I worked fighter jets for 24 years and retired about 18 years ago. Just bought my first boat (1994 Model). No Wings! It has a Yamaha 150 Saltwater series engine on a 24 ft Hurricane Deck boat. I sit and look at it and have no idea what to do as far as engine maintenance! We did take it out over a 5 day period, ran it for a few hours and it seems to run great. But after watching some of your videos I think I need to learn more. Much more!

Hi, thank you for your service Sir. Yeah I'm in the same situation with my first boat. I've actually bought an older boat and have had to do some work myself. I've watched a ton of videos and this guy is my go to for restoration and mechanical knowledge also he covers a lot of peripheral subjects to boating. Boat works is another great channel for fiberglass work and painting. You are a lot smarter than me so you will be great at whatever you choose to do. Closest I ever got to a fighter plane was my street bike an FJ1100. I swear if I had wings I could have taken flight😂. Take care.

I have the same twin counter rotating 200 hpdi engines since new, 2006, on a 92 Grady Sailfish. Run great never had an issue. You didn’t do the filter in the VST tank, every year I do that one, the metal can filter you did in the video, I do every 2nd year. Just did the pump belt, but the old ones were fine. Also, the O2 sensor and its housing needs to be cleaned but I go several years before doing them. Plugs change every second year. Trim seals done this year. Lower unit fluid condition check every year, change it 2nd year.

I had a 150 2 stroke Yami on my Whaler in Key Largo. An excellent motor. Just remove the boat mounted oil tank once a year, drain the oil, discard the sludge on the bottom, reverse spray the oil filter with WD40 (replacement isn’t necessary), flush the oil lines too. Reinstall and fill up. If you clean out the engine mounted oil tank, always replace the foam washer. When the engine gets old, remove the oil system completely and mix the oil in the gas. The oil system is the Yami’s Achilles heel.

Nothing beats the sound and smell of my Mercury V6 135 from 1992! Its been running in fresh water until 4 years ago and I will use it until we die together. Todays engines are to complicated with to many sensors and they scare me a lot. My V6 is of course burning more gas than the new ones, but I can do all service myself and that saves me a lot of money. I also belive these old engines have a longer lifespan, If they are not being run to death and are well maintained.

Thanks foIr your content. It's always great! I have a 1986 Johnson 115 on a restored 1964 Cruisers Inc. 17 foot wooden lapstrake boat. I've had very little trouble with it. I did remove the oil injection system at my local shops suggestion, and it has eliminated a big source of worry. I just acquired a Mercury 115 straight 6 from the same era. I hope to put it on another restored boat this summer.

2002 carbureted Mercury Saltwater 150 2 stroke. Runs great and easy to maintain. As my son calls it, a “reliable 2 smoke.” Just did a service on it. Compression was perfect, ran my borescope in it and everything looked clean. Surprised considering Im in South Florida salt conditions. Regular maintenance and flushes are a must down here.

Good stuff once again! I noticed these last few weeks that more and more two strokes are comming in again, in total 5.mostly smaller including an old mercury 7.5 HP and I was surprised that mercury still carried all the parts I needed for it. I usually try to place a small bucket or canister below the fuel water filters so I don't spill fuel everywhere. See you next week stay healthy.

1993 225 johnson ocean runner on a 1989 22' revenge (whaler). rebuilt once by me in 2007. previous owner didn't change the high pressure water pump, ran it high and hot. I fattened up the mid and high speed orifices for break-in, but it ran so well i just left it like that. 35 mile offshore trips at 3/4 throttle without a single issue. thanks OMC!

Aaron I always carry a spare fuel water separator filter onboard. I had to do a swap out on my Mercruiser the other day while I was heading out fishing. I was 8 miles from where I had launched and was not making much headway on my 10 hp trolling motor, glad thing I had a spare filter onboard!!

Ohh yeah I love a two smoke!!! I have two 1997 Johnson ocean runners. They are hungry for fuel and oil!! But knock on wood very reliable!! Water pumps, thermostats, filters and plugs. When I bought my boat it had the original 89 Johnson’s 225s on her. 1485 hours never been rebuilt original lowers and power heads. I figured I was on borrowed time.I repowered with the 97 225’s from a guy in south jersey who had a hydra sport and was going to E-tech’s. Only 400hrs on them great compression No water in the lowers. Decals in great shape definitely taken care of. They push my Grady Marlin nicely 26kts when I keep them around 4400 they are decent on fuel anything more then a few hundred rpm either way and you see the fuel gauge move almost before your eyes!!! Would love some 4 strokers but these are so light and powerful!! Throws the boat on plane!!

Sold my Lund Tyee last fall with an '87 Evinrude 90...had to replace the wiring harness due to age, but still running strong according to the new owner. Now have an '06 Yamaha 50 and will use what I've learned here to keep it going as long as my old Evinrude.

im running a mercury 80hp 1982 that was in the swedish military storage, so barley any hours on it. Did a full service on it recently. Rebuild the carbs with gaskets, needle and seat. New sparkplugs, new impeller, new gearlube, greased all fittings and propshaft. it runs really good and i think they tuned it a bit when they built it and it feels also.

When you trim it up to check/add oil, LOCK IT OUT. Also make sure you replace spark plugs with the correct plugs, they are not always the same as what you take out! Call NGK or who ever, give 'em the motor specs, and be sure you get the correct ones!

Have an 88' Merc 175 black max. Original engine on my Sea Ray Laguna. Bought the boat 2 years ago and been going over every part of the motor and changing parts and got rid of all the black boxes on it. Runs better than ever and it has solid compression numbers around 130 all cylinders. Was thinking to repower with a Suzuki but this motor wants to live for a while. Now that I know how to do all the services on it probably will keep it for a while. Great channel keep up the good work.

I have like Robert P a '92 Grady White Sailfish boat with twin 2006 200HP HPDI's that run amazing. I service as needed, new plugs each year, lower unit service with Amsoil gear lube. Only issues I have is the idle speed when cold is too low, about 400 rpms until warmup and some restarts to get it going. Long story short, is caused by the carbon buildup in the O2 sensor chamber. So now doing annual O2 sensor removal, cleaning out carbon and ensuring the pin will move freely and chamber is clean. Then I do a decarb with Seafoam and they startup like new again. Not sure why the excessive carbon, but many others having same issue. Using either regular fuel or ethanol with Startron and Ringfree plus, still same issue. Tried different outboard 2 stroke oils, Pennzoil Semi Synthetic, now running Amsoil Full synthetic, same issue. Do love how these engines run though!

Running a 2001 Yami 150 saltwater series hdpi. Runs great, always has. Serviced filters and plugs and water pump. Use Yamaha ring conditioner in every tank. Use stable in every tank unless non-ethanol. Did not know about filter on bottom of oil tank will change next week. Have been very careful to keep that unit clean.

Your videos have REALLY helped me. I have a 2005 200HP Yamaha which is almost identical to the ones in your videos. I have a bogging issue and then the engine won't start. Feels like fuel for sure so I have ordered the 2 low pressure fuel pumps to replace and will remove and clean the VST as well as check the fuel pump inside of the VST. All of this is covered in your videos and I can't thank you enough. Now, instead of being intimidated or paying a mechanic way more than I need to, I can do some basic maintenance and see where this leads me. Fingers crossed!

I cant believe as good as you are and I truly mean that. That you are showing prefilling the fuel filter by filling the discharge hole. Any dirt going into the discharge hole can go further towards the motor. Put a plug into the discharge hole and fill through the small holes. Just a thought.

1980 or 86 mercury 115. Been underwater but still runs well. Only problem is getting it started. Needs a spray of brake cleaner other wise it takes a lot of turning over to start. The starter gear keeps disengaging just when it's about to start. Once it's warmed up it starts first turn.
