BBQ is an ex-police officer, who has taken arms to address the intentional oversight by those in power, who now call him a gang leader. When I listen with out judgment, I hear a man who is looking for peace, who will use the gun if it comes down to it. I don't know this man or his history, but based on this interview, he comes off as a rational man who wants better for his people and community. He also spoke how he and others for the last 2-3 yrs. have tried to get there needs and situation addressed, only to get the run around. This method may seem crude to many, however respect is earned, not always given. I pray that Hati comes to an amicable solution, and that the rebuilding of the entire community can take place.

Honestly everything he is saying is true... Haiti has to decide it's future and that can't happen if only the same people make the same decisions, or if the US or UN come in and select and place people into power. This is really more of a pivotal, possibly revolutionary moment then most people are viewing it. And I think he is one of the few that get it. Like we have a chance to become Communist, or Socialist, or a Kingdom! There should be no government except the one they make. Now maybe he just wants to rule Haiti as a dictator but, IF THE PEOPLE WANT THAT, maybe that's what they need right now. It should be up to the people, not the same corrupt government. This is a big moment. Someone just needs to organize further and make big bold steps, and that sadly may involve more fighting tbh

They didn't. They paid to not be reconquered by France. The French were having problems there (mixed race wanted inheritance rights) and the British and Spanish sensed this weakness and tried to take it over. The French freed all slaves, gave them thousands of weapons, and repelled the invasion. The French then tried to reinstate their control, the former slaves fought them back and won. Then Haiti declared themselves an empire, barred white people from owning anything, and conquered the Spanish part of the island (Dominican Republic). They slaughtered 10% of the Dominican population and then instituted unpaid forced labor at gunpoint... slavery. What Haiti paid for was France to forever leave them alone, for the infrastructure built, and to get a major country to acknowledge their independence and nationhood -- allowing them to be seen as a legitimate government that could borrow money from other places for development. The 1st offer France gave them was pretty low -- the equivalent of 1 year's revenue from the island. This was because the initial king didn't care much about this repayment, but was forced by lords who lost a lot of land to get some compensation back. Then the new monarch came in and was the complete opposite. He blockaded Haiti and demanded a massive payment, otherwise be reconquered. The debt was fully paid off by 1947. While that's terrible, plenty of places in the world were dirt poor at the same time and have since built up.
