I fell in love with the Nocturne from this quartet when years ago we used to regularly attend Berkeley Symphony wine tasting events. Their chamber quartet played it every time and it was always my favorite piece. The entire quartet is a balsam for my soul.

Borodin was a research organic chemist , a musician part time but what exquisite compositions . He is the only composer to receive a TONY award posthumously for his melodies used in the both the stage and film musical Kismet . Forrest and Wright added the lyrics but gave Borodin full credit for the music. He was a member of the mighty handful who eschewed conventional western music for that based on Russian folk songs and tales, none of them had a structured musical education save Rimsky-Korsakov who became St Petersburg conservatory’s best pupil (his own words)upon accepting a professorship there he left an autobiography My Musical Life. By best pupil I mean he taught himself using the extensive library of music theory

Tonight I have been enjoying this treasure of a performance for the first time. This legendary quartet plays with a good, natural authority and harmony that brings piece to my mind. I´m already looking forward to return to it, hopefully many times. Thank you so much for posting.

Greetings to a fellow Borodin fan. This is, indeed, the definitive performance of this piece (unless you count Borodin and his pals in the parlor of his apartment; oh, to have been a fly on that wall!). Have you heard Borodin's First String Quartet in A-Major? I actually like it better than this one, though I may be in the minority there. There is a fine performance on KZbin by a group called The Omega Ensemble, almost as good as The Borodin Quartet's performance. Also, you may have heard Borodin's "Unfinished Symphony"? Borodin sketched the entire scherzo for that work in string quartet form, a rollicking and joyful piece guaranteed to lift your spirits. I believe it is on KZbin posted by an ensemble called Vertavo or Vendradis, or some such. Am I correct in guessing that you may be Norwegian (my favorite tuba virtuoso is Oystein Baadsvik)? I have become something of a Nordophile (is that a word?); I have had elghunds as companions for more than half my life, and the granite for my kitchen counters is sourced from Norway.

Сам звук в порядке; только запис чуть страдает, это не вина квартета.
