Bosch has brought two new compact sabre saws to the market! Much like the Milwaukee Hackzall, these reciprocating saws are made to be used single-handed. Both the 10.8V and 18V products have their place, but which will suit you better?

I found this saw to be indispensable when removing a row of ancient yew bushes. The roots are too tight to get at with my Japanese pruning saw (no room for the stroke without bumping into another root.) But with the short stroke of the 10.8V I could get through the morass. Still a lot of work on the dense wood. On a hot day by the time I ran through two battery packs, it was time for an iced tea break :) Several makers are now offering curved pruning blades for the reciprocating saws.

it takes long to cuy wood because you are not using the right blade. the hand saw has the right tooth for the job!. thank you for the video. I really appreciate the work you put on it!

[Dwain] There are more aggressive blades out there for sure, but you don't ALWAYS want the most aggressive cut you can make ;) These were just the ones provided by Bosch for the review.

10.8 is a great bit of kit for cutting notches in joists for pipes and cables. Allows you to get a flat cut in the joist as the body fits inbetween the joists so it only takes 1 good whack with the hammer and chisel to remove the noggin.

Had the 10.8v saw for 3 years now and it is still going strong. A really handy unit it has got me out of a few tight spots (sometimes literally). If you are a sparky or plumber then you really should get one, as long as you understand its limitations as well as its strengths.

[Dwain] which 10.8V version do you have? DEwalt/Makita? I always say that if you can do the same work with another tool, always choose the other tool. But if you need one, there's no replacement...

Bosch blue for me all the way ;) too invested in the system now! The 10.8v range just gets better and better, absolutely my go to option unless I have to. I loved the big 18v range review you guys did a while back, any plans to do the same with the 10.8v range from the big 5?
@OZToolTalk
@OZToolTalk 8 жыл бұрын
[Dwain] no, no immediate plans. we don't really do a heap of 10.8V, so don't really feel that qualified to do so! I thought the 10.8V Bosch sabre only came out recently? How have you had it for 3 years?

It has been available in the UK for a good while now, since 2011 I think is when I first saw it. I don't know if they have released a newer version version recently but it looks identical to mine. Not sure why they would update it unless it was to release a brushless version.

You can mount the blade reversed like shown in this 5 year old review: kzbin.info/www/bejne/np3WpoOolKiBpbsm31s This way you don't have to awkwardly hold the tool upside down when cutting from below, and you will get a much more comfortable and safer grip. For copper pipe I think you can use a coarser blade than for steel for quicker cutting. It looks like they do this in the video I linked to, where they seem to cut through copper pipe faster than you did.

[Dwain] unfortunately I can't watch that video, mustn't be available to Aus viewers. But if you're right about the blade flipping, then I totally missed it. I should have checked because my old Dewalt could do it.

Great review! I’m in the market for a 12v recip saw for my work as a maintenance manager so plumbing/electrical/small repairs etc. I have both Bosch 12v and Milwaukee M12 batteries so how does this Bosch GSA 10.8v compare to the Milwaukee M12 fuel 12v? The Bosch looks smaller but way more power on the Milwaukee? Thanks!

I own this 18v recip saw. With a dedicated demolition wood only blade it cuts through anything with absolute ease. Same with metal, use a dedicated blade and it's like a hot knife in butter. Diablo make great blades, the ones that come with this saw I found were rubbish.

You can use both 10.8V and 12V batteries. The whole marked (Bosch, Dewalt, Stanley etc) just recently changed battery definitions from 10.8V to 12V as a gimmick, there is no actual difference. Keep on cutting!

Thanks for the review. You say both models are new, but Bosch has had the GSA 10.8V-LI on the market for more than 5 years now, at least here in Europe. So is this just new to the Australian market or have they made any changes to the original GSA 10.8V-LI and just kept the same model name, like they did with the new 18V drills? However GSA 18 V-LI C is unlike GSA 10.8V-LI a new model from Bosch. Here's a 5 year old UK dealer review of Bosch GSA 10.8V-LI: kzbin.info/www/bejne/np3WpoOolKiBpbs
@OZToolTalk
@OZToolTalk 8 жыл бұрын
[Dwain] it is weird that we got it so much later than Europe.I couldn't tell you if its different. Maybe they just decided to launch the 10.8V here as they were launching the new compact 18V (GSA 18 Li C)...

If you don't know the difference between Amps and Amps-hour then go back to school before saying stupid things like more battery capacity (amps-hour) = more power!
@OZToolTalk
@OZToolTalk 4 жыл бұрын
I've had this discussion with many people in the comments. I will summarise for you in case you want to improve your knowledge, but I won't argue on it because I'm sick of doing so. - Amp-hours to indeed represent the total power available and are therefore MORE about overall runtime than power - However more cells in the battery represents a high overall discharge capacity (instantaneous power). In essense, two layers of cells get to ADD their current as they are already both providing 18V. (note it doesn't actually quite double) - Not all tools take advantage of this extra power provided. But some do and it is NOTICEABLE. - I have spoken to multiple tool manufacturers on this and had it confirmed. - I've even seen different torque ratings on manufacturer websites when sold in different battery kits So no, I haven't said anything stupid. Your apology would be appreciated but hardly expected after doing this for 5.5 years now. [Dwain]
@caramida2118
@caramida2118 4 жыл бұрын
@@OZToolTalk , your lack of basic knowledge is disappointing (and you call yourself a "reviewer"). Each tool has an Amp rating (it's the max amp that it is able to be drawn from the battery). It is what you call "instantaneous power" :). One identical tool has the same max "power" (because it has the same max amp rating and a voltage) no matter the battery cell capacity. On the other hand, a 5 Ahr battery can last 5 minutes on a tool and an hour on another one (depends on how much "power" each tool draws from the battery). What you are babbling about related to the number of battery cells has to do with VOLTAGE (not AMPS). Each cell can deliver 3.6v (4v at max charge for a short period of time). For a "12v" tool you need 3 cells to be able to provide that voltage (3*3.6 or 3*4 volts = 10.8 V / 12 V). Now Watt, which is the unit of measurement for energy ("powah", for your clueless reviewers) is Volt x Amps (NOT amp-hours). So NO. Amp-hours does NOT represent "the total power available". A tool rated at max 5 Amps running with a 12v battery has a max power of W=10.8 x 5 (or 12 * 5 when the battery is at full capacity). If that tool runs at max amperage of 5, then a 5 Ahr battery will last one hour. A 2.5 Ahr battery will last 30 minutes. Basic mathematics. To sum it up, not only you don't understand the difference between Amps and Amp-hours but you also confuse Volts and Amps! Really, go back to highschool!
@caramida2118
@caramida2118 4 жыл бұрын
@@OZToolTalk , Also, do you know that a 12v battery has the same exact number of cells (3 to be more exact), no matter its capacity? A 12v 5 Ahr battery has bigger cells than a 2.5 Ahr (but there are still 3 cells). More cells = more voltage and more voltage directly impacts power, yes (if you skipped school, see my other comment about the power formula). But, more cells = higher VOLTAGE and NOT higher Ahr. Pff. The 18v batteries have 5 cells and Hilti's 22v batteries have 6 cells. If you don't believe me, open the battery packs and count the number of cells and do measurements (though I doubt you'll be able to do them correctly, no offense).
