Why not just drill another hole for the adjuster tool on the front and then flip the router around?

I'm used to larger, corded routers kzbin.infoUgkxfQ5_mgwq6PcudJvAH25t-I4D-3cTPz4z so this was a different experience for me. Basically, this is an incredibly sweet machine, fits well in the hand, etc. It has slightly less power than I'm used to, but that's understandable. Maneuvering freehand takes some practice. These days, it's especially nice to be able to avoid power cords. This is above the level of a hobbyist but below a pro level.

The flat side is a bit confusing, since you don't need a flat side to run along a straight edge. On a completely round base, the cutter will always maintain the same distance, regardless how you rotate the tool. It could actually get you into trouble, if you don't press with perfectly balanced pressure against the straight edge, the flat side will leverage the tool away from the fence and misalign the cut. The only advantage I could think of to having a flat side would be to fit in tighter spaces. It could act as a tool rest for wrenching off the bit-holding nut, without the tool rolling, but it's on the same side as the cord, so that wouldn't work either, unless you hang the chord over the edge of a table. I put way too much analysis into that.

would you mind doing a one-year after review ? I own this router for maybe 4 years now, and, while I love the power of the motor, there are few things I hate about it: - plastic for dust extractor all broke after few (light) usage... they are just too thin/brittle for such a big router - the fixed router base give really little space to unlock the nuts, but you're lucky, you have a quick lock, where I have to use two wrench... even harder is such a small space - the fixed router base fine control is almost not working and I have to sustain the motor by hand to remove some weight so the screw is working as normal (and there's no dust in it) - plunge router base have some oil leaking, making it hard to slide up/down and grabbing lots of dust - all the small hand-screws to change the setup (especially on the guide... vibration lossing them off) ...getting me nuts - plunge base felt from the workbench, and the micro-adjust know, full plastic, broke... I know I will be able to get a new one from bosch, but I'm sure it will cost me a hundred :) - I also bought the router table from bosh, and I HATE it. Actually I removed the small legs and made metal brakets and attached it to the side of my workbench (I can provide pictures if you want). I now have more space to unscrew the router bit... And the top is made of aluminum, leaving dark traces on every wood you slide on it... HATE IT ! /stop-ranting Always a pleasure to see some of your old videos. Thanks

What really bugs me is that Bosch Professional tools (and many others, such as DeWalt) are so much more expensive here in Europe than in the US. I know it's the market, and what about purchasing power yadda yadda yadda, but I still feel like I'm being ripped off.

I was thinking this router was price hiked here in NZ, but it turns out to be the same price as you'd pay for in the UK. That's still expensive, and markedly so compared to say the Dewalt DW618, but we are buggered without 240V power grid. I've had a Triton TRA001 on order since last November (nearly six months) but there is absolutely no sign of them coming to NZ any time soon. So if I can get a couple of questions answered, I think I'll get this Bosch with a fixed base and forget about the Triton.

Thanks for the detailed review. I got this set precisely because I wanted to benefit from the multi use system with the fixed base under a router table. For anyone considering this, please check that you get an insert plate that has exactly matching holes for the bosch base pre-drilled. I got an aluminium one without holes, so I just drilled and tapped them myself. I was 0.4 mm off target in the plate and could not attach all screws.

Hi Matt, I been wanting to purchase the GMF 1600 CE for a few years now and just not got round to it. Recently my GOF 2000 CE packed up. GMF 1600 is not available anymore. What is going on there. You have a direct contact with Bosch. Have you heard of a replacement in the pipeline? There must be something new coming out to replace it.

Good review mate. Agree about the screws for the extraction. I really like the delay in the trigger. Keeps it a true soft start. Worth mentioning the micro adjust can be used when the plunge base is locked, which is great for adjusting on the fly. The fixed base has to be unlocked to use the micro adjust though. Great versatile router. Love mine.

One question. Everytime you use the fixed base under the table you have to unlock to use the micro adjust or can you leave the base unlocked? ( is it dangerous?)

At the time I needed to upgrade my table router, the GMF 1600 cost > € 700 here in Norway, and it only came with metric collets. For about € 250 I was able to purchase the Triton TRA001 (2400W/3.5 hp) on sale and it included both metric and imperial collets (6,8,12mm, and 1/4,1/2''). Since I've been shopping for routers that accept imperial bits pretty much everywhere here in this backward country, but without luck -- just some big question marks wondering "what is a collet -- I finally figured, Triton is a no-brainer for me. I'm not associated w Gustavsenas.no but these guys are good.

So I have one of those and I absolutely hate it. I was looking at your video to see if there was things I was doing incorrectly or if there was some tips I could learn. The jack of all things, in my opinion is not a good thing as it does all those things not very well and I would highly discourage from using it in a table setup. I find that without locking the mechanism you cannot be sure the cutter is square with the plate but if you lock the mechanism you can no longer make adjustment. Also, that stupid handle trigger makes it impossible to use with any other professional lift (because you need the handle to turn it on). My recommendation is buy something else. Something more simple for your table setup and maybe a small hand router. It will probably cost a little more but you'll thank me.

Thank you for a detailed and clear review! I am a newbie and have a question about the router table mounting. You mentioned 2 options - either have the speed adjust dial facing you (how you have it currently mounted) or the lock mechanism and height adjust dial facing you (what you recommend). Is it possible to have the best of both by turning the base 90 degrees, such that the handle with the trigger is closer to you? Doesn't that provide fairly easy access to all the controls - speed dial on the right, locking mechanism on the left? Thanks again!

Brilliant Matt. I have a Bosch GMF 1600 CE. Why Bosch (a German company) doesn't offer the Bosch RA1181 router table in Europe is beyond me. It would be ideal. Instead I will probably have to spend twice this to get a professional quality non-Bosch router table for my Bosch GMF 1600 CE (MRC EVS 23K) router.

Matt - *this is by far the best intro to the Bosch GMF 1600 ANYWHERE* (and I speak German too). Thank you so much! I have just ordered one. Everything else I've looked at is a compromise and either doesn't fit in a table, can't use 1/2" bits, doesn't have enough power, has no extraction, ... you get the picture. I'd rather buy once than have to buy twice (and spend even more!) to overcome disadvantages. I've seen guys who have 2, 3 and more routers because they're always getting over a shortcoming. You've shown how this is darn close to a universal router saving money despite great versatility. Basingstoke is an old stamping ground - but now I'm in Switzerland for the last 31 years. All the best, Rob.

WELL DONE!!! Where were you when I was buying my three routers? Quite frankly, this was not available when I got my routers. Two big plunge routers and one small fixed base... Every single drawback you mentioned exists with ALL of my routers. Especially adjusting the router height while in the tables. (I've built two router tables to keep the big routers in but hate them because they require two wrenches to get the bits in and manual lifting to set the height.)

I heard and read that the plunger has some problems. Have you experienced any? Also, a BIG THANKS! for showing the features. I own 3 - 1617 (fixed and plunge) and didn't know about the dust collection more than the one that comes with the miter set-up which does't do me much good in my uses. My dust extraction failed badly. First, the chips within minutes had made the acrylic too hard to see through, it was just milky grey. Then, to add insult to injury, the plastic just snapped off. That is, without abuse - it just snapped :-(. Other than that, this router truly is a very sweet machine.

Seems to me it would be easier to adjust the variable speed from the back. Regardless, not sure how it's packaged in Europe (umm.. sorry... I mean UK), but fence is a separate item on this side of the pond. I'd buy that from Amazon, but not the router cause, post-sale support.

regarding changing cutters, I find with mine, once you have tension on the wrench you don't need to hold the spindle lock, so laying it on it's side, holding the spindle lock, use wrench to get tension then let go ( retaining tension on the wrench ) and then using the handles to brace against means you can put more than enough force to loosen or tighten the collet.

Unfortunately, the router is complete garbage! The main reason for buying it was two bases, a plunge and fixed. The idea was to mount the fixed under the table and use plunge in other cases. Fixed base does not work at all! It is supposed to be fine regulated with screw but the motor cannot move inside the base at all!! So, money down the drain! O.K. I said, lets buy a professional table plate from wood peckers... and another problem rises. First the motor does not measure like any other supported by most of plates so there is a problem mounting it and the second, the power switch is not on the motor but on the base so you cannot use the motor out of the base. I have manage to overcome most of the described problems just to figure out that it would be nice to have a few Watts more.... so... After all the problems it ended in garbage and I have bought a Festool OF2200 which is 3 times more expensive, but worth every single cent ! good luck

i've had three of these on the go for about 3 years, a fixed base machine in a router table and two plunge base machines for handheld use. Here in canada, they are called the mrc 23 blah blah blah! the 23 refers to the horsepower rating which of course is pure bullshit like all other hp ratings. you cant get 2.3 hp out of our 120V 15 amp circuits! love the routers for the same reasons as you. as you said, the north american versions use 2 wrenches(spanners) for the collet, much better for a big router. my only issue is with the machine upside down in a table. i do find that crap gets stuck in the low voltage tracks occasionally, this prevents the router from starting until it's cleaned out. with the machine(fixed base) in a router table, you can fine adjust the height with an allen key through a hole in the tabletop. oops i see you covered that feature! i have the height adjustment at the front, speed adjustment at the back, the speed adjustment is easy to find "in the dark"

I'm so sad now that I wasted 140 euros on the green version... honestly that one sucks some serious ass. there's a clip on it to hold the router down. but that loosens every time you start the machine. so you basically have to push it down the entire time. getting seriously sloppy work! if you ever think of buying one. go for the blue version and throw that extra money in the pot.

I like the idea of the track and circ saw design. But a one handed plunge feature sounds like a dream. But I'm not certain that the tool will be good over time. @dahut3614

Yeah, I bought one and I'm modifying it to reside permanently in a router table, but I can't say that I'd recommend doing so. The black piece can be removed along with the sliding contact part under it. The circuit board in the handle that also has the switch contains some surface mount resistors that work with the potentiometer in motor body to form a voltage divider for the speed control. I soldered a jumper wire to permanently activate the switch and moved the potentiometer to a remote location with a shielded three wire cable. I had to make four V-shaped aluminum spacers 2-inche x 2-inches x .222-inch and bent in the middle about 15° to make it fit my Jessem Mast-R-Lift. I had read in some forum that it was the same diameter as the slightly smaller Bosch router, but that was wrong.

For a beginner who is drooling over this router but doesn't have the money to get this. I highly recommend the Bosch POF 1400 ace/ POF 1200 Ace. Alot of the same features like the automatic depth lock. But the only drawback is that doesn't support 1/2" bits. But for me till now it hasn't been an issue yet

I also have it:) .... and I like the fixed base for hands-free copy milling so much that I bought another one ... so one can be permanently built into the table. And you install it in the table with the switch facing you, so everything is at hand - the spindle lock, the speed control and also the fastening clips. Fine-tuning the depth, however, you adjust above anyway ... but you adjust it roughly when inserting the motor.... So nothing is quite "behind" or "away from the hand".

Got this beast a couple weeks ago, been absolutely loving it and trying out all the different carbide bits and the shapes they create on my little projects- easily my favourite tool in my Bosch collection and thats saying a lot because I usually hate corded tools.

Hi Matt. Just took delivery of one of these in S Africa today. Looked at it and got to admit, was little daunted. Having watched your vid, can't wait to use the thing. Very helpful, as are all of your vids. Thanks.

Hi Matt I watched your review of this router and it clinched my selection decision, unfortunately with the Covid pandemic I had to wait several months to take delivery and then the router table I wanted (Rutland) was out of stock. Anyway to cut a long story short I'm in the process of building the the router table and I need to drill the mounting plate to take the router. Can you share any tips on centring the router, marking out the holes and drilling; I've been searching for instructions/videos but with no joy. Keep up the good work :)

Good review but the combo you are showing and the combo links in the description are not the same (?). The link combos do not include the accessories: Dust extraction covers, the edge guide, etc. Has this been discontinued (already). Cheers,

Nice review. Bought one. I wish I bought it Through your KZbin channel. I have one suggestion about the router table and the issue of detaching it blindly. Put a small mirror inside the box with a small light.

I bought one brand new, dead with less than 10 times light use. Went back to Bosch repair, they tried to charge me $170 to fix it. And with that quick change center bushing design you will never get it centered.

Hi Matt, Great review video. Have you done a follow up one about the using the Bosch under the router table. I would be really interested in how you have found it. I’m trying to decide between the Bosch and Triton, as they both offer above table height adjustment.

As you say in your video, the biggest advantage is that you don't need a router lifter, and this is precisely what has drawn me to this router. You rightly point out that a consequent £300 - £350 saving is to me made, but should probably have pointed out that this Bosch router is around £130 - £140 more than a Makita, so half of that saving is offset by the higher cost of the Bosch to begin with That said, the Bosch is still a saving overall, and probably easier to detach from the fixed base than a router lifter, but I am slightly concerned about the long-term reliability of the Bosch fine adjuster whilst it's mounted under the table, it looks a bit weedy....

A review that is long term, real world, and list actual good and bad? Don't think this is allowed on the internet. Thanks for showing the fix base setup on a table. Was debating which exact router to get, now I know I'll be getting it through your link.

The best review of the Bosch GOF/GMF1600 I have ever seen. Thumbs up and subscription left. I was not 100% sure before your detailed review but now it is clear to me that I will buy the GMF1600. Price / performance ratio, flexibility and multiuses is excellent from my point of view.👍🏻

Great video Matt. Very informative. could you possibly follow this up by showing us how to fit the various dust extractors included in the box and explain the different type of applications they are used for. There is also a guide bit adaptor, although l can't find anything online to use with my 30mm inlay kit. Admittedly it's a big beast for inlay work but it is possible. I regard this router as better than my Dewalt, Trend and Makita routers in several ways and it feels better ergonomically. I enjoy watching your videos, keep it up!

If Bosch fit this router with a removable power cable like Dewalt does with its top model, this router would be PERFECT. I own this router and I love it but I just got used to having a router with removable power cable. It would be nice if other companies besides Dewalt did this. Craftsman had a Pro model from before Stanley revived the brand with a removable cable and I also have that one and it’s a great feature.

The review is well done. However, there are a number of negative reviews of this router on Amazon that mention sticking of the plunge mechanism. This is mentioned often enough that it should have at least been commented on in this review. I would suggest any potential buyer check out the Amazon reviews.

Given how the power contact point are mounted for the trigger system these router will not work in any router lift system that doesn't mount the fix base to the table. With that in mind I'd still opt for the 1617.

About the table router. Am I being thick or you can just fix it with the locks to one side and the speed control to the other??? having a small angle to the fence you can even have the level adjuster near the fence.

Hi Matt, great video. Thanks to your information I'm considering getting this router. My question is, does this router fit straight to the ujk plate on the table or do you need to drill new holes or to use a sub base? Hoping you can help, thanks.
