You may know beagles by their long, droopy ears, soul-melting eyes, and cute little face. But there is so much more than that. Owning a beagle is no joke. Let me share 11 things nobody tells you about beagles' temperament, their nature, their personality, their behavior, and much more.

So I took it on me and decided to share all the knowledge that I learned the hard way. In my videos, I cover all kinds of topics related specifically to beagles. So make sure to subscribe to our channel as I upload 2 videos every week.

20 years ago we had a beagle that we took one day in the car to visit a friend who lived about 4 miles away. the next day he escaped and we get a call from that friend that he had shown up at their front door step to play... he found the way after only driving there once.

@Christina Janet it'll be very hard at first. But if you have patient neighbours then your dog will understand within a week that you'll leave and come back for them. They'll calm down after a while. But you have to make sure they get enough water, food and access to the toilet while you're gone. You might need someone who comes in once a day while you're gone, to tend to their needs. It won't be easy. They are the closest to human babies. Extremely intelligent and emotional. And especially when they are young they will really cling onto you. It's like having a familiar, not a pet. They are almost like cats but just that they don't do well on their own.

I used to put my two Beagles to the test. I would take them out in the Aussie bush and walk along an isolated track. When they got distracted by a scent, I would walk on ahead a few hundred yards and then leave the track and hide off in the bush. A few minutes later they would come racing along the track, noses down. They would stop just past the point I had turned off the track, backtrack, and then they would sniff me out in seconds. Every time. It was fascinating to observe them at work. They are gone now. My heart still breaks for them. What beautiful, loving creatures they were.

We had a Beagle for 13 years. I found, early on, that her separation anxiety was food related. When we were gone, she was afraid she would never eat again -- literally. I suspected that was the problem, so I bought one of those timed food carousels and filled it so that she would receive a portion of her food every 4 hours during the course of the day, while we were gone. Once she learned that bowl would feed her, all anxiety disappeared. I would come home and find her crashed out asleep. She would wake up, when she heard me, then would run to the bowl first to make sure she did not miss a feeding then come and greet me. So, our Beagle did not suffer separation anxiety, and it became a good indicator of her health. If she did not run to that bowl, when it spun around (it made a noise doing that) to gobble the food, I knew she was feeling bad so we would bring her to the vet. Our Beagle was not difficult to train either. I just used snacks. They are fixated on food and you can use that to your advantage. We kept her weight on target by, as the video states, regular and consistent exercise. She died at 13 years from cancer. That was about 4 years ago, and we still miss her terribly. She was very affectionate and every time she did come to greet us, we had to kneel down so that she could raise up onto her hind legs, place a front leg to either side of our neck and press her head to ours in a hug. If you did not kneel, she would pull at you with her front paws until you complied. She had to have her hug. Sweet dog. I cannot bring myself to replace her -- not yet.

Did yours Snore
@reesaserik3759
@reesaserik3759 6 ай бұрын
@@beaglelover338 Of course, she snored. She also barked in her sleep, and "ran" in her sleep (legs jerking and twitching). We decided she was dreaming about chasing squirrels and rabbits. Something else that was her absolute favorite thing to do was sort out treats. If we sat outside we would toss treats into the grass when she was not looking. It was amazing to see her go into action. She would be either sitting or wandering around, sniffing the ground, as Beagles do, and as soon as the wind turned in her direction her head would dart into a specific direction, and she would pick up her pace and actually sniff out the treat. Once she found one, she no longer needed the wind to help her. She would not stop until she found them all. And then she only stopped looking when it was time to go indoors and we made her come. During times with lingering bad weather and we could not go sit outside with her, I would hide treats all around the house, (on the floor, but out of sight). She would be walking across a room, her nose would pick out the smell of the treat, and the hunt was on. She always found all the treats, even if it took her all day long. She was a sweet friend. Sadly, they never live long enough.

I grew up on a farm, raised to not attach myself to animals, even our dogs and cats. I moved to the big city to work and raise a family which included a beagle I had for 14 years and 3 months. We had to put him down because of a "growth" that started around his behind and slowly spread inside to his spleen. Thru 2 surgeries 6 months apart he just wakes up out of the blue one morning shaking, tail tucked in, wincing in pain if anywhere around his belly is touched. I never imagined how attached I got to him and how emotional I got during his final moments. Thanks for the video...I could say my beagle was all that was mentioned in the video...and more

Our beagle is a rescue that went through 4 homes before he came to us. He has severe separation anxiety as you can imagine. But he is the most loveable boy ever. He falls asleep on the bed curled up but as soon as I turn off the light he snuggles up to me and steals enough blankets to be covered up. And yes, he is very vocal but getting better after 2 years of working with him.

I miss my beagle. He was 17 when we had to put him to sleep. He finished a whole bag of treats on his death bed, but when we took him to the park and he didn't jump out of the car we knew we were doing the right thing. I was 10 when we got him and we got into all sorts of mischief together. If you saw me, you probably saw him too. I can still remember him dragging me down to the creek and us both getting stinging nettles all over our legs. Only time he willingly jumped in a bath. Used to have to chase him up and down the street when he got out. He was my best friend and honestly I will never have a pet like him, even if they're another Beagle. Unfortunately before he passed he taught my current cat some bad habits...ah Morgan, I miss you!

All true! I own a beagle and I am so sorry and feel so guilty about it. I told my mother not to buy a beagle because neither of us are healthy enough to care for a beagle in the way they need to be cared for. Its been almost 3 years now and it would be so hard on Lylah (thats her name) as well as it would be on me. We do have a big backyard and she definitely gets all my love and attention. However, I am not well enough to train her and stimulate her mind. I wont get into my health but, i will say as much as this. "I would be dead if it werent for my babygirl Lylah"! I love her like no other. We have had a lot of dogs in our lives but this one is very special.

We bought a robotic lawn mower as company for our puppy.(not really) Well we thought they were getting along fine, until "Mowreen" declined to leave her base station in the spring. Turns out someone had used the dark winter evenings to excavate and sever the perimeter wire, in multiple locations. "Was this you Fitz?" was my astoundingly stupid question... Beagles have this way of averting their gaze.

That's been my experience, as well. Not a single one of the ten beagles I've had the pleasure of being their human enjoyed cuddling or being picked up, which is difficult since they are so dang cute you just wanna snuggle their cute little faces and hug them and squeeze them. That does not mean they won't hog the covers, steal your pillow or set a time schedule for their human to follow. Unless you live alone, it's not a good idea to allow a beagle to get the idea that your bed is their bed. Give them a bed of their own and they will happily settle down at night...as long as you are directly in their line of sight 8-)

I’ve had 3 beagles and only 1sts what I would consider clingy. It think it was more that she wanted attention/petting and not that she “needed” to be with me. I had 2 that barked, but my current beagle has barked only a couple of times in the 2 years that I’ve had her. She does “talk” though, which is a great deal of fun for my neighbors that she stops to talk to every day! I live alone so she sleep with me, so I get growled out every time I want to turn over…..that simply interferes with her 16 hrs of sleep!

And the brain puzzles, she liked that also verry much. We walked every day a lot. And with the beagle club we walked a lot, with a lot of beagles together. Sometimes with, let we say, twenty beagles and sometimes with more than 70 beagles. Beautiful to see so much beagles together. We and Rocky loved it. She was soooo sweet. We will miss her for everything. But beautiful memories. She was almost 17 years ons, heen she died.

I tell him Papa has to go and he would run to his kennel and wait for me to close the door. It was simple to do and we had so much fun with him. I could put food out and he would only eat it when he was hungry. My wife tested this when we went back to her house and said Barney you need a bath and he started for the bath tub and she said oh baby I was only playing. You are a good boy. She was just so amazed at how he minded all that we did.

Lol we ONLY had beagle mixes when I was a kid, so it wasn’t until my brother and his wife adopted a little purebred beagle puppy I learned all of these things. Especially how they run away...that pupper was a freakin’ Houdini. When he was still little and I watched him while they were at work, it didn’t matter how many exits I covered/made sure were unbeatable, didn’t matter how hard I tried to keep an eye on him or play to tucker him out - he KEPT disappearing from the backyard!!! It would be me throwing him the ball again, him running for it and then just never coming back because somehow in the six seconds he was out of my sightline he’d just be GONE from our huge backyard! I didn’t figure out how he kept managing this until a neighbor finally saw the little troublemaker literally jump from one of our tree branches OVER the 6 foot high wooden fence and then go down their tree just to eat out of their dog’s bowl on the other side!!! *sigh* man I miss that little troublemaker. He was a really good snuggler/impromptu pillow.

I agree with all you have said about beagles. Our boy is 9 years old and still youthful looking, energetic, and social. He has always been very attached to us. An amazing problem solver too. He worked out how to unscrew a jar lid when he was about 8 months old and pulled out a treat. Next day, and everyone since, he does it in under 15 seconds. I'm lucky he is reasonably attentive to me and I can walk him for short distances off the lead. I have to keep him close with verbal commands. He knows quite a few words too and will leave the room when asked, go to his bed, not take food until told, and lots of other tricks. Very fond of him, but he has been a challenge.

Pros: 1. They always look like sweet puppies no matter how old they are. 2. Those soft, floppy ears are not only a delight to pet but always funny to watch flopping when they're running. 3. They will eat anything you set before them so they will never be a picky eater. We've had 2 beagles for a total of 25 years. Here are my experiences compared to what's said here: Clingy - no. Energetic - no. Barking - 1 yes, 1 no. Cuddling - neither of ours wanted to be lap dogs. Foodies - absolutely. Stubborn - never noticed any. Needs attention - 1 wanted to be near someone, the other was more aloof. Naughty - 1 yes and 1 no. Cannot leave alone - 1 did poorly staying at the kennel, the other seemed fine. Running away - 1 yes but only if on a scent. The other didn't leave us even when hiking and off the leash. All in all if you really want a Beagle, get one. They were both lovely pets.

I have had five beagles in my life, and only one of them was a cuddle monster. Two of them liked to cuddle a little and the other two just like petted, but didn't really like to cuddle. Also none of them could be described as not leaving us alone ever. As far as leaving them alone, we never really had any problem with that so long as there was another dog around to keep them company. And that was mainly because they were bored, not anxiety driven. I know that because before we got our second dog, the first one would tear apart the bushes in the backyard even when we were home. I would say that the video describes how some beagles are. But as a whole, I think only three of the 11 comments were really consistent across all five of our pets.

@Christina Janet hi Christina, not sure if someone had answered before. In my experience beagles are more happy and healthy if you spend more time with them. They probably won't be bad with you gone 8hr/day, but they might become more naughty, bark more and learn bad habits. Our beagle went through separation anxiety when he was 3 months old up until he was probably 2 years old because our family of 5 all had work/school - it was very tough on him that we weren't there, he would bark for like 30min whenever someone came/left house. It took a while and we had to give him medication to help but he did eventually mellow out. Hope this helps!

I have had 2 previous beagle/beagle mixes, and one current one now. They are all really different. My first one when she was young would be naughty when you left, but after a couple years of training her, she did get better and didn't get into as much trouble as before. My second beagle didn't have separation anxiety disorder, till his best friend and our other dog (a lab) passed away. We ended up getting him another companion which is the beagle we have today. When our second beagle was getting older and near the end of his life we got an older chihuahua to help with the potential loss coming. My current beagle didn't really take to him, but tolerated him, he has had no separation anxiety. I cannot say if the chihuahua prevented that or not. (We have to leave him in a playpen because he is blind, so he doesn't even really stay with the beagle while we are gone.) But my current beagle hates bedroom doors being shut he has to know where everyone is in the house. I would say getting a buddy helps usually, but not everyone can afford that, but also keeping them in a designated area helps too when you leave. Again it really depends on the dogs personality as well.

In my experience, I learned how to help mine w sep anxiety and she's happy alone as long as she's had her exercise, peed and pood and upon my leaving has been given a treat....I wouldn't recommend leaving any dog alone for more than 3 or 4 hrs. In my experience w barking.....we have built a trust so that I listen to her bark. I thank her for the bark alert. She then knows to stop barking as she then feels safe that I will keep her safe and take care of what she has alerted me to....knowing that I have heard her and it's now time to let me lead so she doesn't need to continue the alert. My experience is similar to yours In the other areas......additionally, in my experience, they are happiest with off leash exercise as that gets them the exercise they need .........they can be taught to come back to you as long as you stay calm. Of course, they should only be let off leash in the woods or in a fenced yard and as long as you have taught recall. All of these results take time and gentle positive training. Beagle love is great. Good luck to all!!

I’ve had my beagle since I was seven years old she’s 13 now and going strong I would actually say she’s quite lazy does enjoy walks but not long walks she’s very social but she’s quiet as well except for the baying occasionally she sleeps with me every night and she’s very gentle she was a rascal as a puppy that will put up with literally anything loves children overall she’s amazing!

All 3 of my beagles, including my first when I was a toddler, are/were lazy! They sleep all of the time and only wake up to go out and eat. She must have an unusually active beagle. That has just not been my experience.

Beagles really are everything she pointed out. Had a little one back in the 90’s and she totally fits this description. She was very, very prone to mischief and very difficult to train; but she was so sweet that she earned the name Sugar.

I have had several beagles over the years. Mine are definitely NOT mischievous and are quick to learn and train. But, … yes they will not be able to find their way back home if they get out. The nose takes over but is not going to get them back to their home when it dawns on them they are lost and where is mom. Microchips and a good Collar tracker are a good investment. I have always taken in abused neglected beagles from rescues. Never have I been disappointed. They are a wonderful breed if you take the time and love to set the tone in a calm loving home. Routine is key. Your tone of voice with a beagle is key. They are very sensitive to your mood, and can easily pick up on your tone and face. Do not make a habit of yelling and boy are they quick to learn. All dogs do well when they know the rules, it give them confidence and sets them up for success in your home. Bad things about beagles, mine do not do well when the neighborhood sets off fireworks or there is a thunderstorm. They need twice a day feedings as many do get acid and throw up stomach acid if you are late or erratic in feeding them. They are never satiated and will always be jonesing for food, hence you frequently see overweight pups. Can get into trouble with their pancreas if given a high fat diet. Need a halter an not a collar due to spine issues in a “long back” dog. In all reality, a loving parent and cuddles will be more appreciated with a beagle then the treat. Love my pack.

I can't count on my hands how many times my beagle has managed to slip away (going home on his own when it's raining, visiting the neighborhoods dogowners who always give him food) we try to be cautious, but once in a while we get a message that he's hanging out with the neighbors or hear him barking at the front door, because sneaking in he hasn't managed yet.

You are absolutely right. They all have the characteristics. But adorable dolls. My girl is very choosy with her food though. We love her so damn much. Cant stay without her.

I have a beagle and she is 7 now, however I had to learn all of these the hard way especially number 11 when she got out of the house but going though the front door and running 2 blocks down the road because she decides let’s chase a cat or something, not thinking i had my pyjamas on, I grab her lead and I ran out that door so fast and chased my beagle 2 blocks from my house, yes still in my pyjamas with a rip in the left side of my bum check, oh yea amd all the houses have cctv, so yea she’s a difficult little lady, But she my beautiful beagle and I call her my princess, I love her to bits and she is my world, she is smart and picks things up real quick like tricks and searching for treats, and she loves her walks and I wouldn’t give her up for any money in the world, I can tell you storeys about my beagle but you be here forever, Trust me get a beagle they make your life a lot different, but in a good way they are great dogs,

My wife rescued a beagle from a backyard of a family that just moved away one day about 13 years ago. Harley became my best friend from day 1. When we had to move to an apartment we gave him to my parents since they have a yard. He's old, and deaf but when I go over there to this day he becomes his old playful self.

I can relate to most of these. My Beagle mix is my ESA. She was pretty easy to train, but she still requires the scent of food nearby to get her to follow a command regularly.
