Stripper clarification, because I can lol: Some clubs have spinning poles, some don't. You will get calluses and bruises (and yes, sometimes friction burn) regardless of which type of pole you're using at first, but with practice and frequent pole work your body will toughen up and get used to having pressure and weight in all those unusual places and then it doesn't really hurt. Spinning poles are also definitely not easy-mode. They make spins easier (...duh, lol), but they make pretty much everything else harder because you're grabbing onto an object that moves in your hand (or whatever body part you're trying to hold on with). If you ever did the monkey bars on the playground as a kid and hit one bar that's loose and would turn in your hand when you grabbed onto it, that's what it's like. It's easier to learn a trick on a static pole and then, once you get it down, practice it on a spinning one.

And so the Maria ending really is HER ending. But fate is cruel, as she starts coughing near the car. I took this to mean she is bound to the town just as much as she is him. So she needs him to stay there, but they leave in a car. Chances are she dies anyways, the moment you leave town.

That's actually in line with something from Silent Hill 3: when Heather first encounter the Closer in the mall, you can find it munching on a bloodied corpse. Later it's confirmed that the corpse is reused Angela's model. It might be just technical necessity from devs to save up time, but your theory put a sinister twist on it. Silent Hill swallowing people to their doom regardless of their innocence and then spitting them out later to fuck with newcomers that wander inside... it's pretty harrowing to think about
@joshuareesor17562 жыл бұрын
Silent Hill 3 actually talks about that idea in an optional occult magazine. It reads ""The souls of those who died suddenly by suicide or accident don't realize they're dead. Sometimes they stay put and haunt that particular place. These spirits have lost their human senses and memories and can only keep replaying the pain and sadness of the moment they died. The pain can get so bad that they turn to humans for salvation -- or they begrudge humans their lives. At such times they can possess humans."

I remember years ago that there was a kind of interesting but horrifying theory going around that proposed Maria could have been a real person that the town essentially copy pasted elements of Mary's personality and even a bit of her looks onto for James' punishment. The idea is that she might have been someone who worked at Heaven's Night, probably as a prostitute, and for unknown reasons had suicidal thoughts (which would in a twisted way, put her in a similar headspace to James.) as well as some sort of separation anxiety, maybe related to the former, and in that vulnerable state the town snatched her (some even posited that she was either attempting to shoot herself, succeeded in doing so and is a ghost, or was partially successful, prior to the start of Born from a Wish.) and "rewrote" her into James' temptation while simultaneously having Maria enter her own purgatory situation of dying over and over, as well as chasing after someone's attention and affection. Essentially, their purgatorial scenerios coincide with eachother. Going along with this theory, the Born from a Wish scenerio is the remants of Maria's former life and emotions conflicting with the town's alterations to her physical and mental being, and her eventual coming to terms with the "role" given to her to play out. It's sort of similar to Lisa Garland's situation in SH1, where she was either one of the nightmare nurses with Lisa copy pasted onto it in a sense or the town/Alessa generated her altogether as a wandering vengeful ghost, though either way she was a real person at one time. I do think it's a neat, if messed up idea.

For me this works on similar rules as Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris. Maria is a real, physical being created by something of intense supernatural power that can essentially telepathically probe James' mind, subconscious, etc. Kelvin's wives that are created by Solaris are real people - fully formed - who are capable of independent thought, etc. They might work on different physiological rules than normal humans and they may have severely shortened lifespans (as in Solaris and the Maria ending of SH2). Beyond those basics I'm cool with the "mechanics" of Silent Hill being a total mystery. But for this game specifically that's how I understand it.

I think this is clearer if Woolie gets the idea out of his head of figments of imagination. It manifested something from his desires. A living, breathing person, who has their own goals, but no real memories (except for those snippets of Mary). Even though if you leave with Maria, she will die soon after as implied by t he cough and medications, but that doesn't mean something born there can't go on to have a perfectly fine life. The child of Silent Hill 1, as we all know, is technically a manifestation of the place. She grew up to have a fine life until the cult ruined it, though it is implied that shit was starting to stir up around her for just existing. Anyway, back to topic. Everything in Silent Hill is real. It is tangible, made of meat, flesh, and if need be: barbed wire, metal, and rust. Perceptions of these things may vary from person to person depending on your viewpoint of the town. Not everything born from Silent Hill is inherently evil, just most things. There's also the multiple Silent Hills: The actual town which is never really stated if it's inhabited anymore or functions beyond cult shit. The otherworld Silent Hill, which is the foggy, typically dangerous place with broken roads and weird shit. Then finally we have Silent Hell which is when the sirens go off and shit gets rusty or dingy.

My interpretation of who or what is Maria is that she was a real person - a stripper working at Heaven's Night, who was in a very bad place mentally. Since she "awakens" in an armchair with a gun with one bullet, even though she has more right over there, i interpreted it as the past-Maria was going to kill herself and at that moment, right before she fired the gun the powers that be in Silent Hill took her and started to mold her into "Maria" a vision that would be part of James' purgatory. And it was able to take a whole-ass person and make her an NPC in someone's journey not just because that person had some fitting criteria, like being professionally sultry but also lonely and afraid of being left alone, but most importantly because that person gave up - she fully commited to giving up her life, only insdead of death the Silent Hill took it for its own needs.

I see people sometimes criticizing this scenario for “revealing too much” about Maria and for ruining the idea that she’s simply a monster created by the town and not actually her own person. However, I personally like it precisely because of this reason. In my mind, Silent Hill is far from “therapy town” - it’s a fucked up place dominated by actively evil spiritual energies. The fact that a full-fledged person could be used as a mere puppet simply for the sake of tormenting someone else is horrifying if you think about it, and therefore exactly on-brand for the town. Plus I think that both Maria and Ernest are genuinely well-written characters and it’s very easy to empathize with them.

This scenario is, I reckon, pretty clear in establishing that she is a physical being who was created by the town to fulfill James’ wish to see his wife alive again - in a twisted way, of course. Even in the first game, the monsters and otherworld stemmed from Alessa's fears and trauma, so Silent Hill has always had influence from people's psyche. The main differing factor is how much each game focuses on either the psychology or the occult aspects, but there's always a combination of the two (at least from 1-4). The way I see it is how Masahiro Ito described designing the Closer for SH3. It's very similar to the Mandarin from SH2 but altered to fit Heather. He partially did this to showcase that Silent Hill has input on how the monsters are "designed" in-universe, creating the base that changes details depending on the person. The monsters are a combination of a person's perception and the powers behind Silent Hill; there's always devil shit at the core of Silent Hill, but that core is then altered by an individual's trauma and pain.

@@PR--un4ub I know; that's why I said each game has different levels of how much it focuses on the psychological and occult aspects of the series. Still, Alessa and her trauma influence all the monsters and environments of the first game, so to say the series changed into one about fighting monsters from a person's psyche would be incorrect. Even the god (called Incubus or Dream Demon) that the game is centred around birthing is influenced by this idea, as the Book of Lost Memoires states that it is an "Incarnation of the mental image of God that Dahlia had." SH1's symbolism is pretty straightforward and less pronounced than the later games, but just because it's not as central doesn't make it an aspect to discard when thinking about the game.

I gotta say, really don't like born from a wish. It kinda undermines the base game. Its also irritating from a gameplay perspective. I was kinda hoping you'd skip it.

Neither do i... Maria is an illusion but this DLC turns her into a real person then why the fuck does she never appear in the base game for the other characters... it just sucks and fucks with the base game god damnit Konami

The existing character model of Maria was a good base to make a full playable character. That’s it. That’s the only reason.

@@touchingisjustthefirststep Maria only interact with a voice behind a door and James, nowhere it says she’s a “real” person, for all we know she manifested right before waking up.

I don’t really know where people get this idea that everything the SH characters experience must simply be a figment of their imagination. Sure, the games fuck with this idea a lot, but it’s never officially confirmed anywhere - the beauty of it is that it’s supposed to be ambiguous. Also, James and Harry could get hurt and die fighting the monsters along their journeys. How could that be possible, if everything is just happening in their minds the whole time? So I dunno, I never really had much of a problem with Maria being an actual, physical being. The fact that she’s “real” isn’t in conflict with the interpretation that she’s a creation of the town - after all, Silent Hill is very capable of creating real, physical monsters that can hurt you. And if it can create monsters, why not full-fledged persons? That’s what the title of this scenario implies - Maria was “born from a wish”. It’s fascinating to me, because it implies that she exists in a sort of “limbo” - a real person in the sense that she has her own consciousness and humanity, but at the same time a mere puppet created ad-hoc to serve a purpose in someone else’s story. I don’t know, I just find it much more interesting than the simple idea that “she never existed at all, James only imagined her because he’s delusional”.
