For many years Borneo’s diminutive pygmy forest elephants were believed to be a feral population derived from domesticated imported Asian elephants.. Now DNA testing has confirmed they are a unique subspecies, who’ve lived on Borneo for at least 300,000 years. This story tells of tells the story of a forest guide, Bert Dausip, who observes and befriends the elephants. His daily expeditions deep into the jungle reward him with some of the most intimate and close up encounters with forest elephants ever filmed. The film culminates in his successful mission to save them from poachers, and have their forest home protected Following Bert we witness some incredible footage revealing the most intimate secrets of elephant family life.
Bert discovers one year old Fig and his elephant family living in the forests alongside the Kinabatangan River, in north-eastern Sabah. Occasionally these animals are seen bathing in the river - a magnificent sight where 50 elephants come together for a spectacular water show. Adults, juveniles and infants all spraying water, rolling in mud, and socialising. Most often the elephants move about in smaller family groups in the forest.
In befriending these elephants Bert has discovered something amazing: Pygmy elephants are far gentler than anyone could have ever imagined. He can regularly approach them within just a few meters. They aren’t the aggressive killers that people think they are. Even females with newborns accept his presence.
Getting so close to the elephants means that Bert has been able to get to know them and observe these secretive animals close up. What he has seen, and what this film will show is very special indeed.
No expert who studies forest elephants in Asia or Africa has ever gotten this close to their subjects, but Bert can. He is probably the only person in the world who can track down observe forest elephants in their wild forest home on a daily basis. This in itself is a spectacular accomplishment, but little did Bert know that once he collected the DNA samples for science his familiarity with the pygmy elephants would become crucial to an action plan to save these remarkable animals and their habitat.

This was an amazing documentary. Burt is equally amazing in his courage to bring the story about these pygmy elephants to our attention. I salute the vets and their determination to heal the wounded elephants and preserve their habitat as well. I hope the commercial loggers and the deforestation of the unique biodiversity of this island are halted and the predervation of the forest ensures the pygmy elephants will survive long into the future.

What an amazing video. I loved watching it. It is so great to see the elephants started to trust Bert and allowed him to stay close to the group. Helping the wounded animal will only increased that feeling. Just hope the elephants don't meet the wrong kind of people. Restoring the jungle is something which needs to be done everywhere. Who ever allowed companies to start oil palm plantations in areas where there was jungle should be arrested and put away for life. 👍

So interesting that the baby elephants’ defensive strategy is to try to back kick rather than charge. It’s funny to see them keep turning their backsides to him, lol. At 16:06, Flora determines where he is by smelling with her trunk, adjusts herself slightly, pauses and acts like she’s not going to do anything and then suddenly throws a kick right at him, which came close.

HEIGHT 8.2 - 9.8 ft *INFO:* The smallest Asian elephant subspecies, Bornean elephants are distinctly smaller than their mainland cousins. They have long tails that sometimes touch the ground, relatively large ears, and straighter tusks. While they are also known as Borneo pygmy elephants due to their smaller size, at 8.2-9.8 feet tall, the Bornean elephant is the largest mammal on the island. Once believed to be remnants of a domesticated herd given to the Sultan of Sulu in the 17th century, Bornean elephants were determined by WWF to be genetically different from other Asian elephants. DNA evidence proved that these elephants were isolated about 300,000 years ago from their cousins on mainland Asia and Sumatra.

The elephants are so lucky to have these men and women dedicated to their well being. The pain from her leg must be horrendous but to think it was inflicted by man without a heart breaks my being

Wow - what a beautiful video! Bert's love and respect for the elephants was very poignant. Thank you to all in Sabah who protect them so that they can live long, happy lives.

This man is a hero for all of us "enlightened" individuals. This is noble work and it should be made a record of and embraced. Those leaches looked horrible! OMG

This documentary is a wonderful thing. I hope that this video and other ones would be shown in all schools in different countries. People need to see that there is more in this world than some other petty ideas. Great job Bert.

For once a happy ending for the wildlife. God bless the humans that have helped this, also the lovely young man who helped this to come about. Other animals in the wild are not so lucky, I'm afraid.
