With Turtle shields you won’t get the full capacity.) *Accelerate 6:06 (Very good tier 1 skill. Bullet speed is not the same as Vel0city (zero’s skill), some similarity. Some guns like Pimpernel, Bekha, faster bullets affect their bullet pellets. Slight negative but not as bad as Vel0city.) *Suspension 7:35 (Most of the time you’re not going to need this. Can be boosted by class mod. If you’re going to use Sub-sequence then you need this.) *Kinetic Reflection 8:32 (Depends on build. Decent skill but the scaling makes this okay (OP8). Works only with bullets, can take splash, DOT, rocket launcher, grenade damage. Can trigger Cloud Kill and Chain Reaction because they count as your bullets (difficult to see if Accelerate can buff deflected bullet damage) *Fleet 14:02 (Helpful for farming runs. Doesn’t have a good class mod that boost something that energizes with Fleet.) *Converge 15:17 (Must have skill for Maya (derch). A crowd control skill, this is basically a singularity grenade. Makes other skills work well this skill.) *Inertia: 17:23 (Mitigates DOTs at OP8) *Quicken: 20:00 (depends on build, bone of ancient is enough) *Sub-sequence: 21:30 (must be 5/5, longer cooldown if no enemies are around or there’s flying enemies) *Thoughtlock: 25:17 (Alters your action skill. Makes an enemy your ally, good aggro relief. Be wary during co-op. Try it yourself if you will like it) Harmony Tree 30:45 (healing & DPS) *Mind’s Eye- 30:53 (Could be better, but not worth 5/5, good early on. Just one point with class mod) *Sweet Release- 32:37 (Best healing skill. A must if building a new Maya (derch)) *Restoration- 34:20 (Good for co-op. Can heal Axton’s Turret and Gaige’s Deathtrap. 1 point is enough at OP8. 5/5 if doing Nurse Maya) *Wreck- 36:57 (Great dps when enemies are phaselocked) *Elated- 38:10 (good even if playing solo. Mitigates DOTs) *Res- 40:55 (A must if playing co-op. Annoying every time you have to re-spec when playing co-op. Don’t res if teammate is surrounded by enemies.) *Recompense- 43:26 (scales badly. Useful in NVHM, TVHM, and up to OP3) *Sustenance- 45:55 (Immolate does not cancel Sustenance! Mitigates DOT’s.) *Life Tap- 48:36 (scales well. Makes using grog nozzle unnecessary if you have other skills in Harmony tree) *Scorn- 54:11 (Throw it above enemies not at ground level. Can be thrown in FFYL. Great for slagging enemies rather than using Grog Nozzle) Cataclysm Tree *Flicker- 59:48 (increases elemental chance, not DOTs. Decent skill. Great with Life Tap skill. Difficult to see if Scorn works well with Flicker) *Foresight- 1:03:38 (For sure get this one) *Immolate- 1:04:39 (Gun damage that deals, not what’s on the gun card. Not as strong at OP8, but still worth spending) *Helios- 1:07:43 (Decent skill paired up with Sub-sequence skill) *Chain Reaction- 1:11:59 (Best DPS skills) *Cloud Kill- 1:15:05 (Not DOT damage, but can cause DOTs. I know this video is over a couple of years old already, but I only recently started playing Borderlands 2 again and I wanted to say that I really appreciate that you made it. Maya was the second character I started playing and the first character that I seriously got into, and I keep coming back to this guide because it's the best resource I've found for learning how to play her better. This video helped me understand the importance of skills that combine survival and DPS, and what I learned from it I apply to the other characters that I play. Before this video, I thought Maya was really only effective as a healer or elemental; after, I fell in love with the survival, minor DPS, and major control play-style of Motion. Thanks so much!

Very detailed. I really appreciate all the information you have on all the characters. I feel like most videos just give very brief descriptions and don’t get into the details and how they will affect gameplay. I’m getting into borderlands pretty late, but I’m definitely enjoying it. Maybe next time wait to do videos until you don’t have a cough though. I could barely get through this video because of all the coughing and how close you sit to the microphone. I still havent found a build that isnt viable(for the most part). I respec when I go i to a new area. If im fighting flesh enemies I go mirrored trickster with sub sequence( sometimes thoughtlock). If im going down a lot and dont want to go "nurse" I'll use thoughtlock to get that agro. Since mirrored trickster doesnt work with melee enemies I'll do a more nurse build. I just love how versatile she is.

wish like hell we could get subsequence, ruin, and scorn. also wish she had more skills at the bottom of her skill trees, too. alos kinda skills in TPS just seem better, as well as wishing anything that couldn't be trapped in a bubble with phaselock, instead of taking damage, maybe get a phaselock DOT unable to trap them, but also make it count as having an enemy phaselocked, because she's got awesome skills that just don't work with some bosses because of no phaselock.

Derch, great video. Took me awhile to go through the content but well worth it. I now have my Maya to level 70 as of this writting. I have not had a problem in UVHM at all. I still haven't bothered with the grogg nozzel because ruin seems to rock!! immolation is not a skill I put points on. When I die, it's usaully from my stupidity or impatience. Thats my punishment for being careless {dying that is}. Also, I solo mostly so when I die I only listen to my own bitching and move on. Other than that, I've been following more of the dps Maya using the skills that you suggest. If I can nab a leg binder mod I'll try out the subsequence build for fun. I do have a co-op Maya. I only run her when my wife plays {she plays Gaige}. We are doing a full completion runs through all difficulties. I'm most likely going with the scorn build, so I'm hitting your scorn vid next. Thanks for all your hard work bud!! Keep it up!

This video helped me immensely recently in picking up OP8 in Bl2, although I'm late as hell to the party, but recently I discovered a gun, Little Evie, that I notice you don't mention, but I found to be insanely fun and awesome. With it, and a few other cooldhown boosters Maya has, you can get enough Cooldown rate for Phaselock to be able to pick up every mob on the map. That made Maya feel almost like Nisha! Granted, I love Nisha, and as far as I know - you don't - but still, why is an effect like that isn't worth mentioning?

This video is awesome. Playing thru uvhm lvl 66 and I'm struggling a bit. Been playing on and off since 2014 only maya, so i needed some gear guides to get through the game. Got the bee hawk but i cant get hyperius past 90%hp lol. Will farm some shotguns and a new class mod. Thanks again friend

I've watched this video twice now, because Maya is that much fun. And this video is awesome. Great point about the legendary class mods kind of forcing you to choose them. I mean, it makes sense I guess, so they're worth the farm, etc. But the fact that Maya has a blue com or 2 which can really shake that up is fantastic, and something they should go all in on. The tricksters are really specialized on some really fantastic skills, and when you can get 11 points in either KR or CR, things get really fun. I like the idea of legendaries being able to give really solid all-around boosts to key points in general play-styles (aka, smg queen, and nurse), but then have the blues able to really turn certain skills literally up to 11 to where you can change your game completely around them. They leaned into this idea pretty well with the tricksters, but I don't feel like the others (not sure about other characters' coms) stood on their own very well. 11 points into Ward or Helios or even Foresesight just doesn't really change things, but having nearly every bullet reflect off enemies or 100% off yourself+healing you is just really freaking cool. Or imagine if Recompense actually did work. O_o I'd love to see more care put into these possibilities. Even just the few Maya has makes things so much more interesting.

One thing i haven't heard mention about the blight Phoenix skill is that it'll catch a krieg character if they took the skill that allows them to take damage from friendlies. Found that out the hard way when i popped into my son's game and he came up to me right after it activated and dropped like a rock.

I disagree with your point at about 53:00 where you say the Grog is a waste of a gun slot. Sure, it can be, especially if you never need it but I disagree with your assessment that you need all of your gun slots as Maya. You really don't, especially if you're rolling with a Bekah and a Twister, of all things. She's right up there with Sal when it comes to not having to swap weapons. We obviously have very different approaches to Maya (flexibility, as you well know, is her strong suit) and for the most part I follow all of your logic but I just can't agree with you about her not being able to spare a weapon slot for pure utility. Hell, I barely even use my 4th slot because I can't figure out what the hell to do with it (between the Bekah and a good sniper rifle I only need 2), and I even carry around Grog in the 1st. Major props though for the excellent explanation of the double-edged sword that is Subsequence. People tend to get set in their opinion on that skill and ignore the other side of the argument. You did an excellent job examining it and avoiding bias. Personally I love it. I don't use Scorn so I find multiple AOE slags per CD to be invaluable and well worth the occasional hangups. As for the COMs I think you were a bit harsh on the Cleric. Great passives you can tailor to your taste (LE is a nice sniping COM but falls second to the Binder and CN/CG can be a ton of fun with a Fleet build and a gun like the Tattler or Butcher) and increased uptime on CR, Elated, and Wreck via Suspension. I agree with you on the Restoration boost being unnecessary and underwhelming (yet you love it being boosted on the Nurse COMs, found that odd) but Life Tap is welcome, and if you leave it at 6/5 (or 7/5 if you get a blue without Restoration) you can do a 20/21/26 Fleet build with a Rough Rider, short cooldown on Phaselock, and a strong health stack. I also feel like you should've mentioned how well suited the Legendary Binder is for sniping with sub-sequence. You can get 4 or more easy pre-slagged headshots on a group of enemies (even more if you use Thoughtlock and are confident with your aim). I figure you missed this because you aren't a huge fan of sub-sequence. Great video. Always enjoyable to listen to someone who gets into skill builds and synergy as much as I do, and even better when they know their stuff and have differing opinions to my own. To finalize this loooong comment I have a question. In one of Fiber's Maya vids (I believe the Interfacer one) he says that extra pellets spawned before the target went below 50% health still get a reaper bonus when they hit. This sounds dubious to me (how/why would the game know the fired shot will hit the enemy until it does?) but Fiber tends to know his shit so I wonder if you have any insight on the validity of that claim. I am quite interested in the answer since, like you, I looooove me some Bekah and this edge case would be applicable to it.

I agree about the grog but I mainly use it to slag. I get torn between the grog and magic missle as what to slag with. It's nice using the fastball/ grog combo. So to me the healing is just a bonus next to the slag

it was less about the grog being a waste of a slot, more, maya's kinda cool in that she doesn't need to. hell, you could potentially just go into the menu and change shit out as needed. also, this works with all weapons, not just being reliant on weapon swapping, using the grog + a grenade.

Honestly never used a Rubi or Grog for major emergency healing, just transfusion grenades. I dont use Grog for slagging because I am not that good at quick aiming thats why I use Slaga

If you want to make Maya really good, fill out her whole elemental skill tree, then go far enough into the crowd-control tree to get Converge and Inertia. Sweet Release and Wreck are great adds too. Elemental doom for all!

Another cool thing about Maya is that she is the only character who has inherent access to all the useful utility effects you can get from grenades. 1. Transfusion - check 2. Singularity - check 3. AoE Elemental - check 4. Slag on demand -check Other characters have these capacities to an extent, but nowhere near as comprehensive or as easy as it is with Maya. So I love using the Fastball on her to shore up what I feel is the only area she naturally "lacks" in which is single target nuke. She has unimpeachable crowd control built into her kit, so the only times I really *need* grenades is to whip out some Fastballs for Badasses or other priority targets I just don't want to deal with.

thank you for this comprehensive guide. i learned much useful info! so, if i'm making killer Maya build designed to maximise damage (leg. cat/leg. siren) - green-tree and red-tree are more important. the only blue-tree musthave skill is wreck (and maybe mind's eye) . everything phaselock-related except trouglock is musthave. everything damage-related musthave. element-related musthave is cloud kill and ruin and maybe some ricochet-relating skill, some kill skills, some other maybe some heal if perks will be enough thank you again!

Healing skills like lifetap do help damage because you can keep your big guns out and do damage rather than run for cover or swap to a healing gun. Also scorn being a second slag skill to ruin let's you debuff more to do more damage

Super old but I love coming back. Sub-Sequence would be amazing if it was a one point game changer, gave you wreck/chain reaction/etc even while searching a new target and immediately looks for a new target after phase locking an enemy who can't be picked up. Finally, after two years of swearing by Gaige, I finally started a Maya, and oh my god I love her. Gaige is still more fun with my haphazard jump-into-the-mass-of-bodies playstyle, but dear lordy is Maya also a blast! Thanks so much for these videos, I think I might finally know how to do a decent build for her now! Although, if anyone else is watching this now, I really want to have both Scorn (especially with the UCP 10-second cooldown) and Ruin, so I can't go terribly far down the Motion tree. In general, what skills should I pick, and should I go for as many 5/5 skills as I can, or try to split points between them with some 2/5 and 3/5?

Maya is the most accessible character in my opinion. At the same time though, her skills are very complex and you can do so much with Maya. As of now she is the only character I care to play.

You can just put 1 point into fleet and carry a banshee classmod in the backpack so if you wanna get somewhere fast or farm sth with a long way to it you can still get a 70% Speed boost which is still huge and you only have 1 point wasted from your overall build Thats what i usually do when leveling up a new maya But with the new lv 80 cap i usually end up with 5/5 in fleet anyways cause i get the 2 slag capstones inertia and could pretty much only invest in quicken or some lower tier stuff then and since im running bone and legendary siren in most combat the diminishing returns of further cooldown buffs make quicken less of a priority for me

I used kinetic reflection and it got amp damage with the bee shield, so i think it gets buffed by her skills

Maya has always been my favorite character to play in BL2. I’ve used Zero a few times too but Zero seems way better when you are into TVHM cause that when you can get the throwing knives without it hindering you kinda. Most people go sniper or melee first play through and then in TVHM and UVHM is where he really shines. I usually use the sniper tree cause of Bore my first time through.

Was playing the tiny tina one shot adventure with Maya and 2 quests were almost impossible to do due to cloudkill had to repec to do those quests. The grog nozzle and where you have to kill the 3 npc's in the graveyard.

it'd be also cool if the "instant damage on non-phaselockable enemies" was instead a phase based DOT, that way her phaselock skills can be used on those foes as well, rather than being either useless or wasted on another enemy.

there is one tiny Tina class mod that boost magazine size immensely to above 60% I don't know if it was the same with different passives but I like using that one just to chuck enemies to death once in awhile

Because of the very low pellet count, the prefix on the butcher matters a LOT more than for most other shotguns. A standard butcher only has 3 pellets, the Practicable Butcher (with the vertical grip accessory) has 5 pellets, a huge DPS increase, and that's the one you are demonstrating. Just saying. Some of those other Hyperion shotguns, that prefix has about a +10% impact on DPS, but for the butcher it's a +66% impact. It's like it's a totally diferent gun.

If you want to crank up the damage even further, you could grab Make It Sparkle and Robot Rampage. I'm pretty sure the damage bonus from Make it Sparkle inherits roid damage.

Antagonists goes really with kinetic reflection as you get both the damage redux form kinetic and antagonist and both the skill and shelids delection chance can proc at y9uyhe same time giving you 900% bullet damage back at the enemy this is with a 800% damage antagonist, so if you have those ward with siren com and gid recharge on antagonist have a really fun time. And kinetic also is really good at 5 out of 5 with intertia cause no damage given back, i wish the patch would trade back for kinetic relfection or inertia on slayer of tera com that would make that one alot better especailly cause backdraft is a dead skill to use

I know slag is your best friend in op8 however since the antagonist on maya can constantly slag due her skills and the antagonist its self be really good in that way cause the 800% can get bonus of 3 times on slag. Also antagonist on maya having ruin, and scorn should equal a nigh 100% slag to every enemy correct? Making the antagonist probably the best shelid on maya?

@@andrewmarklowitz2728 Yep While playing as Maya, i keep 1 Slag Pimpernel in backpack just in case, but never use it because Maya have 2 great Slag skill (Scorn and Ruin) , not to mention antagonist shield Maya doesn't have skill that boost weapon switch speed so by trying to switch weapon, you lose your DPS
