Great review guys. I always blame producers for bad movies. Ari Arad produced this and he's also been responsible for such gems as Uncharted, Ghost in the Shell, the Ghostrider movies and the Punisher movies. He's obviously an idiot. Ali Roth is an amazing horror movie director, not an action-dark-comedy director. Kevin Hart is a great comedian but not a action movie leading man. I could go on. Everyone was mis-cast/mis-hired from the top-down so it's not surprising this failed.

Daaaaamn. I figured it'd be at least mildly entertaining, but wow!!! I feel like Tiny Tina, Kreig and even Claptrap were okay casting, but the main three should've been Karen Gillan or Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Lilith, Kate McKinnon as Tannis and Trevante Rhodes as Roland.

After seeing early reactions and (especially) this review, my already low enthusiasm for this movie somehow fell even more. This was a total and complete misunderstanding of the target audience for this series on the studio's part. They worried so much about casting huge stars and keeping this to a PG-13 rating that it will never come close to doubling its budget (estimated at around $110-120 million).

Maybe some thoughts insights to why it is the way it is - It starting shooting ages ago, Lionsgate releases a lot of Direct to Video type action movies so they are probably putting bottom line first. The director Tim Miller was brought into do reshoots because Eli Roth had schedule conflicts. I am sure also a lot of bad decisions were not privy to. The unfortunate part is we have yet another lame Video Game Adaptation in a long line. Unfortunate because a good Borderland movie is completely possible.

There's a trap in writing when you have a pre-existing world to work with. You end up trying to make everything authentic, often out of love for the franchise, but chain yourself up in the process. It becomes a kind of artificial resurrection. You have to liberate yourself to create whatever YOU want to create, otherwise you are fighting against yourself.

Not all games translate well to other mediums. Borderlands' world is interesting, but it's stories are pretty week, and it's mostly the mechanics of the game that shine - there's nothing there that screams "make this into a movie" outside of crazy action sequences with shoestring story and character connecting them.
