Wimbledon 1985 - A German tennis fairy tale

It is July 7, 1985 when Germany gathers in front of the television. Boris Becker, 17-year-old Leimener, is in the Wimbledon final. As the youngest player of all time, as the first seedless. Until then, no German could have won the most important and most traditional tennis tournament in the world. Two weeks, seven games in which Becker wrote sports history.
Michael Mask and Boris Poscharsky bring the sensation to life again in a 60-minute documentary.
"I was born a second time on July 7, 1985, as the well-known Boris Becker," says Germany's best tennis player of all time right at the beginning of the film. It was a tough road to the transformed match ball in the final against Kevin Curren. Again and again Becker was on the verge of being out. A drama in seven acts and all seven opponents have their say.
In addition to Boris Becker's then coach and important confidant Günther Bosch, contemporary witnesses such as the then reporters Hans-Jürgen Pohmann and Rainer Deike as well as Andreas Maurer Becker describe the path from a talented tennis child to first successes, the victory in the dress rehearsal in Queens and the triumph as radiant Winner on the sacred lawn of Wimbledon.

man muss sagen., dass es (aus heutiger Sicht) schon unglaublich war, dass Becker und Graf quasi parallel den Sport in Deutschland geprägt haben und ein Vermächtnis hinterlassen haben. Becker hat immerhin 6 Slams geholt, Zverev noch keines.

Man kann sich heute gar nicht mehr vorstellen wie Tennis damals Dank Becker und Graf durch die Decke schoß. Auf einmal war Tennis für die Privaten interessant,Einschaltquoten so hoch wie beim Fußball

Ich hatte keine Ahnung vom Tennis, im Freizeithem Lehe in Bremerhaven saßen alle vor diesem kleinen Schwarz/Weiß Fernseher, einer der Erzieher dort erklärte das Spiel während rund 40 Leute in diesem kleinen überhitzten Raum auf dem Boden saßen und Boris Becker zusahen. Es war spannend und wir alle sagten und dachten, wenn der so gut kämpft, am verlieren ist, nicht aufgibt und am Ende gewinnt ... dann können wir das auch. Wimbeldon 85 hat bei mir und meinen Kumpels viel bewegt. Wir wurden alle Becker-Fans und erklommen das letzte Berufsschuljahr das einen Monat später begann mit einer nicht vorher gefühlten Leichtigkeit. Becker hat für den Sport und die Jugend viel bewegt. Mehr als ihm vielleicht bewusst ist.

TV commentators Hans-Jürgen Pohmann (a pro tennis player himself in the 1970's) and his colleagues introduced a broad German audience to the magnitude of Becker, Graf, Huber and Stich. When the sport did not have a strong footprint in Germany but was present in the posh Tennis and Hockey clubs and a handful of company-owned playgrounds only it was their passion and comprehensive explanation of rules and sporting spirit that made 'the white sport' a mass phenomenon for nearly 15 years from 1985 on. The battle of Hartford, CT with McEnroe, Graf's Golden Slam, the 1992 medals and the Grand Slam victories of Graf and Becker especially, all became common property. German Tennis never recovered from the retirement of these four. In my eyes, this 'education' in dedication and love for the sport that was represented by Graf and Becker is a major reason that Zverev does not get any sympathy in Germany.

Becker and Stich (and to some extent also Graf) were interesting tennis players, with complete games and lots of variety. Zverev is not.

Anders Jarryd… was für ein sympathischer Mensch. Einer der besten Doppelspieler aller Zeiten. Leider interessiert sich heute niemand mehr fürs Doppel. Früher hatte das Doppel immer noch eine große Bedeutung im Daviscup. Aber der Daviscup selbst ist unwichtig geworden. 😔😔😔
