This is a great cover. but from your description, I can tell you misunderstood the song.

That’s the cause of much of the misunderstanding of this song. It’s the juxtaposition of the struggle and alienation depicted in the lyrics with the nationalistic pride in the chorus. Was this meant to be a pure nationalistic anthem? No. Was it meant to be purely critical of American society at the time? No. It’s both. I’ve always interpreted it as saying that you can both have pride in your nation while acknowledging it’s shortcomings.
