I'm binging on your old video's. I'm here 4 yrs later and the advice is still gold! The sad thing is I'm here 4 years after the video and that old engine is a heck of a lot newer than my engine is today. I'm running a 1987 Merc BM 150. I rode old two stroke dirt bikes and have always had two strokes in my life. I love two stroke engines and the thought of a V6 two stroke engine is just awesome to me. Then when you here it fire up and that 2 stroke growl comes out ❤❤. As you know down here in Florida we don't really have to worry about cold starts to much and thats usually when a two stroke is a hassle to bring to life. Down here it's heat that you have to worry about. This old Merc runs hot even when the cooling system is working 100 % it's not hard to cook the electrical components in it idling or slow speed trolling or running it to hard for to long. Two strokes with this much displacement and being air cooled need to have consideration of temperature at all times and may require down time for cooling. That's one of the things you have to deal with if you want that raw power of a two stroke.

Late comment but I just had to do this to a 60hp Suzuki that had been sitting for 7 years, owned by my daughter'sboyfriend. I should have searched for this video beforehand. The vst was filled with stale fuel so bad that it was like molasses and had buggered the hp pump. It eventually went with a new pump and a complete fuel system flush including injectors. One important step is also to drop the leg and inspect or replace the water pump or even just the impeller. I replaced this one but also had to flush the cooling system to get it to pump water. I thought your step of spraying the cylinders with oil was a really good idea but, like I said, I didn't search for this video before I did the job. Thanks again for the great video and all your other videos. There are plenty of us out here that really appreciate that you take the time to post them, and hopefully you get some time to boat and fish too.

That is a terrible idea nobody...... if you heat up thin injector 1 it would expand. 2. you might melt the lacquer that is keeping those solenoid winding in the injector from shorting out . 3. you'd probably slow melt the plastic receptacles on the thing. 4. couldn't heat up the block holding it fast enough to get it to expand enough to make it easy to get out. P.S. ******* they make adapter that allow you to make a air hose to screw in to the sparkplug hole. if that doesn't do it something essentially doing what you have to do trying to get out a burdan primer using liquid.

You will need to hook a battery to it and then if the harness can be jumped at the plug, you'll just take a screw driver and jump the starter. email me at aaron@bornagainboating.com so this comment doesn't get burried and I don't see the replies.

Umm, to be honest, most of the big companies right now, when buying new, are making pretty reliable engines. Mercury's new V-6 or V-8 are still extremely new to say anything about, but I would say to stick with a Yami, Merc, or a Suzuki. Evinrudes don't seem to be as caught up with the rest of the industry. There are people that swear by their E-TEC's but then the other 50% of E-TEC owner's hate them. I know our FWC down here blew up 7 E-TECS in one year, they shortly after took every single one off of their boats...

The fuel is no where as bad as that 300 its just a little bit cloudy . will the fuel filters water traps stop it going into the injectors it is running awesome for now
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 жыл бұрын
Depends on how old the fuel is, the water separators should catch any kind of debris or water before it gets to the engine. There are companies that polish fuel and fuel tanks, but that depends how bad it is. If the engine is running great and you just have some really old fuel. Just unhook the fuel line from the primer bulb and put a cheap fuel pump from napa or advanced auto and pump the old stuff out and get rid of it. Then just fill up with some fresh ethanol free blend and put some ring free in the tank. That'll be fine. Otherwise if the fuel isn't that bad, put some ring free in it and go out and burn it all up! Then fill up with some fresh fuel :)

As long as there isn't anything wrong with the fiberglass tank, you shouldn't have trouble there. 5 month old ethanol fuel shouldn't be that bad. The HPDI should burn that without an issue. Try to burn it up quick though, it's in the stage now of slowly loosing it's octane.

@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 жыл бұрын
You might be looking at a little different process being 15 years! The good thing is that it was kept in a garage. Where are you located? Seeing a boat was put in a garage for and kept there for 15 years, I would say it is likely that the engine was flushed and fogged before storing it and so you might have very little work that needs done to it :) Maybe just pumping out the old gas and filling up the tank with new gas. Changing out the fuel filters and maybe a set of plugs. What kind of engine is it? Most mechanics charge around $100 an hour and shops (In the keys) are around $140 and hour. If it is a good situation being in the garage and taken care of. It might only be 2-3 hours of work so you could get away with a couple hundred bucks! Worst case scenario is that it take a couple of days so lets say 16 hours of work. You are looking at about $1600 dollars plus parts. Let me know more about the situation and I could probably give you a better and closer number!

@rymaal Sorry, this comment got buried and I missed the notification! That looks like a really clean boat. Being up there in OR you probably won't see any of the corrosive issues that we see down here. That engine will probably fire right up, I would just go through the steps as in the video. Just drain the carbs and then put fresh fuel in them. Most likely with that engine, you are probably looking at cleaning out the carbs and then putting a set of spark plugs in it! You might even get away with not having to clean out the carbs though! If you do, it should only take a couple of hours to clean and put back together, if nothing breaks or is not messed up. Judging by the way the boat looks, the engine is probably in really good shape!

What product do you use to lube the pistons?
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 жыл бұрын
Just some engine fogging oil is fine, just to get things lubed before running the engine :) Starbrite Fogging Oil, or CRC Fogging oil, I don't think the brand is as important as just getting some sort of oil in the cylinders

@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 4 жыл бұрын
No! Don't do that! You can destroy the engine doing that! The HPDI isn't like an old carbureted two stroke that you could do that with, you can't take off the oul systems on direct injected engines :( so hpdis and optis you don't want to do that! Sorry

Should of replaced the vst filters no matter what. Fuel water separator primer ball and all fuel lines from tank to engine and the check valve. If you lean out a two stroke just once you could cause pre detonation and cost a customer an engine

I recently purchased an E-Tec 225 that has been sitting for about 10 years unfortunately they added fresh gas and oil and ran it and didn't clean the fuel system before starting. Now my injectors are clogged and are out for cleaning. What would you guys recommend as a fuel treatment to keep them from clogging up again
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 жыл бұрын
Oh man, that's a bummer :( hopefully they get back in soon! You can just run some Quickleen or some Ring Free occasionally with your fuel fill ups. That should keep the injectors pretty clean! Both of those products are really good!

Will this all be the same for a 1987 Johnsonville and evenrude?
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 4 жыл бұрын
Yup, this is basic to all outboards. You are basically going over all the vitals of the engine and making sure you aren't pushing bad fuel into the engine's fuel system. Those old Johnson's though you are going to be draining the carbs and you might have to clean the carbs, depending on the situation.

You should try and get it running to see if compression will come up. It should still run with 80 psi compression. Also make sure that the pistons don't have any play in them

great video, just joined you channel. question, merc 90 hp 2001, 4 carb's. 1 carb no fuel coming out of bowl, cylinder not getting fuel. any ideas on freeing up the debris in it WITHOUT removing the carb's? engine runs on 3 cylinders, compression is good, all on new gas and filter, spark verified strong and ok. can we start it and put carb cleaner in the throttle area of the bad carb? any other suggestions?
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! You can try and disconnect the fuel line to that carb and put some powertune into the line and then run the engine hard. That might work, but it would be a lot easier, quicker, and better to just take the carbs off and clean them :)

@@BornAgainBoating Hi, may i ask why removing the float bowl screw on any of the 4 carbs doesn't pour out fuel "at idle"? Lastly i know dumb question but on the carb in question is there not a way to somehow put a 90 degree pick wire up and actuate the float that could be stuck? I agree carb removal would be real nice, there are some very difficult intake manifold bolts that look impossible to get to on the bottom, i would love to try the job but i don't have anyone to ask when i get to that bolt how to remove it.
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 4 жыл бұрын
Whenever you take the drain screw out, fuel should come out of the bowls. If not, they are either clogged or there is no fuel in them. I don't know of anyway to stick something in the carb without removing it. You're bolt shouldn't be that difficult. Just a swivel socket should do the trick. Probably have to split the side chaps if that is possible. That should get you more room. Is this a carbuerated 4-stroke?

Besides flushing it with the flush port, what should a person do if they completely cloged a verado 350 with sand, overheated it, immediately shut it down and started it and stoped it a few times until water flowed again? (Asking for a friend) are there any places that need to be cleaned out like the water strainer etc? Thank you.
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 жыл бұрын
Hello! It happens, they aren't the first person to do that :) If it's peeing then the water pump impeller is still working fine. It would be good to pull the thermostat and back flush it, clean out the thermostat housing, and then you should be fine. Depending on how mechanical they are, it wouldn't be a bad idea to drop the lower unit and clean off the water pump housing. Depending on when the last oil change was. You can clean out a 5 gallon bucket and then reuse the oil if it is pretty fresh. Just make sure that the oil drain plug seal gets replaced, don't unscrew it and then put it back in without replacing. It's basically a smash seal, so once it's been smashed, the seal never seals up properly again. It might hold for awhile, but then could leak without you knowing it and possibly run low on oil while out and about! Here's some videos that could help get you in the right direction: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXy5ZGCkattob9E Lower Unit Impeller Replacement: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6XMp6upmdx4p7s

Thanks very much. From my flow diagram it looks like only smaller components receive strained raw water while the block etc get it all. The thermostat was clean but I should have backfushed from there in hindsight. Seems like everything under the cowling has water running through it... I will do as told. I already replaced the water pump as I lost a few psi at idle in the weeks that followed. Great channel. GB
