Unsportsmanlike??? Did you not see the ace he was awarded, and then HE told his opponent to challenge, and he was right, his serve was actually OUT. How is this an unsportsmanlike person? You might not like how he behaves, but in terms of his own fairness towards his fellow players, Nick does not cheat. If you look at his ongoing conversation with the umpire, this stems from his own feelings of unfair treatment from the umpire. Fair treatment for ALL, not just himself, but his opponents, is very much on Nicks mind. And when he sees something he disagrees with, he's not shy about calling it out.

@@marcelobarros5729 When people talk of sportsmanlike, I look at the question of whether or not a player is a cheat, OR, if they recognize that something might have been decided by a mistake, and if so, what to do about it. There are a LOT of players who are aware that officials make a mistake, but if the mistake goes in THEIR favour, they shut up, or pretend like they dint know whats happening. Look at Jack Draper and his recent shot that went into the ground first and bounced over. Yes, I might say that Nicks' behaviour wasnt like a politically correct puppet here. But I ask you a simple question, does Nick cheat, or does he play fair? Forget all the distraction of the running commentary (which I've already addressed). Once you cant tell me you think he's either a cheat, or fair, please let me know WHY you say whatever you say.

This match sums up Nick just about perfectly. Much rather just use his talent to put himself in impossible situations on purpose to show he can still win the point. Half the time he thinks he's trolling the whole world like some tennis incarnation of Andy Kauffman and the other half he scared to deal with all the expectations of his talent. He's a coward who hides behind his tennis talent and plays the victim card. Just another wasted talent. I think he'd be happy to be the biggest wasted talent for now.

For me - Kyrgios is a great example of no matter how talented you are at something, it doesnt matter if you don't put in the hard work also. Talentwise Kyrgios is the closest you get to Federer, yet his career is the complete opposite. As a wise man once said: You can archieve almost everything in this world with no talent if you work hard enough - And no matter how talented you are, it won't take you anywhere, if you are not willing to put in the hard work also.

@@matthewburgar2626 Well, I became suspicious that it was even possible to play as a #800 ranked player to compete in a atp1000 event (as someone else in the comments also noticed) so I had to look it up . Even to be able to qualify (as Klahn did earlier in this event) it isn't possible as a #800. Only as a wildcard it is, but you have to be a high ranked player coming back from injury or some sorts. If Nick played against a true #800 ranked player, he would've won easy in two sets even in this static behaviour he displayed in this match.

Klahn is an NCAA singles champ (Stanford) and multi time All-American. Nick was treating him like he was the opponent in a Harlem Globetrotters game and paid the price. His overall attitude is disrespectful to the game, and in this instance his behaviour I thought was dismissive of his opponent because he was ranked so much lower. The issue for Nick is that tennis is an individual sport so you don't have coaches that can hook you mid match for having a bad attitude. There's very little accountability. You do something stupid and lose, you just play in the next tournament. Imagine producing this in a Sir Alex Ferguson team. You wouldn't play again and be shipped out in the next transfer window.

We see all of Kygrios's mental health on display here. From not wanting to really be out there, to disrespecting his lesser ranked opponent, to picking a fight with the ump, then finally trying to gaslight his opponent with compliments after winning shots. Currently he's riding on that Wimbledon match against Novak and his commentating gigs. He's somone who is clearly afraid of success and the pressure it would bring in terms of expectations. Therapy is needed and not for his tennis but his mental health going forward.

Yes. There is a clause in the rulebook for giving effort. I believe Nick has been fined for tanking before. There are clips of Tomic online giving low effort and he got penalized for it. Players are expected and required to give their best effort.

Glad that you enjoy that kind of thing but tennis as a sport (compared to ice hockey for example), through all of the rules and regulations, aims to be a grace/class sport. Antics are generally discouraged and most officials prefer to keep it out of the sport/image.

No player likes to play in Chinese tournaments, many of the players only play there because of the show bonus. That's why you always see so many upsets there, especially during the first couple of weeks. I guess Nick was just one of the players that just want to grab the bonus and head home.

@@hehehehehahahaha2025 Well, I think it is a schedule thing. They are played late season, and the ATP Tour is a freaking grind, and not all players are mentally tough enough to withstand it all. I think Kyrgios missed his family and friends. Just because you have a boat load of talent does not mean that you have a strong drive to be the best. While thousands of players wishes that they had Kyrgios' talent, he wishes that he had the motivation of others. It is very rare to see a strong combination of the two. Some extremely talented athletes would rather have a normal life away from the spotlights and fame, but their talents keep them in the game.

@@hehehehehahahaha2025 There are many reasons - 1. The tournament schedule - The tournaments are played in late season, and the schedule is usually very tight. Plus it's the season which it rains a lots, matches are often delayed, which makes the schedule even tighter. 2. The weather - Apart from the rain, wind, air pollution and temperature difference is also quite bad there. The wind can get pretty strong sometimes, and air pollution could affect how you breath. Temperature difference between day and night is also huge, so if a match was delayed from mid-day to evening, it'd deffo be a problem. All of the above can affect how a player performs. 3. The line judges - The line judges used to be very awful there. Though they have improved and there's hawkeye system now, it can still be quite annoying sometimes. 4. Corruption - I used to be tennis player in Taiwan, it's well known and often discussed between the players that the authorities in China often offer a bonus to players to lose the matches against local players. This way they can give the players a ranking boost, make local people feel proud, and increase the ticket sale. It's a well known screct that no one wants to talk about, because ATP/WTA needs the money, and players don't want to get into trouble by making it public. You can see that by seeing how fast they resumed back to play in China after Peng Shuai incident. It's also a hard choice for players, because they don't want to say yes, but if they say no, they're going to risk losing sponsorship from Chinese companies. That's why many players would rather just not play there at all.

@@v4v819 To me, talents are the things you cannot teach. Thus, I think the defensive specialists are less talented than the shot makers. I know that there are defensive talents, especially the return of serve, but grindy players like Mats Wilander and Lleyton Hewitt are more teachable because the mental part increases with experience. Shot making is much harder to teach, and first serve in particular. Only rating the shot making play style I'd put Kyrgios at Tier S in talent among Federer, Sampras, McEnroe, Becker, and Edberg. Kyrgios' lack of motivation was his downfall. Rating defensive players I'd put Borg, Agassi, Nadal, Djokovic and Wilander significantly more talented than Murray. Defensive players win by grinding down their opponents and making them miss. It is very efficient, and the changes of the surfaces, making the grass significantly slower has certainly helped them win tournaments. So, being biased against defensive players, I'd put Kyrgios talents over Wilander, Hewitt, Murray etc. I mean, if Murray had Kyrgios first serve, then he'd win so many grand slams.
