My yamaha outboard bogs out and will not accelerate. I checked the vst filter and look really clean. All filters are clean. O2 sensor clean. Could this be a fuel pump issue? It will fire right up and idle for hours. Its just when I try to accelerate

I have a 2001 Yamaha 200 HPDI and I thought you had to change that barrel filter every year or you risk clogging that screen in the VST. Sounds like you are saying that’s overkill.
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 жыл бұрын
Not the barrel filter on top of the VST, that filter doesn't need changed but every few years or couple hundred hours. You do want to change your regular fuel filter that goes in the plastic cup every year though. But the $100 barrel filter on the top, you'll be fine letting that one go a little longer! Thank you for commenting :)

Do you actually hear or feel the pump running? I think my VFT fuel pump is jammed but I don't know what the pump is supposed to sound like or behave when it is working. I did exactly what you did switching wires back and forth and I only hear a clicking noise. I found so much sand like substance throughout the VFT and both fuel pumps but not in the fuel filters. I'm assuming it is an aluminum oxide corrosion. I also found water throughout the fuel system.

I cant believe you would not bead blast the vst tank.I would fire one of my guys for putting that nasty thing back together without it being spotless. As far as the pump goes there's no way its going to last after being locked up. Tried it a few times to help a costumer out and they ALL came back. I"ll do everything i can to help my costumers out and save them money but not there. I dont want them going offshore and the junk pump die. Ive been working on Yamaha's since 1985 in my own shop. I'm really guilty of just replacing parts on vehicles. At my age and weight it's just a pain. but when it comes to my boat, it's easier, cheaper, and sometimes even fun to do all the work. The engine's are at chest level and everything is easy to get to.

The fuel pump can be bought for around 30 to 50 dollars. There is nothing special about these pumps they have a lot of other uses in automobiles etc. Simply because it is on a marine engine is why it cost so much. I replaced the one on my 2002 Mercury outboard 115 HP 4 stroke EFI and I bought it on line. Simply get the original mfg part number and do a search on Google. You will find what you need if you just look.

It is becoming clear to me that fuel related issues are a major problem with outboards. In fact I think you did a video on recurring issues you see regularly and that turned out to be your #1 issue. I am assuming that this 300hp beast spent its previous life hooked up to and drinking out of a fuel/water separator filter. If that is the case, tell me nobody is running unfiltered fuel to an outboard this big and expensive, how did all that debris make its way inside the vapor separator and the various screens and components in the first place? Was the engine pickled in ethanol laden gasoline and simply abandoned to wick moisture of out that south Florida moist marine air, phase separate over time and left to deteriorate? How did it get so bad?

I like most of this stuff but come on....the pump should never have been "freed up" and put back on. It may be epensive but it's going on an expensive motor on an expensive boat and expensive toys cost money. Replacing the pump after it's been so mistreated and jammed would seem to be industry standard to me. I certainly wouldn't want my name on that "repair" unless it was ONLY to see if the engine could be made to run before putting money into a new pump..

Once it fired up, I changed all the filters, changed the thermostats, removed and cleaned the injectors, cleaned the HO2S, changed the water pump. I also flushed the cooling system with vinegar to get all the scale out. I still have a couple of issues on the boat, but it's coming along. I also installed a water temperature gauge on the dash. I didn't use the Yamaha gauges due to them being faded and I had already installed new analog gauges before I changed the motor.

@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 жыл бұрын
That's odd. 70 is a lot! I could only think of an issue with your pressure regulator or possibly your pressure gauge ;) Most of the time the pressure regulator causes a loss of fuel pressure, but I guess it is a possibility that it could raise the pressure too! Other than that maybe a gasket not seated properly on the output side of the high pressure pump?
@JonnyUFO
@JonnyUFO 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply! I thought of the pressure regulator too, but it seemed fine when I had to change the high pressure fuel pump out. The pressure gauge is brand new and was pretty spendy, so I wouldn't think it to be that. I just bought it last week to test out the VST. I was having issues with the motor restarting when hot and couldn't hear the fuel pump kick in after that either. That's why I bought a new pump. This is really stumping me!! I haven't ran it long enough to see if the restarting issue has gone away. I'm afraid of the pressure being that high though. Do I run a risk of ruining anything if it's that high?
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 жыл бұрын
No worries! Ok, so the gauge is good. You don't really run too big of a risk, because if the fuel pressure is that high, the engine should run pretty terribly and have some issues. The pressure regulator is the only thing I can think of off the top of my head. How much are they?

The ones that I have seen online are around $30. That is around the same price as the fuel pump I bought. The only problem is it's a lot harder to find the right make and model pressure regulator for my motor unlike the pump, that was easy to find. The mystery deepens however. I took the boat out around the lake yesterday for about an hour or so, and it seemed ok. It didn't run rough or have problems accelerating or anything. It was still reading 70psi though! How is this possible? I tried letting it sit for about 25 minutes after running to see if I could get it to do that cranking with no fire issue like the first problem I had, but it started right up again. I don't think I let it sit long enough though, because before it seemed I'd have to wait at least an hour or so of not running it to get it to do the cranking with no fire. I'm going to try again today and see how it goes waiting at least an hour this time. I did notice though with the cowling off, I could hear a slight almost like a pulsating hissing noise that went with the sound of the motor coming from the opposite side that the VST is on. It also got louder when accelerating. I'm not sure if that is normal or not? My thought was maybe it was pressure being released somewhere from having such high fuel pressure in the VST. It's really strange, and I'm really confused...

Hmm that is interesting, if you want to email me your serial number I could look up the pressure regulator and get you the correct part number. The serial number will be on the starboard side of the engine bracket and will begin with 1 number then it will have a letter and then 6 more numbers, it will look something like this: 1C123456. Not sure what else to say on the pressure side of things. That hissing sound is most likely the idle air controller, that's a normal sound. Hopefully you have fixed it and are now over thinking it :) let me know how it goes!

Most likely the gasket around the high pressure pump is broken or cracked or whatever and is pressurizing the VST which is pushing fuel out in weird spots :/ If you get stumped, you can look into joining our Boater's Program where we have messaging and a place to upload pictures and videos so we could talk about the issue and give our recommendations during a weekly livestream: boaters.bornagainboating.com/signup/ Hopefully you've figured it out by now and are back on the water though :) best of luck!

I've got a pontoon boat with a Suzuki DF115 that I'm about to attempt a similar VST service on. Is there a way I can attach an ignition switch at the motor so I'm not having to climb up and down off the pontoon boat every time I want to turn on the ignition?

Great video. In this process. I have a 2002 sx200, my float didnt have a spring, thought maybe I lost it in disassembly. I checked manual and doesnt apear to have one....I hope not...will know tomorrow...side note, my pump was as nasty if not more.....tried your method of getting it free...soaked it for 24 hours in carb fuel cleaner.... reversed polarity back and forth.....nothing....feel it move but just am intial click. I ordered a new one. After new one comes 5 days later and old one laying on the bench, I had to give it another shot, I put the leads on it and boom freed and moving.....really! Sigh, guess I have extra pump now....

I think it's worth mentioning how to free up the canister filter from the "Chinese finger torture" clamp (not the Oetiker, the reusable end) as most people haven't seen that and will likely damage it before they figure it out on their own. Do you like to use needle-nose or a trim panel tool or what?

Frist, let me say how much I enjoyed your three part series of waking up this engine. That said, I have a 115 yamaha that has been setting up for about 5 years in storage. I'm 74 years young. May I ask what would it cost me to have someone do what you just did with this engine? Dose not have to be exact but in the ball park would be great.
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 4 жыл бұрын
Well that depends on how the engine was put away, and the hourly rate. If it needs work like what was done here estimate about 8 hours of labor, but if it was put away fogged, the. It could be a matter of 2-4 hours and some spark plugs and fuel filters!

@@BornAgainBoating hi. I cleaned my vst but when I put it back together and started her up, I noticed gas leaking from the top outside of the vst where the wire lead terminals are hooked up? @BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Henry, thank you! If you don't have any running issues and the engine is running properly. You don't need to clean it out. Usually the only reason you will need to go into the VST is if you get a batch of bad gas and suck up a bunch of stuff, or the engine has sat for a few years and has gummed up. Besides that you should be good to go without messing with it :)

If you store the boat, say if you’re in a climate that sees four seasons (I’m from Ohio), part of the winterization process is draining the VST AFTER you’ve ran stabilized fuel through the engine for a period of about ten minutes, and after fogging has been completed.

Mercury 50 hp marine engine fuel is not coming to the spark plugs. I am thinking. injectors are solid. ecu is solid. When you add a few drops of gasoline into the cylinders, the engine starts and then stops. Cylinder pressure is very good. When you press the starter to start the engine, oily gasoline comes out of the exhaust. Can you help me? Also, there are syringes inside the log. I don't understand what they do. Hello my pump diagram says it has a small o ring with the plastic spacer. Does the o ring slide over the spacer or do I put the o ring in before the spacer. @BornAgainBoating 5 жыл бұрын
Probably something to do with the spark or the timing. Evinrudes, depending on the year, have issues like that. Where the timing gets thrown off and they won't fire up but will spin all day. You need an Evinrude tech that knows how to troubleshoot the electrical system :) (That is if the fuel system and other things are operating properly, it could be something as simple as the keyswitch! Has anyone checked for spark?)
