My blessed boy stix, made it all the way to 15. He was a terrier mix but for sure mostly border. He made my life complete and living with a chronic condition he made it bareable with his soppy and affectionate nature. I'll never forget him and I miss him every day, I have an extremely empty space in my spirit without him. In time I hope to get another companion, but not before I have healed and am in the right home for a dog. He was the smartest little dog. Took to target training like a champion and was undefeated in his racing years...would never have to load him in the starting box as he would take himself in completely unprompted! My beautiful boy. Xxx

I lost my little baby in November 2022, she was 13 1/2. Her name was Nora and she was just the most loveable little girl you could ever wish to have. I'm 43 and my main breed has always been the Border Collie but assuming I live to retirement age the Border Terrier is the dog I'll grow old with.
@coolperson9470 Жыл бұрын
my little girl is 13, and has been in my family since she was 3 (i was 4 so she is basically my age). we got her because all she wanted to do was sleep. she is so layed back and the family she was with got another boarder terrier puppy which she mothered but got fed up and depressed of this other dog so we adoped her and she is amazing. because of her past she isnt the best with other dogs but my friend used to have a boarder terrier girl (she died a few years ago age 12) but before she passed my dog and her dog were so close (actually the first time they met my dog refused to walk by her side and had to be carried lol). she is great with people (she tolerates strangers) and is protective whe sensing danger and can also sense emotions and react accordingly. eg: if your sad she will sit with you, if she hears shouting she will get nervous. she has a giant lump on her neck now and moles everywhere, loosing her hearing and sign and has some doggy dementia but has 3 walks a day and eats (most days) so i would say she is thriving!

We just lost our Border Terrier Alfie today, we had him put to sleep after being advised to do so by the vet. He had a scan and it revealed a large mass on his liver which had gone entirely unnoticed until he stopped eating a few days ago and he began to vomit profusely every time he had a drink of water. The rate at which he went down hill was saddening and it broke my heart if I’m honest, he was my best mate and I’m still absolutely gutted. If any of you reading this comment own a Border Terrier please arrange to have him or her checked out by a vet if for nothing else but piece of mind, they are a hardy breed and won’t usually display any symptoms of an underlying condition until it’s too late. I know vets fees can be expensive but the cost of a check up or even a blood screen once every year or two is nothing if you look at the bigger picture. On a lighter note, once we get this nightmare of a year that is 2020 out of the way, we’re looking to do it all over again with another Border Terrier pup, the joy and happiness they bring to your life far outweighs the hard times they bring when they have to go. Stay safe ladies and gents, all the best 👍

Slight correction - the hereditary condition Borders can suffer from is Canine Epileptoid Cramping Syndrome, or Spike's Disease. It's manifestation is similar to epilepsy, though the poor puppy is fully conscious throughout the seizure, they simply lose most motor control during the seizure. I grew up with a Border that had this condition just as it was being discovered and researched in the 1990's - it's very manageable with diet control and some medication (enjoy getting a border to take pills though!), but the seizures will never completely go away. Gluten seems to be a major trigger. Polly lived until about 16 years of age, though, and her condition didn't impact her enjoyment of life EXCEPT when the seizures occurred, which required much soothing and a gluten free treat or two afterwards to settle her.

While they do need to be socialized to anything that's small furry and/or squeaks (including cats) they are generally great with all dogs, which is highly atypical of terriers, and a great advantage of the breed.

Health Checks when looking at taking on a BT, Spongiform LeucoEncephaloMyelopathy (SLEM), sometimes referred to as Shaking puppy syndrom, make sure sire and dame have been tested, Canine epileptoid cramping syndrome or CECS recently recognised condition of Border terriers. Currently the cause is unclear, although it is thought to be hereditary. Gallbladder mucocele is increasingly being diagnosed in border Terriers. Great dogs that need a firm hand and structure in their life lots of engagement with mental activity , they have high prey drive be aware around small animals and birds wild or domestic.
@kepnjem4 жыл бұрын
One of my Borders, 10 years old, was diagnosed last year as having gall bladder mucocele. He was scanned by a vet who was also scanning two other Borders that day for the same problem, albeit different areas of Yorkshire! Coincidence? I hasten to add that my dog did have his gall bladder removed and has made a complete recovery although it was touch and go at the time and is now on a very low fat diet and well as ever.

Many years ago we had a dog that was my best friend. She lived to be sixteen years old. We got her as a puppy and she looked nothing like her siblings. The mom was a beagle. Looking at images of dogs I decided that her dad must have been a border terrier because she looked just like one. So if anyone ever asked what she was I told them that she was part beagle part border terrier.

What about goving them a shower or bath i heard you only give them one if there dirty is that true if not how often do u give them a shower? Also can i just use a furminator on my border terrier instead of the hair stripping?
@gkstrengthandhonorAQHA2 жыл бұрын
Please don’t use the FURminator, as that will be cutting the hair instead of stripping it. The FURminator works by use of a razor inside of the comb which cuts the hairs in order to be able to unmatt. It would have the same effect on your dog‘s coat is if you just took a set of shears and shaved your dog.

Well our Marshall was born @ Mar 1991 of @ 9 and they had sadly inherited a brain aeizure defect that has by now has become well known, He was in distress from 94 till 2003 with the seizures that no one researched for some times and all the breeding showed where he got ir. My genetics are from the border of scottland and england too, I look exactly like this dog, bearded, peppery hair, and have skin issues as well. My skin issues diminish when i eat a purely animal protein based diet with vegetables of course, I'm sure what this breed has issue with is all the wheat that is in dog food, as well as the soy. These two ingredients trigger skin conditions on me as my ancestors were not farmers, I have all of my wisdom teeth (a sign that my genetics were not from farmers). I've known about this breed since I almost got one, now they are $3000 per puppy where I live. geeze

I dont know why but my border is always trembling in the morning. Hes a very happy dog most of the time and only gets like this for an hour or so in the mornings. He even does it when hes sleeping or snuggling on the couch. Anyone else have this? Is is excitment or anxiety. He only does it first thing its a bit odd
@arrenk33014 жыл бұрын
How bad does it get? Can the pup move normally otherwise, or while she's trembling is she unable to walk or stumbles drunkenly? Does she seem distressed when it happens, or confused (the kind of 'hang on, why the hell aren't my legs working? kind of confused) Re my post above, Borders can suffer from an epileptic-like condition that causes muscle cramps and loss of motor control. It's called Canine Epileptoid Cramping Syndrome (spike's Disease), and is linked to a gluten intolerance (so maybe swap out dry food for something else - perhaps more of a meat/veggie diet. Polly loved Kangaroo and raw chicken necks) and talk to your vet about chasing a proper diagnosis? There's also medication available, can't remember what our dog was on though, but combined dietry and medication changes lowered her fit frequency to about monthly.

Mine never barked at strangers or other dogs. He was very grood with children, kids are kids and it happened that they lifted him wrong in the air so he cried but he was never agressive. They could easily take food or toys from his mouth. He got alot of excercise though, and always atleast 15 min of search and 15 min of go fetch outside every day. A neglected BT will probably like most dogs behave badly.
