I want to show you guys how I bore out cylinders and cut them down for more compression. In another month, I will be getting very busy doing motorcycle machine work. I work on motors and transmissions, I no longer build out bikes or work on other peoples whole bikes anymore.
If you would like any machine work or motor work done just give me a call or send it in. Dont forget to put a note in the box with what you would like done along with a return address and phone number, and pack it really good.
Shop T-shirts: www.dragonmans.com/store -- they ship out the next day!

You have a great setup, Mel. I was a machinist, but I didn't do automotive type machining. I made all types of parts for industrial applications. The shop I worked for had a similar honing machine, Bridgeport milling machines, and all types of milling and turning machines. We used the very same dial bore gauges you have and that's how I know you have a great machine shop for motorcycle engine repair.

When i was boring a wide array of engines the customers with the Harleys were the worst some would bring the barrels back and say it has to much clearance look the piston wobbles so then you have to explain to them that the piston is not round it may look round but it is not, the clearance is measured at its largest point which is at the bottom of the skirt 90 degrees to the gudgeon pin. The harley guys always thought they knew best.

i don't know when the last time you weighed a set of pistons, but those junky cast pistons weigh a lot more than a nice set of forged pistons. I know, I've been doing this for 30+ years and still doing it today. After you start cutting the cylinders down you have then thrown off the intake manifold and pushrod length. Then you still don't have much more compression because those junky cast pistons seldom ever oil out to what they are advertised for also. I know. I do that quite often too. Then you end up with cylinders that are too short and you can throw them in the trash because when you put a good set of pistons in them there will not be enough length for the top piston ring. Also the 100 grit roughing stones should only be used to straighten out the cylinder and the 280 stones should take out the last .005" so you have a nice finish, not a rough finish.

I do 2 stroke outboards in my shop. I use 280 grit to hone out the last .001 to get a plateau hone. Also my Kwik way bar gets a cylinder within.0001 so there’s not much straightening to do.
