The bishop was keeping the king out of all the dark squares and it was also covering the queening square in a8. Notice how a few moves later, Fischer advanced that pawn to a7 but was unable to promote it due to the bishop. A piece's worth is based value plus it's strength in the position. It was worth amore than a rook

Interesting comment. I recall how big of a deal this tournament was when it was first played( it was a BIG DEAL.). Being the KZbin junkie that I am, I've watched 3 versions of this game tonight. I actually saw 1 place where I believe bs had opportunity for checkmate and made the wrong move. That ended up being where bf was able to turn the game.
