Very nice work. The next time you install electrical components, you may want to review how you determined cable and lug sizing.

Great video. Loving this series. It goes to show how valuable it is to be able to refresh a solid older boat. Especially since new boats are so expensive.

I have a couple questions because I’m going through this now One, could you have just use one battery for starting and for the house? It appears like you left the former lead acid for the house, is that correct? What is the wrap you used around the wires in the back that looks like pretty nice stuff.
@BornAgainBoatingАй бұрын
The wrap is this: amzn.to/3B3oQuB We used 1 battery for the house and the starting battery as well and removed the lead acid

Great video man. I converted my 16' tiller boat to full lithium and I dropped 87 pounds out of the boat, and I can definitely tell the difference. It's also nice being able to run ALL day and not having to worry about it, especially in some of these electric only lakes up here in NJ.

Not sure if you did or not, but making the battery cables long enough to pull the battery out and disconnect would be a nice feature. It would make it easier in the future to replace the battery, or to pull it out and troubleshoot other issues or add new items to the console.

Can run gels or lithium ions under the floor of the cab, more wire involved but about 90% less corrosion related issues. (Not leads because they offgas)

The thing is with replacing lead acid batteries with lithium is that you can’t charge them below freezing. So if you’re in the north east like I am essentially you’ve disabled your boat with the inability to charge the battery - do you want to start the motor that’ll be fine, but then the charging starts and unless the battery protects itself, it will damage the battery. And at what point does it get warm enough to finally start charging? Not everything new is appropriate all the time for everyone.

Per ABYC Soldering connections is prohibited except a Soldered connection that joins a battery terminal connector can be used if the solder is 1.5x the diameter of the stranded portion. The reason soldering is not acceptable is that it turns stranded wire into solid and will eventually cause strand breakage which reduces the capacity of the stranded conductor.

Do you have any input on only using flooded lead acid on a ‘01 merc 90 hp? From what I’ve been told I shouldn’t use anything else, not even AGM, never dual or deep cycle, etc due to the charging system with stator and voltage regulator

Most insurance companies will not cover you if your lithium ion batteries are not ABYC certified and some require the installation to be made by an ABYC certified installer

Dumb question but I figured I'll ask anyways to get some opinions. Currently working with a 18ft cape horn, want to reroute the batteries for better weight distribution. We have a center console with a flip up lid and 36 gallon tank mounted underneath. There is room around the tank itself to mount batteries and it is well ventilated. I know possible sparks near a fuel source isn't a great idea but I don't think if mounted properly it shouldn't be an issue. Any thoughts?
@BornAgainBoatingАй бұрын
There are a lot of boats that have the fuel tanks and the batteries in the same compartments, but yes, you need to make sure there aren't any leaks on the tank and that you can get proper ventilation in that area, which there should be already if the tank is in there already, not sure if that was factory from Cape Horn, I've not seen any of their smaller boats, just the bigger ones and I like them, but the tank should be vented to the outside of the hull as well. But quite a few flats boats, bass boats, bay boats, and other boats do have the fuel tank and the batteries in the same compartment, though most try and build some boxes or something to separate them, you could put something between them or kind of closing off that fuel tank into it's own area :/
@kelevra002bАй бұрын
@BornAgainBoating it does have a vent hose running to the port side of the center console to atmosphere. I've been looking at most likely relocating the trolling motor batteries to the forward compartments and then the house/cranking to the center console. Definitely going to be a winter project lol already rewired the WHOLE boat over the summer. Never again

I’m thinking of rewiring my boat and adding a new battery set up. Thank you very much. Your videos have been extremely helpful. Thanks again for creating this great content. I looked on the website for the battery you bought for the starter and it states that NOT COMPATIBLE FOR OUTBOARDS WITH A STATOR. I’m not sure why it says that. Just make sure this will not fry your alternator.

The Epoch batteries are great batteries the free replacement warranty is 3 years. A $200 group 24-27 AGM deep cycle battery for that small 90HP engine would had made more sense and would last a good 5 years and you don't have to worry about the BMS disconnecting for whatever reason and frying the rectifier, most older outboard engines charging systems are engineered for use with lead acid batteries, not lithium.
@acme95385 ай бұрын
Yeah . . . even my new Yamaha F70 4-stroke can have issues with lithiums just as you say, so I passed . . . . IMO they're great for trolling motors, but it's a lot more complex when you are using them as a starting/ house battery.
@warren61725 ай бұрын
They have to be real close to making them safe to charge. I’ve had a lithium battery in my motorcycle for years and no problems. And it cost the same as a replacement lead acid.
@AVMAR4 ай бұрын
@@warren6172 LiFePO4 batteries when left fully charge for a long period of time tend to lose some of their capacity they also need proper maintenance charge/discharge cycles and most people won't do it correctly specially when used as a dedicated starting battery.
@fishhuntadventure3 ай бұрын
Some truth there, but a couple things are not necessarily so. A lithium battery designed as a drop in replacement for a deep cycle lead acid is gonna work fine with a traditional charging system.

I love the people that think they will end up dead in the water using lithium. I switched over to full lithium last season and the only way you will have an issue is if something were to go catastrophically wrong with your electrical system. You have to make sure your connections are solid and you'll never have an issue. I love them. I lost almost 80lbs of weight between both and my run time when fishing at night is ridiculous. I really wouldn't recommend using lithium on older motors.
@kerrytodd37535 ай бұрын
Hmmmm, the main reason you moved it was because of the water……water and lithium doesn’t like to play together.
