Boring pottery bowl makeover-how to turn a simple bowl into a chip n dip centerpiece!

In this video, I demo how to alter the rim of a wheel thrown bowl on the pottery wheel to make a chip and dip or spiral bowl. They look so nice on the table while entertaining! Perfect for the holidays.
I used about 5 pounds of clay and threw a wide based bowl. Once trimmed and leather hard, I cut the rim in a spiral motion (not an even straight line cut). Then I work on forming the dip part of the bowl into the piece…then I slip and score and add a coil. Pretty simple and really fun to make!

Lol we all do that don’t we?! Sometimes I will make 2 or 3 bowls to allow myself the freedom to mess up and just play and create! I’ve made some of my best pieces being free and easy. Glad the video helped…thank god for you tube 😂

This is amaaazing!! I had no idea how this was done! Duh! Lol. Sorry for noticing but there is a hole right at the base of the dip bowl. Do you need to worry about that or just leave it? I have a mold that I think this would work really well on!! So for the pointy edge definitely use a sure form, hand held cheese grater lol. It would have been perfect for this. Soo fun. I can’t wait to make one!!

I think I know what you mean …I don’t think it’s anything to worry about but I could have filled it in 😂😂. I did make 100 percent sure any liquid wouldn’t get out. Yes the sure form! I made a kiln opening video but ong girl I said Umm about 250 times in the first 10 minutes. It was ridiculous! My son said he’s help me edit but I told him I don’t think anything would be left! Anyway I think it would be better if I set up the pots on my dining room table and did the video from there but then you aren’t capturing the real surprise of when you see a piece for the first time! So who know. I wouldn’t even know how to post it. But… I did finally create an Instagram for myself it’s madaboutmudpottery So go take a look. You can also tell in there that I’m clueless as to jot that works as well. I always say it’s like Chanukah every time you open the kiln. Because it soo is and I say it’s even better because we get to do it so often! Not during the winter though! The damn weather just sucks! Lol.
