The tragedy of what Kpop companies have been doing ever since BTS broke the mould is that instead of letting their idols do as BTS, they force them to BE like BTS. And that is the very opposite reason why BTS became this big. They were who they were and acted accordingly. You will never get "the next BTS" until one of these labels LET their artists be who they are and LET them act accordingly. That is the mould to use, not set an external songwriter and producer to create "Life is Still Going on" and all the other shenanigans.🤦♀

I have tried watching other groups and while they all have positive attractive qualities, the system keeps them sort of like robots. While BTS accepted being Idols, they never let that define or limit them. BTS has a depth of artistry on many levels and now we even see it in their individual albums that are so totally an distinctly different...because they are all high level artists.

Something that I think doesn't get talked about enough when discussing BTS's international success compared to other kpop acts is the importance BTS has put on live concerts since the beginning of their career. Sure, all kpop groups do great live performances but those are often limited to Korean music shows and year-end award shows. Concerts and especially tours are much less common within the kpop industry. Then, there's BTS who did the Red Bullet Tour in Fall 2014 and Summer 2015, travelling throughout Australia, the US, and Latin America. And a lot of those international shows sold out extremely quickly. This international tour and the other tours that BTS has done is a major part of their international success. Like it was said in the video, many kpop acts are often focused on performing for a camera rather than the audience which makes sense for televised music shows, but not for concerts. A good performance is not just stage presence, but also knowing how to connect with the audience, and that's something that BTS really excels at and has been excelling at since their debut. It's also part of the reason why their fanbase is so large and so devoted. There's a very strong connection between ARMY and the band, and that connection is really fostered through BTS's concerts.

The way i see it is that BTS started in a kpop idol group, but they outgrew that box a long time ago. And i don't think that even they themselves or their company realizes that. Each time they went on international platforms, they had to improve so that foreigners would stop looking down on them. And improving they did!!!

But they still broke the mold in many ways, even pre-debut. Releasing songs to YT written by the members and being very much themselves. I'm thinking of the song they wrote about being trainees at Christmas and even criticizing, tongue in cheek, Bang PD for making them train during the holiday. From the very beginning they've had the trappings of a kpop group, training, choreo, MV, fandom name, light stick, fan chants, etc but they were still, as individuals, very much a part of the music they released and the concepts/story they told. 💜

In honesty, I feel like that so many K-pop artists are trying to follow the same path as BTS, especially with many entertainment companies are trying way too hard to create the “next BTS”, rather than letting their own artists to be their true self. Just like yoongi has once said, “there’s no next BTS”. No idols will ever be in the same place or achieve the same goals as BTS, when they’re not being their true self. Is time for all idols to start following their own path and express more of their true identity, instead of trying to follow BTS’s path.
@RoseSkeletonКүн бұрын
Yes! I’ve noticed that too! Buts its more like they want to be ambitious, to be on top, and especially i’ve noticed that they want to be loved. And I get it, bts is so authentic and loving that its amazing to see them shine so naturally. But bts only can achieve that with their authenticity (you can only be loved for who you are) and because they were meant to be on top. Its bts’ destiny to be on top. And thats a hard thing to be honest about, that maybe some idols or most idols were never meant to be popular if they truly were authentic.

Same here, listen to them during commute time, I have the in the background during work and actively searching for live performance contents of BTS on youtube. I also noticed that songs or artists I used to like loose their appeal, because it lacks the depth, the lyrical message, the visual candy and the backstory - what I do get by BTS. Get to know BTS discography is an incomparable experience, where apart from the song you get like 1000 layers to it, it is as mind-blowing as it is remarkable.
@Illi_AmperdКүн бұрын
I discovered BTS as a music lover, someone who heard one of their songs and wanted to explore their entire discography (I usually do this when I like a song by an artist). However, I ended up connecting on a deeper level due to their message and innovative aspects I'd never seen before. I vividly remember exploring their content and being impressed by each video, performance, and lyrics. It was like opening the door to a new world. It was like having good music with an extra layer. I've grown up consuming music from various artists; I don't limit myself to one artist or genre. I simply need to enjoy the music and message (I always read song lyrics; I feel good lyrics make a song more enjoyable). So, I agree with this video's points: K-pop is meticulously crafted, but as someone interested mainly in music, not the K-pop industry, I struggled to connect with other K-pop groups. Although they're captivating and some have catchy songs, I feel they lack soul and musical personality. I don't mean uniqueness, but rather the division between the Idol and their interpretation. I'm not saying they're bad; they just don't spark my interest in their music or urge me to support them actively. What struck me about knowing BTS and deciding to support them was inevitably becoming immersed in the K-pop world. It was surprising to see debates in the K-pop community about superficial aspects. Conversations about lyrics or songs are rare among fans; visuals, fashion, hair colors, gestures, trends, and dances dominate. Some performances can feel robotic. It's not inherently bad; it just doesn't captivate me. I'm not interested in discussing hair colors or fashion (although BTS drew me into the fashion world). I feel BTS leveraged K-pop characteristics and incorporated them into their art. They're not a K-pop stepping stone; they utilized K-pop as a tool. With their musical talent and K-pop's rigor, they captured the attention of people outside the K-pop niche. They attracted fans who don't necessarily enjoy the K-pop industry. We shouldn't be judged for that. We simply don't enjoy everything surrounding that industry or find the typical K-pop sounds appealing. Liking only one group isn't problematic, especially since BTS doesn't sound like typical K-pop. They're musicians who created music based on their vision, not fitting into K-pop standards. Yes, they're presented as a K-pop act, but they've explored various genres and sounds. That's why K-pop fans might clash with BTS; although labeled K-pop, they don't follow the industry's standards and rules. They're artistically free and make genuine music.

an important part of Art, that's sometimes forgotten is the message it conveys. And as it was said, ‘composer doesn't only compose’, ‘dancer doesn't only dance’, That's so raw an unique to BTS. You see all of the members doing everything, You see all of them trying it and not forgetting to know and learn about it and then pull out the art, experimenting is amazing especially for artists, ans I love it. I love how they put out different things. Especially this solo era of BTS ans their own perspective, genres, messages and ART, everything was such a big rollercoaster ride that I enjoyed with happy screams will forever be memorable. Just imagine a world where every artist produced their own stuff, on the one hand rly good because then you can fully see what they are representing. On the other hand you wouldn't need producers, dance choreographers etc. anymore. This was such an interesting thing you pointed out like ballet dancers or orchestral musicians etc. don't choreograph or write their songs but are extremely talented individuals that mostly trained rly hard for it. Also taking for example JK's album, it wasn't self-produced but he had his plan and he decided which songs would go into the album and in which order so that there's a story that listeners follow while listening. What I want to say is that people have talents in different fields, producers are good in producing and are often not artists, but does that mean they shouldn't use their potential for people who can perform amazingly on stage? In the end BTS is one of the few exceptions who have everything on their team and using all of these individual talents made them create a whole universe of amazing content that people can connect with and that's one of the reasons why people love them so much and why they are where they are today.

I want to add some extra thoughts to this video. Overall I agree with the factors you outlined about the kpop formula and how BTS differs from that formula, but I think it was a bit over-generalised. Although you acknowledged there are some exceptions, that was glossed over a bit too much, and because of that we missed part of the explanation for "why BTS?" The point I want to emphasise (and stay with me here) is that there are other artists from the kpop system who also write and produce music, and some of them do write songs that represent their own experiences and come from the heart, it's just very rare. I think the difference with BTS is: Quantity, Quality, Freedom. To explain what I mean in more detail - Quantity. There are other kpop artists who write some of their own songs, but often their production credits will be limited to just a few songs, so self-written music doesn't become a major part of their career identity. There are also a few artists (e.g. Big Bang, Seventeen, Stray Kids, (G)i-dle) who write a lot of music, but that's rare enough to make these artists very much an exception to the rule. However quantity is also about the number of members contributing. In some of the groups I listed before, it's only one member who does the vast majority of creative work, so the group as a whole feel more like performers. BTS are very unusual in that their concept from the beginning was for all members to contribute creatively. At first the rap line were the central trio who wrote and produced, but over time the other members took the initiative to learn, and began contributing as well. Even the members who didn't start out writing lyrics were always creatively involved - for example some of their solo songs on Wings were written by RM, but he explained that he based the lyrics on long conversations with each member, so he could write something based on their own thoughts and experiences. Also they've always decided on album concepts as a group, and always had the final say on what to release. Another example would be the album BE, where each member took on a different role, and they managed the entire creative direction from start to finish. Quality. This is obviously entirely subjective, and I'm not saying other artists don't have good songs or quality lyrics. There are other songs written by kpop artists which I think are genuinely really good. However for me BTS have a discography that massively stands out from the crowd. The level of depth to their lyrics, the subject matter, the poetry, the way language is used... of course it's all subjective, but their music reached me on a level I've very rarely found elsewhere in kpop. With other artists there may be one or two or four or five songs that really reach me at that level, but with BTS there are hundreds. Even their fun songs have so many levels to them. Then when you get into their concept albums, the way they develop themes over the course of years, layered metaphors that link between multiple songs... I'm just obsessed with their lyrics. They massively stand out from the crowd to me. It was their lyrics (and the way they deliver those lyrics) that motivated me to fight as hard as I have for them as a fan. And it's that inspired, passionate support from fans which brought them to where they are. Without that none of this would have happened. Freedom. I'm not saying BTS have complete freedom in every aspect, they obviously work within a company structure, and discuss as a group how to make their musical output cohesive and marketable, so they will make compromises at times. But there doesn't seem to be an overall limiter on their artistic freedom. If a particular song doesn't fit on a BTS album, they can rework it for a solo album or release it on soundcloud. And when it comes to solo work they can really do what they like. They swear frequently, have highly explicit lyrics, political lyrics, address mental health in an uncensored way and so on. Not to mention freedom to experiment musically according to their individual tastes (e.g. RM's latest album being highly alternative). Again, they're not the only kpop artists to ever do this, but it's very very rare, and the only examples I can think of where kpop artists reached a similar level of freedom happened when a former idol was working outside the 'idol' system (e.g. G-Dragon or Bang Yongguk or HA:TFELT). So to sum up... I think it's important to acknowledge that there are a few other artists in the kpop sphere who make their own music and express themselves, they deserve praise and recognition for that. Of course in the eyes of their fans they will also be 'the best', and I wish them well for the future. But BTS are the only artists I can think of who (in my opinion) hit all three categories above at a very high level. A very high quantity of original output, at a very high level of quality, all highly authentic and with artistic freedom. This is their 'unique selling point'. And then, of course, they combine that 'unique selling point' with all the other elements a good kpop group has - dance, vocals, rap, stage presence, music videos, style, charisma, humour, teamwork - all at the very highest levels. They tick every box. For me that explains why they are 'The Ones' who made it to worldwide fame.

The comparison to a musical was pretty apt to me. Bangtan put their heart and soul into their music it's something extra special they took parts of kpop and made it more real rather than acting a part it's just more alive and that's partly because of their heart and souls are expressed in their lyric's, composing, producing, singing, rapping story telling, dancing and interactions on stage which are ain't always choreographed. It's less well 'Plastic Barbie doll'. Plastic Barbie Doll' is fine if that's what you enjoy. Yes I can appriecate what other's do but it's not as alive to me if one can understand what I mean. Ive been saying this sense i got into kpop, i was interested by the newness of the formula of kpop but after a couple months it got old, BTS was able to grow in ways that majority of kpop groups just don't even get too. As someone whose been a fan from their beginning and around the same age as JK when he debuted, meaning i was growing up with them, ive been able to witness them going from regular koop perfomers to artists and heck two of them started as artists right out the gate which probably made the path so much easier for the rest of the members. We all know how JK is inspired by RM. Many groups dont even get the chance to survive long enough to experience that kind of freedom and the other ones grow complicit in their popularity and don't grow beyond that. I also feel its clear to see which idols actually love music and performing and which ones are there for a job. Not everyone is gonna be an amazing singer or rapper, or dancer but they love being on stage and peforming and thats fine for me too, not everyone is meant to be an artist but im glad we are getting past the phase in kpop where everyone was being called an artist, it undermines the work that idols like BTS put into their artistry.

Not the kpop formula but the fact that (and this might have been bighits doing) bts at some point felt so focused on making it in the american music spaces that they kind of lost their original charm to me. When they released songs fully in english (dynamite, etc.) that didn't feel genuine to them as artists, that's when they kind of lost me. They didn't feel like the bts I initially started liking and their solo work has since felt way more like them then what the group put out. I don't know what it will be like when they all return from the military but I hope they don't fully convert to only doing what brings in the most money. Because at certain points, it just felt too much like they were only selling a product rather than making art and I don't know how long that will work for them before they inevitably burn out. Of course we live in a late-capitalist society but that doesn't mean they need to only make stuff that makes the big bucks, it felt like bighit/hybe were pushing that too much. And I know for a fact in the long run neither them nor us would be happy with that.

Again you have done another great video. BTS has taken being musical performers and artists to another level and we as their fans are here for it. We continue to be fed by BTS and their music to not only shape our playlists but to continue to color our lives and our growth with their lyrics. Their music taught us how to learn to love ourselves and then love others. To build each other up and in doing so build ourselves into stronger more self aware humans. They helped us cope with the pandemic and the loneliness that set in and then encouraged us to find our Muse, ask for More after and find the Right place to be even at the Wrong time. It helped soothe our Layovers with some easy listening and that was Golden. We also are constantly reminded they Will always Be There for us. It is the story of our lives and that is what makes a great Artist like Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Queen.

I remember liking a kpop group's compilation videos because they reminded me so much of BTS, my ultimate favs. I tried listening to their songs and tried so hard just to like them, but I couldn't do it at all. Now I fully realise why I couldn't. There was nothing for me to relate with in their artistic factors. When it comes to BTS, every new release I have so many things to relate to myself because BTS themselves are releasing songs based on their life. Thank you for defining K-Pop Idol genre in such a wide scope. BTS, 7 young boys from the country with big dreams with a will and ambition to make it in the big city. "We will show them", said RM. Their proof is in PROOF the album. What I'm impressed the most is the amount of trust and faith Bang S has had in these 7 young boys the beginning. With their own sacrifices and hard work, it was their talent that speaks the loudest, the hard and the soft, the anger and the love in their songs.

I do understand that there may be an aspect of the idol performance that is similar on the surface to a musical or a ballet performance or even opera. However majority of these idol songs or performances do not have the gravitas of musicals that have stood the test of time especially those that continue to run since their original productions in the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s. Even the impact of the great centuries- old ballet like Swan Lake or the Nutcracker or Turandot or even the classic Nessun Dorma. These productions move people to their core. You'll see audience weeping and giving standing ovations to incredible musical / performing legendary artists like Gene Kelly, Judy Garland, Lin Manuel- Miranda, Patty Lupone, Colm Wilkinson, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Roberto Bolle, Luciano Pavarotti, Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo and many more. These are world renowned and respected artists of these performing arts /genres. Idol music does not even come close to a Gershwin, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Sondheim, Tchaikovsky, Bizet or any of the classical music that have lasted for decades even centuries.

Yet another winning vid, where you explain the context and provide interesting analysis. It has raised a thought for me though; maybe BSH's intention was to bend, not break fully, the parameters of the k-pop industry, thus enabling it to make the leap to mainstream, global music 'genre'? I think in Bangtan he found willing partners who, though young, showed a maturity, and had the talent and discipline to help him implement that vision (tbh, maybe even become co-architects of that vision)? In summary, your vids make me wonder 😉💜😏

The difference between mastery of CRAFT and ARTISTRY ... The level of hard work and talent that goes into any KPOP group is astounding and laudable, no question at all. But, in order to reach the level of a true artist, the group must put a great deal of themselves into their music, as well as present music that their audience can CONNECT to on a deep level.

ARTISTS are people who have something to say whatever their medium. When they clearly convey their ideas to us, we are moved even if they are not the best singers, dancers or painters etc. Some sing, dance, act extremely well and move us and they are the great PERFORMERS. They might not have a lot to say but they excel at their art. In my opinion, one is not better or worse than the other. BTS are both Artists and phenomenal Performers and this is still a rarity in KPop.

Amazing as always 💜 I really love how you organize your ideas so well that I understand every single concept. I think you explained the terms very clearly. The examples you gave for the performers (musicals, ballet dancers, etc.), I never thought of seeing Kpop groups in that light. With the amount of discourse on the Kpop internet sphere, where we often see people debate whether an idol is an artist or a performer, I almost started to see it as a bad thing (at least in the K-pop industry). But the way you compared the idols' style of performing with other western performers reminded how much hard work it actually is. Being in the web for so long really causes me to lose touch with reality a little bit 😅
@JjanMaria7 сағат бұрын
Respecting what Namjoon said on "K" being a premium label, while also acknowledging that BTS is frm a kpop industry, then I think we should start making it a distinction of K-pop idols vs K-pop artists. As you put it, the mainstream gp expect an artist's music to be the artists's own self-expression (singing/performing their own artistic work) or self-intepretation (singing/performing other people's work w the artist own unique take). Kpop grps could be said to fulfill the category of self-interpretation performers. But, as you said, individual voices is hidden in a kpop grp n even more hidden in the kpop industry. So, to me, when they're performing, they're not performing a self-interpretation, but a general standardised performance per the kpop framework. For me then, kpop grps that don't do self-expression or self-interpretation are KPOP IDOL , while kpop grps that actually do self-expression n self-interpretation should be distinctly identified as KPOP ARTIST.

I have come to the conclusion that the iron control that companies put on the lives and careers of idols prevents them from being artists, the level of sadism and need for possession that they have over them Young people are there to study, I suppose that BTS had, has and will have pressures of all kinds, but even in the corset of the K-POP industry, they had people with an artistic vision that shaped them in another way shape is that its producers, arrangers and music video directors are still mostly the same...

I just found myself clapping at mutliple instances of this video. STELLAR storytelling. I wish more K-pop groups were able present their personable experiences through their music, which is exactly what you stated, they're already set up for failure with the system they have in place. Not BTS though, BTS learnt how to connect, resonate and express themselves. The good 'ol advice of "Just be yourself!" applies so much.

It is the truth. This is the main reason why I don't like to search or listen for new kpop groups. It is all mechanical, too much emphasis on trends and hence too much emphasis on repetitive 'concepts', this disconnection between idol group and the music they are performing. It isn't about expressions or ability to sing or fashion. They can be great at all of the above and still be boring.

I am going to quote Big Hit Music's original logo - "Music and Artists for Healing". That sums it up nicely, doesn't it? Until Kpop idols are not allowed to express their definitions of music, art and healing, they will never break out of the mold that has been forced on them. I listened to a lyrics video of "Fake Love" (where all BTS members aren't even present, where no fashion or dancing or choreography can be seen) and it was enough for me. I could feel the souls of the people singing. I could connect to them because they connected to their music, their art, and to themselves (I didn't have an idea at the time that they also write, compose and produce their music, and come up with their own concepts too).

My dear Boracity, I just love everything about the content you publish each and every time! You're sooooo good! You have this God-given ability to summarize and explain our thoughts the way we wouldn't be able to express, and it always make me so happy to have found you. As for this video's subject, you make some very good points here and make me think a lot about how I perceive music and artists. I come from a Central European country and in my culture we don't idolize performers, they can stay on a very human level so when I first encountered K-Pop (BTS was and is my first choice, but it got me interested in the Korean music scene), so at first I was very confused by these groups, as they differ so much from BTS. To be honest I found less than a handful soloist and group I follow, but strangely I also noticed that (non-Korean) songs or artists I used to like all my life loose their appeal, because it lacks the depth, the lyrical message, the connection, the visual appeal and the backstory - what I do get from/by BTS. Get to know BTS' discography is an incomparable experience, where apart from the song you get like 1000 layers to it, it is as mind-blowing as it is remarkable. It changed my 2-dimensional approach to a holistic approach. And I am well aware that all this was possible thanks to the creativity and talent of the 7 members and all their supporting departments, like creatives, musicians, choreographers, designers, stylist, videographers etc. How lucky we are to live in the same era.

You are truly right in your assessment. I have noticed that more and more K-pop “idols” are starting to write their own music. The truly popular groups, and I mean the ones who have international followings are the ones that are self produced, and they come from different labels. BTS, Seventeen, Stray Kids, are mainly the groups I listen to. They all have songs written by individual members. There are several girl groups that are starting to break the mold also.
@boredkueen8784Күн бұрын
The kpop industry learned nothing from bts and instead blindly tried to copy their "aesthetic". Pushing the "i love myself concept" instead of their acts actually learning and practicing self love. Having their acts write two words on a song to boast "self written" instead of actually teaching them and encouraging to pursue song writing. There will never be a next bts specifically because the industry wont stop trying to force the next bts, when actual bts came to be because of true sincerity and authenticity and especially because of passion for music

I’ve been regularly checking out a very popular K-pop group outside of BTS and they have such fun and energetic songs and beautiful vocalists and have a tooooon of international hype around them lately (deservedly so). However, even after listening to their albums, I have no idea what they really want to say, or who they are as people. Conceptually, a theme is told to you, sure. Vlogs and funny compilations are fine, yes, but those are still separate because I can’t connect it to their lyrics/lines; or I can’t connect their lyrics to them as individuals in a way that’s believable or feels genuine. While they have hits, the music doesn’t have something I truly relate to or personally care about on a daily basis, so I’m typically being sung/rapped to about very vague concepts or surface level feelings. For music that sounds so powerful sometimes, it still feels empty or void of...self? I’m not sure if I’m explaining this well enough. Anyway, it proved to me again why I always prioritize/come back to BTS. And will continue to do so.

The downside is that BTS are now held to both standards - kpop and Western - and if they let down either end they are endlessly mocked and criticised. So many idols can't even get the experience to truly be GREAT performers because they don't get to do concerts, how can they? It takes them YEARS to build up a large enough discography for concerts because companies don't see the value in making b-sides. They have singles or EP releases, rarely push out a mini-album and if they do release a full album, it's often a compilation album because they aren't going to make that many new songs. They perform at idol shows- which are getting more and more heavily curated and mostly end up pre-recorded or have multiple takes done for the artificial fan cams and even if they don't lip-synch, the track is LOUD because anything less than perfection will get them mercilessly harassed- and award shows IF they're popular enough and that's only a lucky few groups. Outside of that, the only place for them to get experience for MULTIPLE YEARS would be at festivals, and that's only if they can get invited. It's always a little sad to me when a group DOES hold a concert earlier in their career ends up doing a bunch of covers, not because it's something they are passionate about or really fits them as a group or they're bringing their own style to- but because they need to fill out the run time.
