We are proud to honor Born this Way as our Media Award winner. Born This Way representatives from California were unable to make it to our Annual Conference, but we’re happy to share their video acceptance speech.
A little television show has not only entertained millions around the world but has also made people think about Down syndrome differently. For two years, we have followed a group of seven young adults, who happened to born with Down syndrome, as they pursue their passions and lifelong dreams, explore friendships, romantic relationships and work, all while defying society’s expectations.
Of course, we're talking about the cast of Born This Way, the A&E reality show that has truly broken new ground in its representation of people with Down syndrome in the mass media.
As Born This Way enters its 3rd season, it has garnered both critical and audience acclaim, even capturing a 2016 Emmy Award for Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program. Before its release, there was some skepticism in our community about whether a reality show format could possibly present an accurate and positive portrayal of our community. Those concerns were quickly laid to rest when it became clear that the production company, Bunim/Murrray Productions and A&E were committed to treating each of the main characters as a unique individual with a compelling and complex personality.
As the show has progressed, Born This Way has continued to develop each of the characters - Rachel, Sean, John, Steven, Cristina, Megan and Elena - exploring their own dreams, ambitions and challenges as they move through life. We learn that they have high hopes just like everyone. The series also gives voice to the parents, allowing them to talk about the joys of having a son or daughter with Down syndrome and the challenges they face in helping them live as independently as possible.
Over the years, the list of substantive roles for actors with Down syndrome has been painfully short - Life Goes On, Glee, American Horror Show. Now, Born This Way has blown the door open in the realm of reality TV programming, displaying a positive, yet complex message of empowerment and individuality.
Congratulations to the cast of Born This Way and everyone involved in its production and distribution.
