I think it truly is too multiplayer dependent. I don't think I could have completed all the Borderlands if I weren't playing with another person. When playing multiplayer the loot and shoot mechanics feel a lot more rewarding because you can start trading loots and allocate resources with more tactical options to tackle the maps. The fun dialogue is the icing on the cake. Without multiplayer, it's just a slog fest.

I seriously loved solo Borderlands. I definitely cannot stand multiplayer though. All the people I get are shit, or there's a small chance of them being good. Then the good ones always invite you to EVERY mission. They added a lot to Borderlands 2 though, and it is better.

While I love both Borderlands games, a game can't rely on multiplayer as its measure of quality. Once the servers go down, all you're left with is a shit solo experience and maybe local co op.
@ScaryWombat7 жыл бұрын
Having never played it on anything but solo or local co-op, I really don't think there's much to lose there. As a local co-op experience it's pretty damn good, providing you and that friend are the kind of people who are patient (don't mind waiting for other people to finish fiddling with their inventory) and actually enjoy working as a team, not just in the same space.

the biggest problem i had with borderlands was scaling, i.e. there was none. this means, if you'll go and complete all the sidequests parallel to the main quest, you'll out-level all the enemies half way throught the game and this will make the already anti-climatic final boss even more mundane. the game is not as grasping as the sequel and the replay value didn't last very long for me, but co-op with friends really balances the drawbacks. so, if you are going to play alone and are looking for a challenge: skip the bulk of the side quests and stick to the main story. if you're left wanting more, switch to the dlcs rather than pursuing 100% completion or a second walkthrough.
@nesman19278 жыл бұрын
I COULD NOT AGREE WITH THIS MORE! I finished the game yesterday, and just as I thought it was getting good it threw me at the final boss which was extremely easy! I only moved twice during the whole fight and beat it without dying or even losing my shield ONCE! At first I thought it was a trick ending until it gave me 20000 dollars and told me to go fuck myself with two low tier weapons and a better luck next time.

I'm actually very happy right now, not only have I seen a reviewer that doesn't like Borderlands, but I see the comment section is full of people who didn't like Borderlands! It's not like a hate train thing, but it was just so boring and at some point I really lost interest in this game overall because let's face it. The long traveling, repetitive gameplay (which was kind of interesting at first) and small enemy pool was used up in about the first 30 to 60 minutes of game time.
@cmeehan1185010 жыл бұрын

I'm weird when it comes to Borderlands, I want to like it - I like the writing (Particularly in #2, then again I really like Ashley and Anthony Burch), I like the art and style, but I just find the games dull and repetitive and even with friends I just can't get into it. I normally like Dungeony-Crawley type games and I don't disagree when people say its like Diablo but in first person, but that doesn't change the fact that it's like Diablo in first person... if it were really dull.
@kayeplaguedoc905410 жыл бұрын
Asylum Demon I honestly find this assumption annoying. Yahtzee does NOT hate everything, bleh, he admits to liking plenty of games. Is he a little more jaded, cynical, and picky? Yeah, but he isn't just EVERY GAME SUX. Plus he sometimes plays it up more for laughs.

Kay Bardsley ill admit you have a point there but i really cant take a reviewer seriously when they only point out the bad points in a game borderlands is plenty fun
@AkiChan32310 жыл бұрын
Asylum Demon Go watch his review of Portal, he actually says tons of good things about the game. He says good things about quite a few games actually, and you'd probably know that if you watched all of his videos. It's understandable if you didn't have the time or patience to, BUT, he doesn't hate everything and he doesn't always just point out the bad things in games. And if you actually watched this video all the way through you would have heard him say that it was a well presented game with really good writing, but it isn't very entertaining and that's just HIS opinion. What is entertaining to one person might not be entertaining to another, not everyone is going to like the same things.

For some reason I can't stand Borderlands multiplayer. I enjoyed the first game playing by myself, where I could keep all the guns for myself, do the quests at my own pace without people wanting to do them in a different order which would fuck up my quest tracking and mostly because I don't like playing with other people that much. I've played enough League of Legends to feel like Yahtzee and give up any form of human interaction over the internet with people I don't know.

I came to the franchise via Borderlands 2. I was surprised to see that some people thought this game was better. **shrugs** To each, their own. From my perspective, this game is a grind-fest, with no apparent direction. The side-quests are often mind-numbingly boring and what's worse is that you're compelled to play them through unless you wish to save and then start over from the beginning. (An example of poor game design.) And seriously... What kind of game demands that you play through it multiple times in order to get the true experience the developers intended?
@HermeticDisorder9 жыл бұрын

This is the only game review I've ever disagreed with you on. I thought I'd disagree with Quantum conundrum, being that it was made by the developers of portal, but you were right it sucked. Borderlands, however, is in my personal top 5 favorite games of all time, and I can't really seem to understand why you don't like it. All the complaints in this review are either so minor I didn't care, or I just plain think you must have been playing a different game. The GUI for example I thought was well done, not excellent mind you but better than most, and the story is at worst good and at best spectacular. Lastly I find claptrap very entertaining and only annoying in the little brother kind of way where you want him to stop saying why at the end of every sentence, but you love him because he's fun to throw eggs at, or in this case MIRV grenades.

You're confusing him doing his job with him hating everything. Yahtzee is a critic, it's not his job to do what a lot of "game journalists" do, basically droll over any game, he points out the flaws. He doesn't hate them, he's just explaining why they aren't perfect.

Also, in addition to Molly's point, James Cameron had a script for Avatar well before Borderlands was even thought of. The only reason he didn't make it at the time was it would've been too expensive at the time around the 1980's I think.

I may like borderlands, but i can see what he is saying and i love the way he reviewed it.

I played borderlands for 4 days straight and didn't know what the hell i was doing until i was doing a mission to over throw a bandit town ruled by the quest givers brother. Only for the brother to give me the same quest again. That's when i asked myself "how does this link with the main plot?" turns out i was turning in quest after quest, some one would ask me to do a quest and i would go "fine" then they would go "oh by the way..." and i did that until i was doing anything which was not involved at all with the main story. so in the end i was making no progress at all so i went "fuck it i'll give it to my cousin and maybe he could sell it while he's at it"

thomas jones Are you trying to say you were doing side quests, and it surprised you that it wasn't advancing the main plot? Was this your first RPG ever?

HeyZeusss honestly after hearing clap-traps voice after a while my brain switched off and then back on again 4 hours later

I watched my old roommate play it all the time and normally I love watching people play video games. (I'm weird I know, don't judge me). But that game. I would rather drill screws into my toes than watch/play/anything-to-do with that game.

Yay! DnD Reference! *hugs Yahtzee for tickling her inner geek, then remembers he hates human contact and lets him go back to his hermitage*
