The Eredivisie is the first league of football in the Netherlands with several internationally acclaimed clubs playing in it such as Ajax from Amsterdam, Feyenoord from Rotterdam and PSV from Eindhoven. But where did the names and nicknames of these Dutch clubs come from?

Origin of kasteelheren: A - There once was a castle in the district Spangen, where the stadium (called Het Kasteel before sponsors named it) is located B - Partly because of this the entrance of the stadium looks like a castle The song King of my castle by Wamdue project is (or was until a few years ago) played before the game started (before De Sparta Mars).

Hey Hilbert, De bijnaam De trots van Zuid komt voort uit de rivaliteit tussen de Rotterdammers boven en onder de Maas. Zo is Feyenoord een club van het volk (arbeiders) en Sparta een club van de heeren (elite). De leden van Sparta, hoogopgeleid en uit de gegoede burgerij, vonden het maar niets dat ze vanaf begin 20e eeuw op het voetbalveld steeds meer arbeiders tegenkwamen met ook nog eens andere omgangsvormen. Dit verschil in cultuur en sociale klasse was nogal eens reden tot oplopende spanningen tussen de clubs. De successen van Feyenoord gaven de bevolking op Zuid iets om trots op te zijn.

Nice list, but I think you missed some things. With regard to Feyenoord: - They are also called 'de stadionclub' (the stadium club). I once heard that it comes from Feyenoord being the first (or one of the first) to have a stadium, but I cannot find a source for that. Another explanation can be that De Kuip is considered iconic. - 'de trots van zuid' (pride of (the) south) has to do with the club being located south of the river Maas - therefore being from the south of Rotterdam - and has nothing to do with workers from the south of the country - They changed from Feijenoord to Feyenoord, because that way it was easier to pronounce for foreigners, since they were having international success in that period. With regard to Vitesse (being Chelsea II): - They have a cooperation with Chelsea, that loans players to Vitesse to gain experience. So they don't buy them (maybe there are some exceptions), but the players are on loan. And how do you mean you "believe" Emmen is in the province of Drenthe. Of course it is, lol.

Maybe this will be an interesting addendum, but many of the team mentioned in this video, AZ, FC Utrecht, FC Twente, FC Groningen and others are fusion clubs of local teams. That may also be why many of the nick names seem to be a little on the boring side. One interesting story is about the name of a team from the town I was born in. AGOVV, today it stands for Allen gezamenlijk oevenen voert verder (which means something like: All training together makes you better). However, this was not the original meaning, which was Apeldoornse geheel-onthouders voetbal vereniging, and that stands for Apeldoorn teetotallers football club (Apeldoorn being the name of the town). The story goes that not long after the team was established they found several of the players drinking in a bar. If they had kicked them out of the club they would no longer have enough players to field a team, so they dropped the teetotaller requirement and changed the meaning of the name. AGOVV used to play professional football in the past, but they are now an amateur club. Another Dutch (amateur) club that has a name that I always liked is TONEGIDO, and that means: Tot ons nut en genoegen is deze opgericht. And that means in English: This team has been established for our benefit and entertainment. I think they have now fused with a few other clubs as well. (My translations of the above Dutch names are more to capture the meaning than to be exact.)

FC Twente is really from the city of Enschede, although it represents the Twente region. It was established in 1965, when two clubs from the city became one club. Those two clubs were SC Enschede and Enschedese Boys. Thats why you'll sometimes see fans wave the colors green, black and white among the red.

Cool video! As a Vitesse fan I would like to add a couple of things. - The nickname FC Hollywood aan de Rijn is a reference to all the drama and unrest within the club. Ever since the club fell into the hands of foreign ownership it has been a bit of a drama show. - Another nickname that would be worth mentioning is Airborne FC. This name is reference to operation Market Garden and the fighting that happened in Arnhem during WW2. Every year in September Vitesse play the so called Airborne match, where they invite veterans of Market Garden to come over and watch the game so we can honor them and thank them. The club plays in a special kit in the colors of the first British Airborne division and the club and city fly banners with the badge of the Airborne division all over the city.

Fun fact... the Nickname "Kakkerlakken" came from a rumor that Amsterdam people made up since they could not come up with a response to "The Jews" slur. The story they made up was that there was a cockroach plaque in Rotterdam. Ajax fans tell themselves it is True and that it was in the newspaper. But the newspaper article they are refering never mentioned nothing about cockroaches, but "Ongedierte" in a broader sense and also it wasn't in Rotterdam but in an area that is Zeeland.

FC Twente’s ‘De Tukkers’ comes from the era of the textile industy in the region. Common attire that day was of the workers wearing certain trousers in which they always put their hands in their pockets. Pockets in the local language is called a Tuk. When ‘foreigners’ from outside the region visited back in the day it would seem like everyone walked around with their hands in their Tuk, hence (de) Tukkers.

My local team Wrexham used to be called the Robins as their first kit was red. Then somewhere in the recent past they became the Dragons because they're a Welsh team and the red kit. My preference is Robins as the bird is small and tenacious, which suits the teams spirt through its history. Spanish teams' names sounds fun, it doesn't matter if they a Real or pretend.

Heya! I just saw this. First off, happy to hear that you support Feyenoord instead of Ajax lol. Anyways, others have pointed this out already but: 1. Kralingen is not a separate village; it's been a part of Rotterdam since 1895. Excelsior was founded in 1902 so it's very much a Rotterdam club. 2. I wouldn't say the Feijenoord area is "close to the center". It's on the south side of the city, whereas the center is on the north side. "De trots van zuid" also refers to this fact; it has nothing to do with the geographical location of Rotterdam within Holland, or with folks coming from outside of Rotterdam.

I like Excelsior more in the sense of rising above, like the verb to excel, which has the same dual meaning, like exceeding. One thing I like more is that Rotterdam hydrologically speaking is on the river Rhine, as only a fraction of the water flowing through the city is from the river Maas, which itself mostly discharges on the Haringvliet. I think the naming of rivers in the Netherlands is really quite interesting, with them moving about through the ages on the account of the Netherlands being a big delta and ending up with names that on the surface seem te make no sense. A video on the history of waterflow through the Netherlands would be amazing! ;-)

10:40 As a Nijmegenaar, I have to point out a small, very common, misconception. You got the full name right, but the backstory is slightly off. It's not a unity of a multiple clubs from the city (which would make it Nijmeegs(ch)e EendrachtsCombinatie, or Unity Combination from Nijmegen). The name comes from the two clubs that fused: NVV Nijmegen and Eendracht. So the name roughly means: Combination of Nijmegen and Eendracht. Also, you forgot to point out the (very original) nickname: Enniesee, which is basically how you pronounce the abbreviation in the local accent/dialect. Anyway, great video!

I have a part Dutch friend and his family (mum's side) are from Volendam, and he confirmed the nickname "The Eel-Farmers" but says there are two more nicknames - "The Herring Stranglers", which should be obvious, and "The Window Cleaners" because Voldendammers have a reputation (men included!) of being obsessivly house-proud.

I must say I really like this concept. Teaching people from outside the Netherlands a bit about our favorite pastime and our football clubs. I am however a bit disappointed in the amount of information you shared and (what seems to be) a lack of research. I think you missed a lot of cool and fun nicknames for a lot of the clubs (especially the smaller ones) and your explanation of some of the nicknames are incorrect. It would’ve been a lot more informative and interesting if you went a little more into detail for each club and talk a bit about where their name came from and distribute your time equally per club. A lot of clubs were kinda brushed over, and I think that’s a shame as every club has their own piece of interesting history.

Tukker comes from the Twentish word "tuk", which means pocket. People from Twente are known to be verry down to earth and tend to not overreact. Standing with your hands in your pockets is body language that fits this behaviour. Verry cool video. Geluk in tuk!

De naam Lucky Ajax komt inderdaad van meerdere geluksmomenten, maar de belangrijkste mis ik nu. In 1969-1970 won Ajax de beker terwijl het eigenlijk al was uitgeschakeld. Het bekertoernooi was destijds opgezet met een schema waarbij 7 teams in de kwartfinale belandden en er nog 1tje van alle afvallers bij geloot werd. Dat was Ajax en de cup werd alsnog gewonnen

So first: about half the Dutch population historically is catholic. The south is completely catholic and in the rest of the country there are islands like Volendam or the area where they grow the tulips. Many of the clubs that were founded after WW II are actually fusion clubs. So for example the roots of FC Groningen go back to 1915, or for my local club Fortuna Sittard they go back to 1902, but the club Sittardia from Sittard (itself a fusion club) only fusioned with Fortuna '54 from Geleen (created as one of the first professional football clubs in the Netherlands) to form Fortuna SC, now Fortuna Sittard, in 1968. The name of Heerenveen comes from Gentlemanpeat. This name comes from 3 gentleman who controlled the area (landlords) who eventually merged to make one of the earliest corporations, that whole thing with stocks, which was a brand new thing back then. So the part of Heeren doesnt come from God (as in the Lord) but from Gentleman (landowner).

As an Eindhovenaar let me correct you on the translation of "boeren". Yes, literally it means farmers but that is not what is meant by it. When PSV was coming up in the 1960's and 70's supporters of Ajax and Feyenoord started to call PSV supporters Boeren as a derogatory term and PSV fans took it on as a badge of honour so the correct translation would be peasants.

Cambuur fans are also called herten deers. And both clubs in Friesland cal each other’s dkv (30 kilometers away). And the other club from Friesland. (wich I revuse to cal or type by name) is called by cambuur supporters farmers as a slur. Also Leeuwarden Anti Fries

Yeah although 'farmers' is pretty common either as a slur and/or as a 'geuzennaam' for most clubs in the country. Ajax-supporters will refer to PSV as farmers, even though Eindhoven is the 5th biggest city in the country. Our mutual friends in the east (the green-white ones) also call themselves farmers, coming from the 7th city in the country. Bit weird but ey. Finally, the name is It Hearrenfean and Ljouwert is definately Frisian. Forgotten that one of your club songs is called "it Woanskip"?😜

The pride of the south has absolutely 0 to do with supporters from wherever... It's the pride of South, not "the pride of the south". It's because the club is located in Rotterdam Zuid, which has a cultural and historic identity of its own. This also plays into one of the many ways to describe the three big rotterdam teams: de clubs van zuid, west en oost (clubs from/of south, west and east)
