I’m an “old” and have never played Borderlands, so I know nothing about the characters or what it’s about. I see Cate Blanchett in the trailer and I’m like “whoa- she looks badass. What’s this about?”

I will help you out. The story takes place on an alien planet called Pandora. There are stories about an alien vault that has treasure in it so a bunch of mercenaries come to the planet to try to find it. On top of the mercenaries, (called vault hunters) Are corporations looking to mine the recources from the vault for profit. It essentially leads to a huge war between regular people with private interests, and rich people with corporate interests... Shit... Wait...

Hey Rob and Angie. I have to agree with your critique. I'm trying hard not to judge this until I see it, but this trailer gives me the same uneasy feelings I had with Uncharted and Godzilla (1998). Those movies were okay, and if they had not been named Uncharted or Godzilla, I would have enjoyed them a lot more. Unfortunately, they were cinematic takes on great IPs that went on to lose everything people loved about the characters and story. This Borderland trailer feels so much like those films.

Not feeling it. Kevin Hart shouldn’t be playing Roland. Tiny Tina is acting way too sane. She should be out of her mind crazy. The only reason Cate Blanchett is playing her is because she looks like her in the game. Also Eli Roth hasn’t been good in a long time.

It seems like the casting was chosen simply by star power. Who are some of the biggest names we can get? And to an extent that's fine... But why hire Jack Black to play claptrap when you can get the original VA? Don't get me wrong. From what I saw here Jack Black is going to give a great performance in the role. Seems like he's having a ton of fun with it. But why? If you needed an actor for a role it makes sense. But this character is entirely CGI. They chose to pay more for Jack Black when they probably would have had to pay the OG less. (That is wrong by the way and not the point of this comment.) Unpopular opinion though, Jamie Lee Curtis is perfect for Patricia Tannis. The age is off, but I can ignore that because Jamie can pull off the introverted person who is bad with social cues role very well. Arianna Greenblatt is the perfect casting for Tiny Tina IMO. Cate Blanchett... I'm still on the fence there. Roland is a sore spot for me. I love Kevin Hart, but I think he is the most miscast person here. We don't see enough of Krieg to say one way or the other, but if the inner dialogue compared to the outer dialogue are accurate then that is comedy gold. In my personal opinion, this one is a 50:50 shot. And as a gamer, the hardcore gaming fandom will hate it no matter what. (I'm not one of them, I will at least enjoy it as it's own thing like I did with the original Mario Bros movie with Bob Hoskins and John Leguizomo.)

Yea original VA isn’t even doing the games anymore. If your gonna get the new guy they got doing the voice in the games why not just go with someone like Jack Black. Only issues I have is Kevin Harts size, and Cates age. If they wanna make a long running series of games Lilith gonna have to die sooner rather then later. Cate ain’t gonna be doing the action stuff that much longer. I don’t mind Kevin harts being Kevin hart. I just think Roland shoulda been a bigger dude. I’ll give it a chance though.

@@Midv1322 Thanks for letting me know all that. And I agree with all your points. Like I said I'm going into this the same way I did with so many game adaptations. By keeping the movie completely disconnected from the games. I find I enjoy the film adaptations more. Some fans can't do that. But that's how I can enjoy something as camp and ridiculous as Monster Hunter while others can't. Which is why ngl I'm probably gonna love this.

@@galerios1 Yea same, I’m a huge halo game fan and while it’s way different I’ve been enjoying the tv show. While watching people complain he’s out of his suit too much. Which ain’t wrong but I enjoy the show for what it is. While not a video game felt the same way about Lucifer. Absolutely nothing like the comics, one of those in name only type deals. But I loved the show they did make. The lead was great. Getting GOTG vibes here and to me that’s a good thing for me probably enjoying it. Loved all three GoTg films and the Christmas special.

So giving the movie a pass until it drops and just critiquing the trailer for the film, its presentation of the upcoming movie has spun far away from the heart of what made these games so good. I would have liked to see them embrace the same feel they used in the original game trailers in this opening movie trailer. Lose the Guardians of the Galaxy trailer feel. Return to that gritty, pulpy opening with the quick title cuts and a soundtrack that tells the story of Pandora and its inhabitants just like they did with all the games. What about treasure hunters!" Now, that would have set up the universe for all the new people seeing it for the first time and immediately put the current fan base in a happy place that would lessen the reenvisioning of the characters and the story plotting. They underestimated how important this first trailer was to find that perfect middle ground for introducing this live-action version.
