Incredible work! I’m truly impressed by the depth of your research and your commitment to traditional film photography. Exploring the evolution of lenses from the 1860s Petzval to the 1970s Schneider Tele-Xenar is not only fascinating but also a beautiful homage to the history of photography. Your process of making albumen prints from wet plate collodion negatives is a true art form-it's inspiring to see someone keeping these traditional techniques alive. Best of luck with your new project on the Schengen border; it sounds powerful and deeply relevant. I’m looking forward to seeing how you capture the stark realities with such a historically grounded approach. Keep up the amazing work!

Man, this is so funny. I have the same camera as you (vageeswari 10x12), the same tripod and the same bubble level key chain on my car key..... And like you I have also a big petzval (magic lantern petzval) which cover nicely 10x12 without too much swirl. I have also an heliar 300mm (an ugly repainted universal heliar 300mm bought very cheap on ebay but the optic is in perfect condition), it vignettes exactly like your one. I have also a big "Leitz Projektions Objektiv" 400mm f3.0 which I can only use wide open, my best investment so far (€60) . I like the way it renders. I have also made an adapter board sinar -> vageeswari so I can use the sinar shutter on the vageeswari. This is very handy for smaller barrel lenses.... I will follow your photographic adventures with interest!

Hi! I just have a few questions! What percentage of egg whites was it to the amount of ammonium chloride you added in the first step? How long did you have your paper dry for after coating the albumen and the silver nitrate? When you were coating your images, was it okay to have the indoor lights on? How long did you expose your images for? What else did you mix in with the sodium thiosulfate for the fixer and the sodium sulfide for the hypo clear?
@BorutPeterlinPhotography8 жыл бұрын
Check the link below, I made a video on the albumen printing. And you dry the paper until it is dry. Usually few hours will do, if you use some warm air flow even half an hour will do. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqisaXqiqamUrJY

@BorutPeterlinPhotography4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about the platinum print process, but with albumen a self-masking effect happens and consequently blacks are weaker and whites are shallower. That was an old video. I've learned how to use UV, but still sunlight is better without a doubt.

Hello! I want to get into printing Albumen, but many times I see people with really reddish results, and sometimes with really brown results. If I want more brown results, how do I go about that? Also, if you were to recommend chemicals for a beginner, what would you suggest and where do you get them from? (I do have experience dark room printing, but I'm a beginner to albumen.) Thanks :D

Borut, I am really pleased with your videos, I love all your work, especially collodion negatives & prints. Having read about Autochrome and other stuff I started to get interested in the process. I haven't seen a color print of this kind of negatives, then I had a quick idea but I think it could be a bit cumbersome to achieve. Is there any way that you can prepare 3 collodion negatives, expose them with red, green and blue filter (maybe even stack them like film does, with no need of 3 separate exposures, although focus could be trouble), and then print them on a color paper with an enlarger (to perfectly align them could be hard too) to get a color positive? I would love to see such thing, I share this idea with you because at the moment I don't think I can put up a darkroom in anytime soon too experiment with it (but it is a dream for a not so near future). Best Regards from Argentina, it's nice to hear from someone of Slovenija :)
@BorutPeterlinPhotography7 жыл бұрын
Kev Smith thank you. yes you can, but collodion is over sensitive to blue and slightly sensitive to green and not sensitive at all to red, so basically - NO.
@kevsmith19807 жыл бұрын

Hey Borut. I have one question, im going to start to study the process of Wet Plate Collodion. My question is, which cameras did u recommend to use? Like which Brands did u recommend. I saw the example of lenses and its very intersesting. Is there any book or information i can get about it? Greetings from Argentina. Keep on doing this sublime work.
@BorutPeterlinPhotography8 жыл бұрын
+vierja clatro huh, vageeswari is the best camera in the category price / performance. Kodak 2D is also very popular. There are many cameras. You can make one for yourself, just buy the book Primitive Photography. You must buy it with a plateholder and take special care that the plateholder is opened and plate is loaded from back. Dry plate cameras, you open the plateholder like opening a dark slide and inserting it. That's not good for many reasons. Otherwise I recommend Mark Osterman's manual on www.collodion.org or John Coffer's manual. I have many workshops, but best ones are at George Eastman House. www.topshitphotography.com/workshops/

I really enjoy your channel and your work. Nicely done! When you're developing that albumen print from the time you checked the exposure to gold toning it looks like there is no detail at all in the shadows. But your final framed print at the end does show the detail in the shadows. When does that come out, when the print is dry?
@BorutPeterlinPhotography8 жыл бұрын
+JourneysEnd1750 thank you! Indeed salt print, albumen print, collodion chloride print and other print-out-processes needs to be overexposed for about 50% (it depends), because washing and fixing will make it much lighter.

This is great art, you shouldnt sell on ebay, you should sell in a gallery! For much more money... Although you have to know that galleries are taking mostly 50 %... Or have you ever tried to take more money on ebay? Its worth much more....And I would consider not signing your pictures in front, but in the back, I wouldn´t like that the signature is so big in the front (from what I saw on ebay) ... it takes away the attention from the picture... Great work!
@BorutPeterlinPhotography7 жыл бұрын
Thank you, yes I have consider it and furthermore I have tried, but if a bear is your closest neighbour and you live in a country or should I say region, that nobody buys art, then it's kind of difficult to be picky. I have been successful commercial photographer, very successful, I build myself a house, but I do not want to do the work that I am frankly not proud of. I made a quick calculation and I've decided to go this way. I know this is totally unconventional, but so am I and the fact that I do not have a gallery, gives me the freedom to do whatever I want. Nevertheless I agree with you, time will come also for selling in galleries, but now I need to make a living from my art. That's my goal! It's not that bad, I still have two kidneys - that's my B-plan...

I do everyday photoshop, Lightroom and as you can see I also edit video, know something about HTML and other digital tools. Because that's what they are tools, I don't make a fuss about it. I have two kidneys, but I would sell my friend's kidney first, since he isn't that much friend all of a sudden... Albumen print hasn't have this kind high glossy surface, it has much more charming gloss. But that's the matter of taste. Ha, ha, yes, I have workshops, many of them. See you soon ;-)
