Meaning, if fired upon by a hostile force, the US military's primary rule of engagement is to return fire with the necessary force to neutralize the threat while minimizing collateral damage, ensuring positive identification of the target as hostile, and only engaging when an imminent threat is present. So they will not be statues at the boarder. In regards to Pete Hegseth - he used to be a Fox News Morning weekend post, helped run multiple veterans charities, and is a US Military Veteran. I wouldn't say the military presence there is a vanity project. I know the thought is soldiers on patrol, which they may be legally prohibited from doing, but they can staff detention facilities, run transportation, surveillance, intelligence analysis, signal intelligence, and ISR. All of which are force multiplyers, and free up more border agents to do the interactions thao onle LEO's are legally permitted to do, and making each LEO more effective at the same time. Logistics are a huge drain on departmental resources for an operation like this, but logistics is the specialty of the US military.

Basically our southern border is a battleship taking on water with massive holes. We’re working hard to patch these holes and get it fixed. Once the border is stabilized and in fully functioning condition, then we can start having a conversation about the Drug Cartels themselves. The US will also not do anything militarily on Mexico soil without Mexicos approval… but as we’ve seen with the tariffs, that approval will come one way or another if Trump wants it. Drug Cartels will likely be on their very best behavior for the next 4 years. If they aren’t, then 💩 will get real, real quick.

Mr. Lboyd ... You are wrong on a couple points. First the Posse Comitatus Act that prohibits certain military branches from engaging in civilian law enforcement actions doesn't apply to every branch. The Act specifically calls out the US Army and US Air Force. It doesn't say anything about the US Navy ... OR ... the US Marine Corp (which falls under the Department of the Navy). While previous administrations Departments of Defense generally interpreted and folded the Navy and Marine Corp under that umbrella ... that doesn't mean that is has to. Or that it is legally required to. All it would take is the Justice Department and Department of Defense to craft some very clear guidelines and distinctions for the President to fully utilize the US Marine Corp in a law enforcement capacity at the southern border. As it currently stands the President can deploy the US Marine Corp (without Congressional approval) anywhere in the world at any time for any reason. It is the only branch that has that capability and flexibility.

There is a difference between the US Military working on US soil to counter foreign actors and the US Military working on US soil against its own people. BIG difference. You also don't need tanks or Bradley's. The reason you would use the insurrection act is not for foreigners, the military already can. But since these people are not designated enemy combatants it falls under civilian law. So they would have to be deputized so they could lawfully arrest. The insurrection act would be used so that the Military could assist in suppressing US citizen unrest. Say those on the left start rioting because illegals are being deported. The Military could then crush those rioters and arrest them. Again, no tanks need, no Bradley's needed, no humvees mounted with MK 19s. The military could also be used to arrest those that are fueling the unrest like Hakeem Jeffreies.

They most definitely can defend themselves even in the US so long as it meets the Law of Armed Conflict. Then the military is now allowed to make arrests and in tbe past that was not allowed. Finally, Texas has had the Guard deployed there for years as well at the DPS (State Police) GITMO was used when the Hatians were doing a mass migration using all kinds of unsafe boats etc. (The boat people) Finally Texas jas offered a large big of land to build a detention center
