Borussia Monchengladbach are a well-established part of the Bundesliga, currently having been in the league for the past 15 years. But all the way back in the 1970s, they were one of the best teams in the world, winning many honours including 5 league titles, with greats such as Jupp Heynkes and Berti Vogts being part of their side. They were perhaps one of the greatest sides European football has ever seen, but sadly, due to them failing to clinch the club game’s biggest honour, they are often overlooked in the history books.

The power of Borussia Moenchenglabach during the 1970's must be the inspiration for the current squad of the team where I do see them progressing well in the coming years, good friends!!!:-D

The national team also won 2 Euros in 1972 and 1980, as well as the 1974 World Cup, during that period.

I’ve had numerous arguments with United fans that ‘Liverpool’s European cups were from a weak era because they played teams like Gladbach (+Club Brugge) in the final’. Laughable Unbelievable team, if they were around today they’d be hailed as ‘streets won’t forget’ for their attacking flair and sticking it to the big boys. They were so unlucky to keep coming against Munich’s greatest ever team and one of Liverpool’s greatest ever, otherwise they’d easily have had even more domestic success and won at least another 2 European trophies. They are very similar to St Ettiene in that regard. Although I think part of the allure is that they DID take on Munich’s best (Maier, Breitner, Beckenbauer, Schwarzenbeck, Hoeness, Rummenigge and Muller). While they were conquering Europe this lot were cleaning up at home! The 74 West Germany team must have had at least 7/8 starters from Munich + Gladbach, truly an incredible era for German football

Very well said, plus that Club Brugge side was coached by Ernst Happel, who guided Feyenord and Hamburg to European cup glory! Funnily enough I was talking to my mum about BM and she said she remembers them from tbe 70s, so the fact Liverpool beat them twice is testemant to Shankly & Paisley

@@afcfinners even though I wasn’t alive for it I ‘miss’ (yearn for?) the days where the Europa League/UEFA Cup was a proving ground for up and coming teams rather than what it is today as a consolation prize for the teams that weren’t good enough for the UCL. Sadly football is too solidified now, gone are the days where previously unknown clubs can challenge Europe’s best (unless you have Oil money) I’ve watched your video about Happl, do you have any on either Club Brugge or St Etiene?

@@KC1996LFC At least the conference league is becoming that though, credit where it's due there. But yeah I hate how much of a closed shop the CL is... Happel vid is the only Brugge one, however I have on on Albert Batteux who lead Saint Ettiene to 3 league titles, as well as Reims to 7, remains the most successful coach in Ligue 1 history

@@afcfinners my take on the conference league is it’s a fantastic idea, however it has the potential of being misused You have 7 ‘big’ clubs (rich) clubs in England, so assuming they don’t clown it up (looking at you Chelsea) and something ‘out of the ordinary’ like an outsider winning the FA cup/team winning UCL then not qualifying, they will take the top 7 spots. That means teams like United and Chelsea will be in the conference where they won’t take it seriously (Spurs 2021). The conference is perfect for clubs like Villa and West Ham to gain some European experience, give them fans some good away days and grow the stature of the club. Eventually you’ll end up playing some pretty big and historic clubs. Look at the memories the West Ham fans have made (admittedly they have also qualified for Europa). It also ‘cleans up’ the Europa and removes the ‘wifi passwords’ that aren’t ready for that level of European competition, and allows them to develop against each other, rather than get stuffed by the likes of Liverpool, Marseille and Roma. So here’s my solution to improve it even further. If you qualify for the UCL proper, you are banned from the Conference League for the next 2 years. This stops a team like Newcastle, Chelsea, United etc having 1 bad year and then taking the spot away from a more deserving mid sized team that’s over achieved. If you were good enough to qualify for the UCL and within 2 years are now in the conference you could do with the chance to ‘reset’ and focus on the league anyway. Hopefully see more clubs of the level of a Brentford, Wolves, Forest + Everton if they get their act together, get to experience European football.

@@KC1996LFC Fair points, and yeah I think that's a good shout re the stopping being in Conference League for 2 years. I also think the whole thing where you go to EL if you finish 3rd in champions league and same for EL to conference league should go, either you're in one tournament or you're out, it's like rewarding a team for failure.
