If you are willing to work hard, you stand a good chance of making it in the US. If you are unable to read and write properly, the few jobs available involve sanitation work, which doesnt pay as much, considering that it's quite expensive to live in the U.S. I noticed that employers prefer to hire Latinos for these positions, since they believe that they have better work ethics and attitude.

True, credit to the point that Jamaicans LOVE to put on a show for those they know. Even those they DON'T know and it sends a message of "it's smooth sailing". However, with that being said, for those with the willingness to work, the willingness to not be stagnant, the willingness to do tasks you wouldn't even do in Jamaica, the reward CAN be greater. Many have gone illegally and made something of themselves, helped family and friends, get legal and doing good. And you have those who have gone there legally or illegally and tun big dutty cruff inna di place and cause all kinda problems. It may not be easy, but from a financial standpoint, it sure is a whole lot better. And that is something that CANNOT be denied. Ask western union and money gram dem how tings look.

@@tresvorhenry3760 Jamaica is not so much lacking opportunities, and skilled laborers, but lacks participation of the total workforce in the varying industries. The decades of low wages and years of viewing everyone around leaving for the so called better opportunities outside has created a culture of everyone thinking that the only way that they can make it is if they migrate often not knowing what's waiting on them in these foreign lands. Many Jamaicans are skilled in multiple trades and will look down on the same work that they'll end up doing in foreign countries often in worst condition for the same likkle and nothing and do the same things they say they won't do in their homeland "make rich richer"

This comment section is so depressing. I love Jamaica and I never want to leave but to see 90% of the comments are people stating they are hell bent on leaving is a really sad case I wonder if the government take notes of this. It is like hell in this country for real you live in constant fear of going broke or losing your life whether due to a person just being plain Evil or because of their carelessness and disregard for the safety of others. The country is lawless and Poor I wish I had all the answers. I am studying political science rn at the UWI and I pray that I can make it to a level where I can help to start make real changes in Jamaica. I want to see Jamaica become a better place and it will be 🙏🏾

Revisit this comment section AFTER you've done your studies and have entered the work force. There are so many factors as to why this is your current thought process. A discussion where things are likely to get lost in translation and not conveyed as it should. But believe us when we say (and as you've also pointed out) it nuh easy out deh and it's not getting any easier. All the fears you have now, the anxiety, magnifies when you you hit the work force, unless you come from a family that is AT LEAST doing "ok" in life.

Build Jamaica when the government keeps robbing and enslaving our citizens. I am a hardworking Jamaican and I encourage young people if they see better elsewhere please going. Hardworking Jamaicans are underpaid and we work very hard. If we go elsewhere with the same work attitude and better pay, then they can send back and build Jamaica. As a civil servant you can hardly afford proper housing plus send your children to school. Everyone knows America is not a pot of gold but at least you get a better pay for your labour. I don't know where she get story that people come to America and start sending down 💰. Maybe that's true but that person maybe staying with a friend or relatives who will get tired of them and kick them out. Then, they'll have to find a place of their own. Let's see how far that money will stretch after that. When you come to America it takes years to establish yourself. By that I mean having a place of your own and be able to send remittance, it's not as easy as Jamaicans think. It's even worse when you don't have work permit.

While I don't think life is easy in the US I know it's far better than here in Jamaica and I use the teachers and nurse for example, they're migrating in large numbers as well with the legal route because here in Jamaica you're not been paid for what you worth. 'Pam' might want to live lavish but 99% of those who migrate or want to migrate just want better opportunities so they can make use of them and have a better life for them and their families. This mass migration issue is very very deep in the case that many aren't given the opportunity here in Jamaica and they're not been protected either. People feel far safer in first world countries than in Jamaica even though crime is everywhere. In first world countries though they're many deterrence to prevent a lot of crime like cameras and other measures of security everywhere so even though crime is committed they're sure it will be solved. That's NOT the case in Jamaica, people here are even afraid to start a business because they'll be targeted by criminals and corrupt people in society

Teachers are walking off the job here in the US because they’re not getting paid properly and other reasons. Over here is not first world like you think. The problem is people who do not even have a primary school education, made the wrong decisions in life want a lavish lifestyle. The fear of not being able to maintain or even acquire our increasing wealth and material goods often leads to increased unhappiness, misery, anxiety, and depression. Let me also say that not having any wealth can also lead to unhappiness, misery, anxiety, and depression. As a society we worship money, and we worship material goods. We have been conditioned to think we are nothing without it and everything with it. We are who we are simply because somehow, we have developed this sense of entitlement, greed, selfishness, nastiness, self-importance and a callous disregard for morals and values. Stop using poverty as an excuse for not having any morality, self-respect, personal responsibility and basic human decency...

It's not worth it. As for the notion that they're seeking a better life there; sadly that prospect is reserved for legal immigrants and citizens. I mean, you have to view this thing realistically. It's better to use the money you've saved to fly to Central America to invest in yourself in an effort to enhance your eligibility for a US VISA and utilize the legal process, otherwise, you're in for a rude awakening.

Didn't know Jamaicans we're in such horrible conditions in Jamaica that forces them to risk their lives like venezuelans , Cubans , Haitians, Dominicans and Mexicans trying to enter the united states didn't know Jamaicans were in the refuge list too . After I read this article a Jamaican told me it isn't the lack of opportunities that causing some Jamaicans to risk their lives to leave Jamaica it's the senseless violence that many Jamaicans grew tired of they aren't feeling safe in Jamaica they can't deal with the extreme violence any longer.

I have a degree and it sucks working in JA with Student Loans plus starting your life worse majority of the so called "high paying jobs" in Ja are in Kingston and living in Kingston isn't cheap especially rent. Majority of my friends who I went to college with are overseas, either legitimately or illegally and them no stop tell me to try and forward, who no done pay off their Student Loans, start business, building house and start family, kmt, Ja a crap, and its not like you dont have persons who rather stay but stay for what? These Ja businesses want persons with qualification and not even paying them good, some persons not even making over 100k, if I wasnt working for a USA based company here in Ja I wouldnt be making over 100k and its still not enough with this economy. I will tell anyone to leave if you can and try not to get hurt, take chances in life yah else you stuck a JA in poverty.

Risky chance. It’s a risky route travelling through terrain in Mexico & many don’t reach the US border including Mexicans. Many died. It’s a very long journey. I can’t see how ppl travel with children through this. A family of 4 die recently trying to cross the river from Canada to the USA. Try alone & leave the innocent children. If you love your children that much you wouldn’t put them through that. A family can take care of your children while you hunt (in case u make it alive across the Mexico terrain). If successful & you find a better life return for children later.

Jamaica's government, over the past sixty-odd years, has been unwilling to engage in creating opportunity for the people. Why?. As a result - this. It could all be avoided, but people like this Minister Johnson, who lives as smug as a bug, all her life, in Jamaica, talks rich, speaking about how much the value of the passport is devalued by the actions of people seeking a better life; a way out of persistent poverty - something Kamina Johnson can't relate to.

But as a Jamaican born American citizen, America is not a easy place to be broke, hungry or homeless and that's on God and the truth. For many people who are desperately taking those dangerous routes to get to the promise land, I wish them all the best and truly hope they get there and do all that they needs to become a better person and have a better life. But they all don't know what they all truly have in front awaiting them, many legitimate travelers with a valid US Visa doesn't want to stay in America as most hasn't really travel for many years now due to the fact they know the real deal about Merrimacka. America is not they Sunset Blvd or Hollywood Blvd America you see on TV at all. Jamaica just need better government strategy, more workforce/preparation for work agencies and a committed and understanding leadership and loyalty to the people the citizens that's all so crime can reduce. the grass is greener on the other side yes, but it a go run yuh belly! rather than move to a next country, move to a next parish! you feel seh if hungry a lick you inna the US you can go truss things a shop? or pick breadfruit offa tree? or ask you neighbor for food? lmao i know so many “bruk foreigners” who “send money” back home and who live “big life” when them deh a yaad, but in the US them no have a place to rest their head with that said, going the legal route is the best way! more opportunities that way! if you’re illegal, more problems

Why can't the Jamaican Government let the countries that blocked Jamaican ppl free up the visa system and give its ppl a better way forward. Because Jamaican will be trying to leave Jamaica due to the hardship of life here.

Not everyone gets blocked. Only a certain category of people gets blocked, and therein lies the reason for the restriction. You're asking America to take on Jamaica's burden, which is a bold suggestion.
