at anything and is ok for all of 'em. But if you have other devices that excel at each of those activities (reading, notetaking, comics...), this doesn't quite satisfy in anything. Hopefully the next generation of color screens can up the game. I have to rewatch Voja's videos/reviews, but I'm curious what his take on this... i.e. this Boox is "ok" with everything but doesn't excel at anything...? The color display really is starting to underwhelm me the more i use it.
@glenndoren7922
@glenndoren7922 Жыл бұрын
And some of the things that really stand out to me: hand/palm recognition is horrible (it seems to regularly get confused when my palm touches the screen while writing); i'm constantly having to refresh the display when reading on it, else tons of ghosting; perhaps i need to play with the kindle app settings, but it just doesn't feel as sharp/pleasant to read on compared to the scribe; the darker screen (altho when i have a light aimed right on it, it's definitely better)--no question the supernote/scribe/B&W screens just look better in normal lighting. I still want to give this a shot--and see if the color and android features bring more to it that I'm not appreciating so far...

I totally agree with you. The reviews of this device are excellent, but my experience was a little mediocre. The screen is too dark without lights, but when you add lights you can see the pixels in the colour layer so the “paper” looks grainy. The effect this has on the pleasure of using the device was sufficient that I picked up my RM2 and Scribe over the NA3C, so returned it within the window. Maybe I need the extra contrast of a black and white screen. I envy those who don’t. I’m hoping for a 300ppi version of the NA3 soon, or a 300dpi Supernote (or for Amazon to actually develop decent software for the Scribe)
@glenndoren7922

@@davidr1431 Ironically, in the process of comparing the 2 new boox devices to my existing tablets (ipad pro, supernote A5X, Scribe... and I have a RM2 which i simply never use), I've come to really appreciate what those other devices do so well. The ipad pro with pencil and notability... it's just SO GOOD! And frankly the glass feel is mostly a non-issue for me compared to how good the note taking functionality in pristine color is. I still think it's generations beyond the eInk 😕And the supernote has gone up a notch for me after this experience--it just does a bunch of things right (they need to get a 300 DPI screen in 10.3+ size asap). And the Scribe is just such a good writing experience and crisp to look at--if they can just get their software a** in gear (the new pdf export with writing recognition is pretty outstanding tho). I'm convinced--color eInk just doesnt work for me until the device can stand out in some way besides mediocre color. The color has to be outstanding, not fuzzy mediocre. I still have the Tab Ultra C Pro thru the holidays (amazon holiday return window is great)... if the keyboard ever gets here (it now says around december 29!!! WTH), maybe that will convince me. But I'm losing interest...

The other thing that killed the NAC3 for me... yes, the design is nice for note taking (aside from the fuzzy screen issue)... but I couldn't find a good way to easily sync AND WRITE using the NAC3 and my mac or Windows machines. With notability on my ipad and mac, you can work and sync seamlessly between the two. That functionality is what prevents me from using any of my eInk devices as my notetaking tool for serious stuff requiring mac/PC sync. On Boox, is there a good way to do that AND retain the quality writing experience/latency? Boox does not have a PC/mac version of their Notes app, correct? Is one coming out?

I like this device. It is very tempting. I like to read ebooks while lying down typically, and it is easier to hold an 8 inch device in the hand, so that makes the tab mini c about equally tempting. This one is faster, of course, which is nice, and it is nicer to have a larger device for pdf reading. I can read larger pdf files on the 8 inch screens, but it isn't as pleasant (I have a Nova 3 and a Note Air one, but nothing in color). And I suppose I don't really read any colored books, though I might if I got a color screen for my ereader. The idea of a paper-like screen sounds nice, and that is something the tab mini c doesn't seem to have, and the tab mini c has more glare. I don't know. You like this quite a bit more than the tab mini c, which is hard to ignore. On the other hand, I don't know if either device will beat my Sage or my Forma for just e-reading. I think I'm confused at this point, but thank you for all the good information.

Excellent review! Love that you go deep, & that you're an experienced user. That comes across. I have questions: 1. Screen cover: can you recommend a matte screen cover film to work with the Tab Ultra C Pro? I like the idea of the screen cover film on this device. Would such an add-on work on the Tab Ultra C? I like the idea of it feeling like paper, though I confess I look for minimal resistance on paper (I use a Jetstream rollerball w gel ink; not quite stylus on glass feel but pretty close). Samsung's stylus on glass screen (their Fold 4 smartphone) is just a little too slippery. 2. Diffs w Tab Ultra C UI (lack of widgets). I use widgets! That's a significant diff & glossed over in other reviewers' work. I guess I'd want the Tab Ultra C. Thanks. 3. My Daily Organizer looks AWESOME. Well done! Can I link MDO Calendar on Boox w my Samsung phone's default calendar (Samsung Calendar)? Or if I can't, can I run MDO on my Android Samsung phone & synch with MDO on a Boox? Hello Voya. Great review as always. I think you may have missed a big point though. You raved about the fact that the case is able to stand horizontally much like most iPad cases would do but there are other folds in that case. I am 90% sure that the triangle fold would allow you to also use that as a vertical stand. Notice that the back has a fold length wise that is about 1/3 of the back. I am fairly sure that stays attached to the case but the rest of the back could be pulled away, the triangle folded in towards the Note Air, and the far edge of what had been the front attached to the opposite side of the back. That would create an angled vertical stand so you could read/type in portrait mode. I could see that being used particularly for music.

Hi Voya, excellent deep review as always. I was afraid that the battery life would be horrendous and unfortunately I was right. I have moved from the NA2 to the TUC. I have to charge almost daily my TUC, I browse a lot the web, news apps, emails etc. I would not like to have a device that I have to charge twice per day. I am used by now to the TUC, the extra weight without the cover is minimal for reading and I don’t mind the clearer screen. I use it more for reading than writing. I start getting tired of the delays of the old CPU, but this is not enough of a reason to upgrade, especially since the new TUC Pro seems to have also smaller battery than the old TUC. I have the 3.5 beta in my TUC and I love the software upgrades that BOOX has implemented. Unless there is a huge update in the screen technology, I think I will stick to my TUC for the coming years.

Somebody mentioned bellow that an Boox Note Air 3 Black & White should come by the end of the year, and at least will solve the screen brightness issue.Because the battery life problem was there also in reading mode, flipping a page only once every 20 min, with technically just one refresh every 20 min, I do no thing that BSR is the cause of the battery issue ... unless is poorly implemented, and that should be fixable. I have a feeling that new SOC together with the Android 12/OS 3.5 is the actual energy hog which might be harder to fix.

It is disappointing that the battery life is not better. Also, my Kindle Scribe charges up quickly, in no time flat, but I'm reading this Note Air 3 C takes up to 7 hours if charging from something approaching a discharged state. However, on the positive side, since I absolutely love writing on my Scribe, and - if writing on the 3 C is in fact better, as you indicate - that is indeed exciting! For me, the writing experience is tantamount. Your thoughts on how to handle keeping the 3 C power up to par (like charging up one or more times throughout the day) would be interesting.
@MyDeepGuide
@MyDeepGuide 10 ай бұрын
That's not correct. Mine charges in less than two hours. I never measure how much less, but I do know that each time I'd put it to charge, when I check it again in 2 hrs, it's at 100%. Of course that will depend on the type of charger used, so yeah, if you hook it up to the computer for a trickle charge, that will take significantly longer time than if you use a regular mobile phone charger. Writing feel is very similar between the two, but for me and my taste, I prefer the NA3C a bit more, because it has more "give" and doesn't feel as hard as Kindle Scribe.
