Not sure how many times I’ve come back to rewatch this. I restore antique Louis Vuitton, Goyard trunks so I’ve done all of this individually. I’ve learnt so much from this one video. It’s filled in a lot of blanks I had of the techniques. Is this work? Hobby? Cheers. Darren.
@boreoff10 ай бұрын
Hi Darren, thanks for your encouragement - it's just a hobby for me but I have been woodworking and leatherworking for a long time now....how interesting that you restore trunks - is that enjoyable work? Yes trunk making is harder than it looks - the workshops in France start with pre-drilled leather and plywood and will have access to the right tools and materials which was certainly not the case here but I managed to end up with something fairly close I think and I am really happy with it...warm regards

@IOTWVUVWTOIАй бұрын
@@sloanwestwoodvideo shows most of what is required. Note: a box was created and then cut into 2 to create the box and lid/top. That is essential. Templates made using what i assume to be painters tape/masking tape? A basic box with decent results is fairly obtainable for most. The extra design and details and the care/skill involved is what really elevates the one in the video. Take your time, be patient, measure twice cut once. Start by familiarising yourself with the process. Plan it and make notes/drawings as a guide. Then take your time and enjoy the experience. You will find just having made a few basic boxes will increase your confidence considerably. We all have to learn and start somewhere!

I was tempted because my friend is black and she is often asked if her bag is fake. People just immediately assume they are. Even though I'm white, I still get people asking me if my bag is real. So I thought why should I spend so much money on these bags? So in the end I chose to buy it at *condup* . Even if it is not the original, some replicas can have special emotional value because they are connected to specific memories

I’m so sorry that I didn’t get this video come up for me sooner. It combines my 2 passions - woodworking (been doing that for over 45 years) and fine leather work (10 years?). I have made quite a few pieces in homage to brands such as Hermes for family and friends and found the real difficulty in finding the right leather, hardware etc. Luckily, I found a guy in HK and the quality of his stuff is first class. I’ve got a feeling that a trunk might have to be made!

Funny. What you are calling banal chitchat, is to me much of what would make this a more instructive video. Things like what is this tool called. Why this tool ( why a drill press for some holes, vs the hand powered drill, or the cordless power tools used) And generally a why of this project that is producing something too heavy for a carry around bag, and too small to be luggage. None of that is mentioned.

Hi there, thanks very much, are you referring to the trunk borders? LV doesn't use leather, they use a canvas or for the borders they use something called Lozine which is a vulcanized fibre. Both can be sourced - have a look on Etsy for some good quality 1mm checkerboard canvas. I used French leather for the borders which I think is nicer than Lozine. Hope that helps...cheers and bon courage with you project...
