OMG! I was there in the front row on my 13th birthday. Apparently I was on TV at one point just need to watch the whole match. Boris was and will always be my idol, I spent the whole summer trying to emulate his serve and diving around concrete courts!

How nice is this to see it here!! I was sitting on the court on the right side on the first day of this match. After Boris victory in Queen I told the father of the family where I lived that time, that Boris will win Wimbledon. Believe me, he thouhgt I was completly crazy because he didn´t know him. It´s a pity that I was to young to bet ;-) but it was a wonderful experience in 1985!!

The reason why Becker played 10 years later another Wimbledon final is due to the development of his game. Incredible to see, specially in comparison to his start in 1985.

So nice to see this, I hope Järryd-Becker in the semis will be available as well. Jarryd had the upperhand until the rainbreak, then Becker was better.

I enjoyed this on several levels: great o see the old court number 1 , not conventionally beautiful but full of character and intimate with a more relaxed atmosphere than centre court and a very knowledgeable crowd including many players , Fascinating to see Tiriac, Okker and Wilander and others watching together on the second day. Nystroms superb backhand especially on return , his all round game so solid , no obvious weaknesses . Boris in his glory , so strong and powerful. The superb commentary , Andrew castle should watch this and learn from it , I can identify Barry Davies , usually a football commentator but here showing his deep understanding of tennis , John Barrett and I’m not sure of the third . The tennis clothing still of good taste pre the excesses of the late 80’s and also white tennis balls , this must be one of the last years they were used . All in all a joy

I think in this case the commentator was wrong. He said that we will hear great things from Nystrom. But that was not the case. I was very interested in tennis at that time (and still I am) but I never heard anything from Nystrom after this tournament. But from Boris Becker (who came from Leimen not far from the village where I lived in Germany) I heard many many things. Mostly I remember the many many victories he had in his tennis games over the many years that passed but from Nystrom? Never heard again from him. But from another man from sweden I heard also many news. Stefan Edberg was not as good as Boris Becker in tennis but he was a very good player in those years.
@jdmresearch Жыл бұрын
Nystrom won Monte Carlo and Madrid the following year. Also, with Mats Wilander, he won Wimbledon in doubles. Not bad.
@thadtuiol17173 жыл бұрын
Nystrom had some seriously good shots, especially his double-handed backhand. Why didn't he have a bigger career?
@phadley78tube Жыл бұрын
Good question. I remember seeing Nystrom play at Wimbledon the following year. Being there is much different than watching on TV but I had big expectations of him based on the 1985 performance against Becker. However, watching him play in the third round against Ramesh Krishan (very elegant player) I was quite disappointed and surprised. During the backcourt rallies he appeared to be hitting the ball as if it was a practice session with no real purpose or power, just back n forth. Maybe it was just my viewing angle, perhaps, and Krishan is a very fine player who I saw humble former Wimbledon finalist Chris Lewis on court nbr 2 back in 1984. Anyway, I agree with your question and am surprised he didn't have a bigger career too.

@ppm120667 and he was a little bit unlucky. He often was so close to winning a clay court tournament. Who knows, if he had won the 5th vs Ederberg in Paris 89, he might have even won the whole tournament. He usually hadnt much problems beating Chang. (H2H 5:1 Becker)
