The big issue of the Vita version was that it could run much better if it wasn't trying to run at native resolution. WipeOut 2048 and Killzone used dynamic resolution for a reason, and Uncharted Golden Abyss and few other Sony made Vita titles also did not run the native resolution, that is probably why most of them run better than borderlands 2. But even then what Outer Worlds is for the Switch, Borderlands 2 is for the Vita, they are more a proof of "we can do it, but at what cost"

@@Mizgala28 Not every game has the same developer or the same engine. Like I get what u mean but comparing 3rd party games vs 1st party just doesn't work. Outer World isn't even an impressive on Ps4 or xbox and it still manage to run similar to the Switch version on base xbox (which shouldn't). Digital Foundry only showing the Xone X version made it seem like the game is well optimized on Ps4 and Xbox when overall it just isn't. That game is not more demanding than Witcher 3 but somehow Witcher is a way better port.

Fun fact: the borderlands 2 version on switch actually uses the port from the psvita. There's a small bit of text that the developers forgot to change in the main menu when messing with the network options that reads "You must connect to Playstation Network to play online."

I'm still on my first BL2 playthrough with a melee Krieg (currently at level 32 in a late game area of the game) and the performance held up pretty nicely throughout the game. I used Torgue weapons a lot in the beginning and even have a Nukem for critical revives. Yes, there are some famedrops when i go in full melee but it still runs great overall. Really good ports and still very amazing and fun games :)

It's cpu bound, can't do much for that. You can overclock your switch and install a 60fps patch though and it stays at locked 60

There is an argument for whether or not every game can get ported but whether or not they should. With all of the downgrades a typical switch port gets, I am usually picky. But there might be games that runs a bit worse on switch that I feel is a good fit on the system and I may get that instead.

Borderlands is one of my favorite series, and I'm so happy it's gotten such a great port to switch. I've been having tons of fun with it! Now that Borderlands 3 has been announced for switch, I'm excited to see the DF analysis. Despite the similar art style, it's a much heavier game and the PC and especially the Mac versions can be taxing at times, so here's hoping for some small technical miracles when it releases for switch!

Pretty much. The only thing causing drops are the alpha effects (because of the low bandwidth, this is a common issue on the system). Lower res alphas would help with that.

It’s been 3 years and I still laugh at all the people bitching about 30 fps instead of 60. Did any of you enjoy games on the ps3? The 360? Did no one enjoy and also have very fond memories on the ps2 or Wii? There’s even a good chunk of ps4 and Xbox one games that sometimes hit 60 but usually it’s around 50ish and those consoles didn’t have VRR so frame drops were apparent. Y’all spoiled af by modern hardware

@Steven Turner I never attacked any studio. I simply said someone did a better job. TPS is leaps and bounds better ported (the haptic is great, there is FOV, the frames are smooth WITH antialiasing, etc.) so while 1 and 2 aren't BAD...whichever studio that ported TPS did an objectively better job of it. According to the devs listed, it appears Behaviour Interactive would be the ones that did. Again - not trying to throw the games under the bus - I know most people don't enjoy TPS as much as B2...but you have to hand it to the TPS devs- it's a better port.

After playing Borderlands 2 for over 20 hours and about to start Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode, I can confirm that the frame rate issues do persist after the mentioned 3 hour mark; but, it's only noticable in elemental builds when multiple enemies suffering from status effects are swarming around the character. As for BL2 DLC, they definately run smoother, but the lower quality visual effects are fairly noticable in Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon's Keep and TK Baha's Bloody Harvest.

I wonder when the commander Lilith dlc is going to release on the switch . Currently on TVHM with gaige. Started of my play though right , got a bee shield , Harold and fastball . Should have included the Shield ports as well. Good way to compare Tegra x1 (swiitch portable) and tegra K1 since the shield port allows most pc settings you can make the settings equal. Then compare it to Switch Docked vs Nvidia shield TV.

The second game also has a glitch which prevents you from using the infinity pistol . I got one and the ammo counter for it is 0/x when it should be 1/x and it doesn’t allow me to reload or shoot which is weird . Hopefully a patch addresses that

Its great. The only thing really holding it back is the lack of virtual console. It basically the perfect emulation machine. Love having these older games on a handheld system. Got to lvl 80 and OP8, still runs smoothly. Even in pyro Pete's bar where its a cluster fuck. The fps does dip very slightly sometimes tho but still very playable. The fps DOES tank if you use an element on an enemy (lets say shock or explosive) and you scope in on them. For some reason the close up on the elemental effects hurts the fps.

What about the huge input lag? It's really bad. As a test I loaded up BL1 on my pc and capped the framerate to 30. It's way more responsive than switch. Thr joystick deadzone is also huge and not adjustable. Gyro only helps so much...

DF really needs to play the games they test for way longer. If you think drops are rare in the pre sequel you haven't played far enough. It gets super rough in 2 player splitscreen and we're not even halfway through the game yet. I will admit it's better than the PS3 version, but it'll drop frames just like the PS3 in big firefights which makes and FPS game hard.

Matthew Dawson On PC I’ve tried using a Ryzen 3700 and RX5600xt still drops to 40fps in areas. Same with my other build using RX570 doesn’t seem to matter what hardware I use with it.

I played BL3 on a 2500k (not overclocked), 8GB Ram and a SSD at 1080p. When it launched there were some texture streaming issues but a few weeks after launch (and the game being installed on my SSD) it ran pretty fine overall.

You really should do a comparison with the Nvidia Shield version of Borderlands 2. Since both the Shield and the Switch use the Nvidia Tegra X1 SoC, I think it would be interesting to see just what kind of improvements were made to the Switch port.

What the Vita version misses out on. DoF, bloom, AA, decent texture quality, AF, shadows, a stable FPS and resolution is 960x544. So in comparison to Switch Vita is ¼ the resolution with a much worse FPS, doesn't have shadows or the same quality texture assets as last gen. When you think about it the fact that really those are the only things Switch has over Vita its pretty weird especially since last generation hardware still has DoF and bloom over the Nintendo Switch.

@JJ Yes, keyboard and mouse exist, but some people own these things called "consoles" and might not want to sit at a desk or use a keyboard on their lap. Gyro makes it so controllers can aim better and so I hope Sony and Microsoft finally catch on to including it for people who want it

Well, if you don’t already own it, I can tell you that it’s a really solid port, it runs perfectly on my gaming rig, and even works on an old cheap laptop using integrated graphics

DF said BL 2 vita and outerworlds Switch were on the about same level for said systems, but BL2 vita ran a native resolution ( sure appears to, not a hint of blur, and it has high res textures for the vita, higher than most games) and, funny thing is that both the switch BL2 and BL2 vita dip to low 20's, of coarse the vita version does it more...but that bad boy really does fit in my pocket. P.S, Im not hating on the switch I just bought BL1 for it, and it's great (just wish I could buy the presequel, without BL2, I already played the crap out of BL2 (and the two together is a big file).

I would like an option to unlock FPS, and borderlands games run smooth 30fps at 307mhz gpu clock which mean it will run much smoother with unlocked fps and 384mhz (which a lot of switch games used)

So if they apply every technique used in the pre sequel, all 3 games would run at a locked 30FPS, Dynamic res would definitely allow them to add DoF to the first 2 games too...

Damn, the lack of blur effects makes the switch version look significantly better than xbox one in some very specific situations.

I'd love to know why on earth all those console ports don't want to use x16 aniso all the time. It cost nothing and doesn't even use more VRAM. For something with such a high impact, I simply don't understand.
