My e-ink tablet journey turned out to be a way-station that ultimately led to fountain pens, Japanese papers, Hobonichi planners and painting with fountain pen ink. In 2021 after finding My Deep Guide I bought a Boox Note Air and was happy with it. Now I pick it up maybe 10 times a year. I'm absolutely not in the market for another e-ink device. So here is the weird thing: I watch Voya's videos pretty regularly. Not as much as when I was shopping for an e-ink device, but still a lot. Why? I don't know. Is Voya's voice ASMR? Maybe. Another thing is I love the thoughtfulness of his pros and cons. For this video I skipped straight to it. The no BS approach and the acknowledgement that what works or doesn't work for someone depends on what the person is looking for. And just witnessing Voya do that is inspiring. Thank you Voya, my interest in you and your work has outlasted my interest for e-ink. And oh, I forgot to mention how fun it is to see him giddy/excited about something.

Not to bash on other creators in the E-Ink space, but finally something different and unique. I feel like all the reviews I have seen up until this point have all been people reiterating almost verbatim what Kitt has said and they just release 3 different videos using all of his talking points and have had zero value added / unique takes. Kitt’s reviews were so slanted and biased they needed to come with a health warning. Voja’s review is far more accurate and aligned with my experience. For me the killer use case is reading and annotating technical books with diagrams. I’ve owned many devices and families, and absolutely nothing compares with rMPP. I suffer the inconvenience of extracting books from other formats and converting them to PDFs to get there, because the quality difference is so stark as compared with all the other alternatives. And the pros outweigh the cons for note taking too, knocking out the competition to second place in that arena as well. The size. The overall writing experience. And the colors, used economically and appropriately where you need them.

It is easy to get over the color shifting/refreshing in like five minutes, when you remember that colors on this device just look so incredibly good. There's nothing on the market that comes close. If you don't need color, there are tons of outstanding options available... But this one is just so vibrant and interesting. I think the rM team has hit a home run with this device. I've been using it every day for work and loving it so far!

However, I actually DID return the Paper Pro and went back to the rM2. I carry it around with me for much of the day, and I appreciate the smaller form factor for my use case. Still, the rMPP is a fantastic device and some will appreciate the larger size.

I love how your channel name isn't just a name. I watched your videos at the start of the year when I was looking for an e-ink tablet as a gift for someone else; I eventually ordered a Supernote Nomad, which they seem to love. I've been looking at getting a RM since the RM 1 came out, but never pulled the trigger. I tend to use multiple colors when I format my notes to keep my neurodivergent brain focused, while giving it just a little bit of spice. Hopefully the RM Paper Pro I just ordered can continue to give me that spice I need when taking notes.

I am also the happy owner of a reMarkable Paper pro, and I am very satisfied with its use (I don't mind the slow display for my daily application). The screen is very good, the size is suitable for my activities, even if some colors cannot be displayed depending on the content in PDFs, if black is not really black and the resolution is not maximum at 300 dpi. The same goes for gray-scale issues, which mean that some shades are absolutely not visible. I hope that future updates will improve these aspects in both gray-scale and color.

What has your experience been so far? My iPad syncs articles seamlessly with reference managers like Zotero/Papers, and highlights made with standard iOS PDF readers can easily be collated and extracted. None of that is possible with RMPP, as far as I can tell. I am interested in the e-ink space because I don’t like the writing experience on the iPad, but I’d love to hear more from scientists/academics on their use cases for this device, and whether they ultimately find the limitations too great.

Thanks Voja for the indepth review. Like you said, this is for a select few. Currently I am using the Boox G0 10.3 for reading and the RMPP for writing. I use them side by side while preparing my teaching. Color is imperartive for me while teaching. I use it for highlighting certain parts of emphases and keeping me focused on where I am at while teaching. I also have the RM2 which I loved but to teach I would have to prepare my lesson on the RM2 then print the lesson out to paper for the color. I love my RM 2 but actually didn't like the RM2 Pro pen for the Nibs wore down on me pretty quickly even though I feel as if I don't press down that hard. To me it wore down as quickly as a No 2 pencil would on paper. Also, I guess I am "old school" (70 yrs old) as far as the look of the screen being "grayish". For me it reminds me of Newspaper print. I don't actually mind the black not being totally black or the whites being a little gray. And I don't mind the refresh. Everything about it reminds me of newspaper or as a kid comic books. As far as the refresh, it reminds me of turning a page in a news paper, it was never instantaneous and actually had to fold it around to "handle it". I will say I understand those that grew up with LCD screens may find this distracting. Bottom line, I love the RMPP and will keep it. Would love Boox but really don't like their UI, too confusing for me but like the fact of reading (kindle, Kobo) books on it. So will continue to use both. Thanks again for the great review and your honesty of the pros and cons. I know it will help many on their buying choices.

Thanks for the review, as always well done. ReMarkable just doesn't cut it for me when it comes to usability for the price I pay, so I kept hopping and with the pro, I just gave up. Thanks to your reviews and couple of other reviewers, less than a month ago, I moved to Supernote Noman, and MAN, I'm not going back to anything else, the 300PPI makes a lot of difference (coming from Boox Air 227 PPI) and the whole workflow just work, with side-loading couple of essentials apps for me, I basically don't find myself using any other device. Funny how front-light became a not super important feature with the Nomad, actually, it managed to address the bad habits I have with lights, and at bed if I want to read I use my Moleskine light that I bought 7 years ago and never used :D Again, thanks for the review.

Thanks Voja, great review, as expected. After my own first three weeks of using the device, I have decided to stick to it. The “clacketiclack” is an issue, but not as much as I originally found, and I had difficulty returning to my RM2. The writing experience is great and I found 11.8” to be so good, because it basically emulates A4, which is the size I mostly work with. So: full size pages, PowerPoints and books are now displayed in real size and the device simply feels premium. I will be selling my RM2 on eBay. Thanks again!

Regarding the first 3 backlight steps, I had the same experience. But then I remembered how you used the backlight on the Boox UltraC to compensate for the darkness of the screen. So when in twilight, I use the backlight of the Paper Pro to match the background of the screen to the 'whiteness' of the bezel (maybe you'll want to squint a bit to properly match it) It's very subtle of an effect, but well worth trying out! It will make the contrast much nicer, without giving the impression of a glowing screen you would typically get from a normal backlight usage. Then, even the first step on the backlight scale starts to make sense thx for the great review as always!

I got my RMPP about a week ago now, and it’s my first tablet of any kind: never really owned an iPad or another eink device. So from this perspective, I’m honestly very happy with it. Definitely noting some issues that I mainly attribute to the fact that it’s still just over a month that the device had been released, so I expect RM to fix a lot of this stuff with updates. And then I personally take no issue with the way display refreshes or that the device might feel slow at times: I fully knew the limitations of the display before getting it, but I absolutely love the quality and feel of the device. The writing experience is top notch, the clicking of the marker doesn’t bother me at all, and you can’t _actually_ hear the display do its work. For the context: I am a college student, math major, and basically all of my class notes are now taken on RMPP. It’s excellent for that type of work. I will be sending an email to let RM know about the issues that I’ve encountered, like slow charging and some interface glitches here and there

This just proves your very very careful and thorough reviews. That‘s why you are the most trustworthy reviewer in your scope. Thank you! I see this issue on my device and it really annoys me, because I can’t continue lines with a second stroke… the lines just don't match. Especially on vertical lines and pen tilted to the right. Don't see this with pen tilted to the left. I contacted support a few hours ago. They asked for videos which I provided. I am curious what will be the response.

@@MyDeepGuide Well, that does not change much. The lower light levels are not for full dark environment. They are to "whiten" the background under medium ambient light situations. The goal (at least for me) is to brighten the background without it looking like the light is on, meaning glowing at you. You can turn off the light with one tap by tapping the light icon at the bottom of the segmented level indicator. I don't mean the bottom segment, but below that means "off".

Worth the wait! Probably your most in depth 'In Depth' review! I think for a lot reasons you wanted and needed to give both the device's potential consummers and reMarkable a comprehensive and honest review of the Paper Pro. reMarkable took a huge leap of faith with this product which has come to life only by considerable work and investment on their part, but even more so from their belief in it. Having worked for an R&D company for nearly 30 years, I understand and appreciate the risks and pitfalls that can come with innovative products. And, I think we all, as an e-ink appreciative community, need to applaud reMarkable for having the courage and determination to pursue the Paper Pro. It is an impressive device. Will I be buying one? Not until I see how reMarkable has been able to address some of the products cons/weaknesses. I purchased a BOOX Air 3C and hated the Kaleido screen experience and as a result have determined two things: 1) that the availability/use of color on my documents is not that important and, 2) that color e-ink technology just isn't here yet.
@5idi3 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for almost 2 hours of me doing nothing and regretting none of it 😊 I admire ReMarkable's unapologetic approach and the thought and effort they put into everything, but to me it feels like they've missed one of the main points of e-ink, which is to be easy on the eyes. I'm visually impaired so maybe I'm more sensitive, but apart from the flickering, I kept reacting badly to the rendering of black and white. It's... well, blue on yellow. My mind kept asking for a grayscale filter. Other than that, I honestly don't know how peoole use a pen without a button.

I don't like using a back light in my tablets in the first place so when it was getting to dusk and there was some light but it was dim, adding a little light at setting 3 was perfect for me. It didn't feel glowy but helped me read what I needed. I still agree though, I struggle to find a use case for lower levels. In a full dark room I use level 4. I too wish the lower levels were brighter.

Great review, one minor note: The device shouldn’t charge that slowly, I can charge it fully in roughly an hour. If it’s charging slowly, restart the device and it will charge much faster. My theory here is that there’s a software bug where after some period of time it stops negotiating a fast charge and only fixes it on a restart. Hopefully a software update will fix it.

For the clicky first contact, try righting with lighter than normal pressure. I've found that you can write well with a very light touch, less than physical pencil and paper. This will reduce nib wear and less contact noise. Mind you I use the "Fineliner" for all my text writing and this does not make use of pressure. With the Pencil tool, light touch would give light color of course. While artistically, pressure pens/tools are nice, for basic writing of text, I find that ignoring pressure is best, keeping text easier to read and consistent.

My RMPP finally arrived one day before your in-depth review, so I could experience only some of the mentioned cons until now. A big con for me was the drawing experience, especially when I want a coloured background (which I miss in the templates). Big coloured areas take a lot of time to refresh and when I am turning the page to my next drawing, there is noticeable ghosting, that does not disappear automatically. Maybe this is something worth to show in an own video too.

I sadly agree...I returned mine few days ago, It does not worth it at least for now. The larger screen is a plus but the overall experience is somehow worse compared to the RM2. The flickering is really prominent, distracting, and the writing feeling is just too hard, slippery and less "paper feel", the (much) darker than the RM2 display it reduces the contrast and visibility, making it tiring on long sessions. Not to mention the yellowish tint and the fact that black is not black but blueish. I generally dont bother the premium price but this time I find it hard to justify.
@e.a.c.85842 ай бұрын
Completely agree that they should start implementing some features such as pen calibration, infinity page or not, maybe even ability to draw shapes such as circles as they right now have with straight lines. A good way they could implement this whilst keeping the minimalistic design is to use the minimalistic design as the default but have the ability to add more advanced stuff in the settings.
@torejorgensen53443 ай бұрын
Love it for pdf reading and annotation. Both the screen size and colours makes it close to perfect for that, and I don't mind the flickering when changing pages. For writing/drawing charts I mostly do that in black, but if I draw with colour the flickering is a little bit distracting. My main complaint though is that it doesn't have a fill function. I didn't miss it much in black and white, but with colours it would be useful to quickly draw a shape with a black pen and then fill it with some colour. I am lucky enough to not be distracted with the sound of the pen hitting the glass, but I don't think I would want to sit writing on it in a silent room next to somebody trying to concentrate 😂. Then again, typing on a keyboard would not be ideal in such a situation either, so maybe it is best to not sit next to somebody who tries to concentrate when you write. I still think they should have a close look at Supernote and implement something like the heading and linking functionality, and I would also love to see some kind of official support for side loading apps.

This is what I picked up from this review, in a nutshell: colour + size are good/fantastic, all the rest (software, tick-tick pen, ...) not so much. With Voya's review I have now been able to satisfy my curiosity; this is not for me. I would still be very much interested in a complete review with respect to pdf-annotation capabilities (that happens to be the one thing that I am still looking for, a device to professionally annotate pdf's).

One thing that no one ever mentions, and I wish I had known before purchasing a reMarkable, is that EPUB files cannot have active hyperlinks. This means that all the books you transfer to the reader will lose their indexes and notes. It would be appropriate for the company to take this issue seriously and for reviewers to focus more on the specific use cases of everyday people rather than discussing incomprehensible things like the sound of the screen refresh.
@MyDeepGuide3 ай бұрын
I think that it's much more the case that reviewers and people who have been following or using the Remarkable devices since the first release, back in 2017, all are completely used to the fact that Remarkable doesn't handle EPUB files properly. It basically converts an EPUB into a PDF file and then displays it. This is why none of the normal EPUB functionalities work normally on any Remarkable device. The company is the one that should disclose this piece of information in a much clearer way, so that users, like you, who rightfully assume that the device should be able to perform and handle all normal EPUB functionalities as other devices do, would know that this is not the case with this device.

reason the little ghosting is fading is that most likely the particles in the slow gel they are have some accelaration. Basically you do a quick pull and gives you the page with a slight ghosting, then the CMY particles sink down while the whites move more up and it means the opposite that most likely the blacks also gets a bit deeper after a while when the page content is static

Really Enjoyed the Video as always! 26:17-18 - The sounds of "processing" AMAZING !! It even sounded a bit different like there are multiple variations. I like it from a point of view "A smart tool comunicates back it's unique movement, so an error is immidiatly assigned to the right part that's erroring", but we can replace 'erroring' with 'having a hard time translating or performing'. of course the feedback sometimes distructs, so it must be optional. I imagine those sounds must feel like a bonding agent between the device and the person using it, imgine doing a routine activity that has a unique sound to it. And, the device also has the ability to run a learning algorithm on your handwriting (X dictionaries). It's getting closer to be recognized as a living machine :) in the good way I hope (if it can be trusted to keep a secret like an old PC, then I imagine it's a good way).

I believe some have found a way to improve the front light by tweaking through developers option. Perhaps something you can test that out
@MyDeepGuide3 ай бұрын
I don't have any intention of hacking the system and forcing the hardware and, much more importantly, the battery to do things it wasn't designed or tested to do. Just because you can apply a hack to force the intensity of a front light to a higher degree doesn't mean that this where that story ends. That's actually just the beginning, because the front light intensity has a direct effect on battery depletion rate, which has a direct effect on battery temperature, which has a direct effect on what the battery driver monitor will think is happening with the system, etc, etc. So no, I won't be doing that.

I love the look and feel of the page refresh in black/white! Feels really smooth and organic. Why do they not offer a small 7" reader? I also do not agree, that ultra sharp 300 ppi letters are necessarily better for everyone for the reading experience. This device in b/w on the video gives me that natural paper feeling I have not seen on any other device. And my Kindle PW in real also does not have that.

regarding front light on when you dont think so. even without automatic sensor. A small mini icon at the top or bottom like even 3x3 pixel dot(s) to indicate that its on would have been nice to avoid wasting battery when not need of frontlight

Dear Voya, as always I much appreciate your thoughtful and balanced review. Here is one thing that could be mentioned. You pointed out that the writing has some clickiness on RM Pro, which can be disturbing. I tried imitating writing on RM Pro with RM2 pen and with Staedtler Jumbo pen, and there was almost no clickiness (especially with jumbo), even less than on RM2. So, one can conclude that the problem is not with the device itself but with the nib of the RM Pro pen.
@MyDeepGuide3 ай бұрын
Yes, hence me mentioning a couple of times specifically that the problem would be remedied if they would release a softer version of the nibs for the new pen :)

I like the fact that they didn’t go the iPad way, like “I’m a computer, I’m not a computer”. They stick to their ball game, they didn’t even try to be an e-reader. They’re just for note taking and document annotation, Done. One of the test that I would like to see is to install the Remarkable app on another e-ink device, like the Go 10.3 and see in you can create a new note from there and write on it.
@cward29863 ай бұрын
The problem is that these are NOT good annotators by standards of most people that use a lot of PDFs. In addition to the friction getting things on and off the tablet, annotations are not handled in a standard manner - as far as I can tell annotations in a marked-up document are flattened, which means there is no way for standard PDF readers to jump from highlight to highlight, summarize, extract, or edit/delete those annotations. Even worse, the RPP does not seem to offer any way to do those things, either. This is a huge part of PDF workflow for anyone that does extensive work with PDFs. Bummer, as I was excited about the use of color and hoping this would be a killer device.

Some users have expressed dissatisfaction with the writing feel, especially when compared to the remarkable 2. Is it just the "tap" and initial contact? Is it the general hardness? Could there be manufacturing variation (in both the screen and markers)? Is it just a matter of "getting used to it" like other aspects of the reMarkable Paper Pro? As someone looking to decide on an e-paper tablet, it's confusing to me how many users describe this as "one of the best writing experiences" while others qualify it as "a clear downgrade." Thanks again for this incredible deep dive into this device!
@MyDeepGuide3 ай бұрын
I'd be willing to bet that it's the hardness + the initial clickiness of the first contact, because that is a definitive turn off. Something they can easily remedy by releasing soft nibs for the new pens.
@MC-ov8dr3 ай бұрын
@@MyDeepGuide My personal experience is that the writing feels immensely better once the nib wears down a little (a week or two of writing). Seems like the slightly wider surface area of the worn down nib gives more 'grip' or friction on the textured screen. I personally love it, but I'm a bigger fan of a pen over pencil.

Hope Remarkable goes back to basics for the reMarkable 3. High contrast black and white screen, no screen sounds or tapping noises. Implement the performance and resolution along with the folio cover into the rm3 from the pro.
@mrmosk20113 ай бұрын
I agree with this. If they add more memory and storage, move to 300 ppi screen, a BW note taker is still a very nice option. But I hope they will lower the price more, maybe create a cheaper bundle for students. Get them into the ecosystem and hopefully they will purchase better accessaries or upgrade the device later.

If I understood correctly, you said that after three weeks you then went back to the Go 10.3. Other than missing the writing feel, did you feel relieved going back to the Boox? Subjectively, does one or the other feel like a more comfortable, less frustrating device? And thank you so much for the excellent, in depth video!
@MyDeepGuide3 ай бұрын
It was combined. Mostly it was a sense of relief to have such a crisp display and correct shading displayed, to have the snappiness and responsiveness back and not to have the clickiness of the pen contact. However, there was a short period of frustration with the Boox UX which never feels comfortable, no matter how much time I spend with it. But, after a day, I got back into the Boox UX mindset, and other than missing the size, and the wake on pen lifting, and the strong magnet, I'm not really missing much else.

57:50 this is because they are basically converting the ePUB into a separate PDF with the text settings instead of “natively” writing on ePUB, which is why it takes a while to convert, especially since the book you tried was about 1000 pages 😅

It seems like there's a lot of really cool tech in there, but they tried cutting cost on CPU and RAM and I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't similar thinking in the pen choice (maybe Wacom wanted more money) If I were paying the amount they ask for this device I'm not sure I'd be happy with the compromises.

I want to share my bad experience with my RM Pro. I hope this problem only happens to me and not with more people. Seems the screen is more fragile compared to any other eink devices out there that I’ve been using includes RM2, Supernote, various Boox and even Huawei. While having the unit with the folio case, I typically just throw it with my backpack along with my iPad (which usually caseless) and macbook pro. With such a surprise, when I got home, I found that the screen of my RM Pro was broken (completely unusable, almost as if I have dropped the device). No, there is no physical damage outside and I didn’t drop the device nor my bag (both my macbook pro and ipad are perfectly fine). With any other e-ink devices, I don’t have to worry about this. Good news is RM said they are going to replace for me, the bad news is dealing with the support team is quite painful and it already 3 weeks and they haven’t resolved on getting the replacement unit sent to me (I have sent my broken unit 3 weeks ago). So cross my fingers, that this is a isolated issues. It will be painful if I have to super super extra careful on carrying something that supposed to be a daily driver for note taking.

People have gotten BT working, since the WiFi chipset also has BT with it. The drivers are slightly buggy, but there are clips of Bt keyboards just working on the tablet. There is also some findings on a gyroscope/accelerometer being present on the devices, they have a bunch of hardware sitting there, and maybe they might enable it in future software releases
@MyDeepGuide3 ай бұрын
Yes, but this means that you need to void your device's warranty in order to get a basic functionality working.
@fouzr3 ай бұрын
@@MyDeepGuide uhh, I don’t remember seeing anything about using developer mode and/or modifying the *software* affecting the Warranty As far as I understand the EULA, the warranty is only void for any hardware damage, and nothing specifically about software(except when there was an eFuse thing on the rM2 that could permanently brick it). Plus, with the option of a recovery mode that lets you start fresh, I see no reason to think this would void the warranty unless a software modification causes a hardware malfunction Either they left the hardware in for no reason, or they plan to flesh it out it a future release, which is what I would hope for
@MyDeepGuide3 ай бұрын
They have a very specific line that ANY modification of the system software basically voids warranty. And this is not possible to achieve via normal means, meaning, you need root access and you need to reprogram the system to use a non approved or verified driver and activate a piece of hardware that is not normally activated. So technically you are voiding the warranty on both the hardware and software level by doing that. Same with the hack going on to push the front light to higher intensities, this is also both a hardware and software modification that can most definitely be accounted as voiding your warranty, as you are forcing the device hardware and battery to do something that it can't do by default.
@fouzr3 ай бұрын
@@MyDeepGuide i agree that doing any of this, if it leads to any damage to the hardware, can 100% void the warranty But if it’s mostly a software tweak(say, changing pen thickness or suspended screen or templates for example), I feel like voiding the warranty for that seems too much
@fouzr3 ай бұрын
