Bosch GWS 18 V-LI Professional angle grinder review

The Bosch GWS 18 V-LI Professional is an 18v cordless angle grinder that can be used almost anywhere. This machine is very light weight and easy to use and if used with a 4ah battery this grinder can cut lots of material from a single charge. Cordless angle grinders have come a long way and this machine proves that a cordless grinder can almost match the power of a corded machine. This model will accept all 115mm discs (4.5 inch).

the resson when you turn the wheel by hand and its make a funny clicky noise its because the bosch 18v grinder uses 4 pole 4 brush motor with rare earth magnets to produce more torque. that is why when you turn the disk by hand it seems like something is wrong with the machine. but its normal.. :)

I've just got one of these for Christmas as I have a few other Bosch 18v tools and also the batteries and charger. So far I've only used it for grinding and the guard hasn't bothered me.

I have this same grinder. Had it for 4/5 years now and I think the worst problem I've had is a battery completely die with it is. Perhaps just a faulty battery but I was pushing the grinder hard, which leads me onto the point I've never really had a problem with it stall either. As for the guard it is a bit silly but best solution I found which also helps when changing discs is buy a Bosch SDS clic locking nut.

Noticed you use the 1mm dronco discs as well. The inox specials are amazing but I noticed some time ago that since I bought a pack of 25 in March 2015 for £14.50, they've more than doubled in price to between £32 and £40 (or 58p a disc to £1.28 best case when buying 25). How would you compare them to the Vulcan discs or others?

I didn't try the Vulcan discs, or at most I used one of them (years ago). I bought a pack of ten years ago when they were in the sale at Screwfix. When I was making this video I realised I had no discs left in the garage and so went to the van- but then realised the Vulcan discs expired in 2010! I went to the local ironmongers in town and picked up a tin of 10 for £10. I'm sure I have used Bosch's 1mm thick discs in the past and they are as good as the Dronco discs. I can imagine you up some scaff with thick gloves on trying to move the guard with that Allen key. Been there myself with my old corded dewalt. It was thick with gunk and I couldn't undo the clip. It was also -2C which was fun Anyway, another cold video. That was exactly what happened, I was up the scaffold with gloves, ear defenders, full face visor and gloves and needed to change the grinder from left to right handed to get into a tight space! I'm glad you find the videos useful, thanks for the comment ;-)

Another good review. Out of curiosity what size/make of bench vice do you have? Also what brand of cutting discs were you using and do you have a preferred[cutting/grinding disc] manufacturer?

Thanks. The bench vice is a Record 36 (6 inch), I bought it locally from a guy selling in on ebay for about £30 (they are over £700 new) I normally use Dronco 1mm thick slitting discs as these are stocked by my local shop, I did find a tin of Vulcan slitting discs in the back of the van but they expired in 2010 so I threw them in the bin! We use Dronco on site and have always been a good make. Thanks for the comment ;-)

Hi Arfan, For the skirting boards I would prime them using Zinsser 123. The gloss depends on the finish, I often use Zinsser AllCoat, which is a water based gloss. But water based gloss is not as shiny (glossy) as oil based gloss, but water based gloss is less likely to go yellow again. I recently painted an external window using AllCoat and it looks great. The AllCoat dries really quickly though and so you have to be quick when applying it, I struggled painting this gate using AllCoat in the summer as it dries so fast- kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5fLhZl7bd6jjLc You can paint onto lining paper with emulsion paint, but sometimes it can bubble. I recently painted over some lining paper and used Zinsser Gardz to prime it first, it looks like milk but soaks right in and gives a really hard surface to paint onto- kzbin.info/www/bejne/moPCaGdpqslrnqc

My Rigid 18V grinder makes the same noise when I spin it, I though it was because it was brushless. The Rigid has a tool free guard adjustment, it stalls on me when cutting 1/8" square tube.

bosch are a well known brand over here in Australia buy I had an old green bosch corded drill that belonged to my dad that is about 40 years old and it still works lol there pretty reliable but I don't like on that particular grinder is the switch my Milwaukee has the dead man switch where it is located wear your hand grabs the grinder so if it kicks and you let go the power cuts off its a good safety thing I know Hitachi and I'm presuming Dewalt has the same thing great video

I have a corded version of the 115mm GWS Bosch Angle Grinder, and mine has the spring clasp style, adjustable guard, works like a charm! It must be cheaper to produce the screw version.

I work as a marine engineer and use angle grinders regularly. I have been issued a 110V version of this grinder and like you find the guard extremely annoying as I often have to adjust to get into tight spaces. The most annoying part of this is that in previous version of this angle grinder the guard was simply adjusted by a button similar to that of the lock button. Why did they change it???

Hey man, good video, l just bought a Bosch 18v brushless combi with 2 4Ah batteries, l bought this angle grinder as well great tools although l did notice how quickly the power check lights on the battery did go down when using the grinder. Maybe l need 6 or 8Ah battery?

Most angle grinders eat the batteries quickly, it depends on how much you use it. A 6AH will last longer, but you could just use the other 4AH battery- it depends how much use the grinder gets, as the other battery might not have chance to charge etc.

All angle grinders can be used to cut wood with the correct blade, but it's not something I would recommend, as I have heard that the blades often jam and kickback! Thanks for the comment 👍

Good review, best to grind the grooves inside the guard then position can easily be changed with couple turns, l did mine, personally l think Bosch tools are better than Dewalt.

Not at all. I'm a maintenance engineer in two local chemical plants.I work on the trucks (bogies) that weight about 8 tons (empty) and often require new wheels. Large ovens some of which are big enough to hold three of the bogies mentioned above, these work like large pressure cookers and require a lot of maintenance of the steam/water pipework, the doors often need working on and some of those can weight 2 ton. Industrial washing machines for washing 3m*6m sheets of 10mm thick glass.Vessels that contain several tone of flammable chemicals. Stock tanks that hold 120 tons of the raw product. Bosch sells aftermarket guards which work just like the Dewalt one. Allso you can upgrade to a 125mm grinder this way, because the guard is the only difference between the Bosch 18v grinders.

I want to like DeWalt tools, they’ve been powerful enough when I’ve had them, but I’ve just had so many reliability issues with them so I switched to Bosch. So far my Bosch drill has lasted longer than when I had my DCD985 so I’m well invested into their ecosystem, I see why this would be annoying though.

One question... does it have an electronic brake where the disc stops as soon as you release the button?

It stops quickly but not immediately, so I think it does have a brake as the mains powered machines at work take probably 3-4 times longer to stop.

I have this grinder and the only problem I find with it is in tight spaces my thumb often catches the switch and turns it off.

They have just bought a new 110v Bosch grinder on site. The on/off switch is really weird and is almost the full length of the grinder, with a small red safety tab in the centre of it (it takes a bit of getting used to), but thankfully the guard can be adjusted by pressing a small lever with your thumb! I think they make these, so that they are easier to switch off, than they are to switch on - to reduce accidents. Thanks for the comment 👍

I have only ever used Evolution's TCT blades- they are awesome! Much better than an abrasive disc and so far none of the blades that I own have ever had the teeth chip or break.

You can change it from left to right handed use at any time. It depends what kind of position you need to be in. Often on site when working in cramped conditions, you had to constantly switch from left to right handed use etc. Thanks for the comment 👍

When working on site you need to move the guard all the time. There are 10 other maintenance people on site and some of them are left handed. Also when working in confined spaces on some machines you can't always use the grinder right handed, so you might need to swap the guard and use it left handed.

If I'm welding and fabricating I use a couple of corded grinders (Metabo and green Bosch). The guards on both are nicely "just tight enough" that I can shift them with a gloved hand. Which I do several times a day. I'd much rather have the guard in just the right place, and guarding me.

gotta switch from aluminum oxide to the metal max diamond cutoff wheels. I don't miss the shrinking wheels, exploding wheels, or clouds of aluminum oxide dust! I still wear a respirator though.

The worst thing for me about this grinder is it's brushed motor with irreplaceable brushes! When they die you have to replace the motor which costs half the price of the grinder itself. Gladfully Bosch has just released new brushless grinders where the guard problem has been also fixed.

I’ve been using one of these grinders on site a lot recently and wanted to review it, but I was unsure if the grinder on site had been damaged at some point, so I bought one just so I could test it out. The grinder is an awesome piece of kit that is let down by the annoying guard (I know it’s a safety feature but still annoying). Have owned the same grinder for nearly 2 years now and I cant say that I have experienced the issue you have with the guard. Even when your screw is fully loosened the guard seems stubborn to move but with mine I can have the screw loosely tightened and its able to move alot more freely It will also stay in position without then having to tighten the screw. I havnt touched the allen key since I brought it. Cant think why there would be such variances between the same tool

Good review, wish i had seen it first before buying. Bosch are normally so well thought out. You were too kind about the guard. I thought i was missing something, hence checked for vids. Plain silly, makes it impractical for most purposes . I will put a wire brush on mine, and leave it for that alone. The cheapest angle grinders have tool-less guards now, and this one doesnt even work well when its spanner is used. Asleep at the wheel on this one mr bosch.

I was using one of the Bosch 110v grinders at work a few weeks back and I was in a foul mood because of it. They have only fitted these stupid guards to their 110v grinders! I was doing a large job on an industrial vessel which needed a weld cleaning up all the way around it using a wire brush, so I had to keep moving the guard- but obviously I had to remove the wire brush before I could move the guard and mess about with the damn thing! ........ yes, it will cost a lot of fingers and eyes as people leave off the guards, and then the operator will get blamed ! modern world. I tried modifying mine to turn - no luck, not easy. So i cut mine back in size to minimise the need to turn it, not ideal either . PS. Top little youtube channel. Pleasant style, short and digestable, and half the time i come away with a top little tip, or something thought provoking - which is impressive, considering how well worn the path around tool tips is. Another problem with that guard is the fact it uses an allen key to undo it. Its a lot easier to misplace an allen key than a screwdriver, and the fact its cordless you cant even tape the allen key to the flex.

bosch do know better, my new bosch corded grinder (green diy) has a button you press to rotate the guard, no screws or tools, so why are they not consistent? bosch used to do it exactly like the metabo, but seem to prefer to make things more gimmicky laterly

I suspect they want to make sure that the guard is fixed in place when in use. With the Metabo style single screw people dont fully tighten the screw and just rotate the guard into place and rely on a little friction to hold it in place whilst cutting. I bet Dewalt have a patent on the lever style clamp. A badly designed guard is as dangerous as no guard at all coz some idiots just going to take it of and throw it away.

Isn’t it a good thing the guard is difficult to change its position? How many times when up a scaffold does one actually tighten the screw back up again and not just leave it loose? At least there is a reasonable amount of effort necessary to change the position and I would imagine the designers did this for the exact reason everyone dislikes this aspect of the guard. Safety before convenience wins.

No it is not a good thing. We need to change the position of the guard, we are highly trained and are all abrasive wheel regulation trained, as well as working at heights, confined space training and lifting and slinging trained. I'll not go into specific qualifications for the work that we do, but we are classed as trained engineers. We need to move the guard, with this grinder we cannot do that without removing the disc- it is a bad design flaw! The site I work on has an impressive safety record, we always put safety first! Having a grinder that is not fit for use does not make the job safer.

I like how they say its the "most powerful 18v angle grinder" on their website. Its not even brushless... Still, it looks like it had a decent amount of power. The worst part about it is the whole tool is bin fodder when the brushes wear out. A replacement motor is about £60!

Thank God for that. I do not know what Bosch were thinking of with this guard. I used to love Blue Bosch stuff, their SDS drills are normally superb. They bought a brand new 110v 4.5 inch grinder on site last week, today it has gone faulty! and it has had very little use. When you switch it on the speed of the grinder is not constant! I guess that will be going back for a warranty repair. Thanks for the comments

i have owned the 125vli for well over a year, yes agree bit fiddly but manageable, i carry a T handle allen key with me, awesome tool, quality goods, I have been playing with the idea of upgrading this to the new brushless bosch ag, gws18v-125sc, the one that has the chip, but as of yet can't get my head round the expence! i myself cannot justify £225 for the bare tool and lboxx, may wait another 12mths let the tech get better before shelling out, tight fisted northerner haha. also in 1-2yrs the tech and prices will be much better, bit like the AAA cars of today, lol.

Dewalt has the best guard, mine is ratcheting. You just turn it where you want and it clicks into place, with no tools or clips.

Bad design, better not requiring a tool at all. In terms of safety a user is likely to not bother getting the guard in the right place for each job or worse remove the guard altogether when it such a faff to change its position.

Absolutely. There are quite a few videos on KZbin where people have removed the guards and it makes me cringe! Some people just have no idea how dangerous these grinders can be! Thanks for the comment ;-)

Just leave the screw untightened. No need to permanently affix the guard. That click system should be ample. I think this is where Bosch was going with this. I can only hope

With the screw loose- you still can't adjust the guard, unless you remove the disk. We got a new Bosch 110V grinder on site a few weeks back, the guard on that is brilliant, you just press a tab with your thumb and you can turn it to any position- but now they have changed the switch, so you have to hold it on all the time. The switch is on the inside of the grinder (facing down), which means when you are grinding, you have to twist your hand around to hold the switch on! I'm sure someone at Bosch is trying to wind people up, first a totally useless guard, now the most annoying switch in history! Thanks for the comment

Yes, but it is a pile of junk. We just got a brand new Bosch grinder at work (110v) and to position the guard you simply press a lever and position it, none of the messing about like you have to do with this guard. Thanks for the comment

I hope you don't use it without the guard as it is very dangerous. Just do a Google image search for angle grinder accident and you will see what can happen when a disc shatters. Thanks for the comment ;-)

Absolutely, which is why I bought one for myself as I thought the one on site had been damaged but like you say this must be normal. There was one comment about them making that noise due to the 4 pole motor and magnets used in the grinder! Thanks for the comment ;-)

I've just bought one - and I've had to come here to find out how the hell to even fit the guard. Those lugs are COMING OFF. A guard that rigid is beyond a nuisance and getting into being a guard that is unsafe. I bought mine because I already have a set of 18V Bosch tools and batteries. If you aren't already tied into Bosch, don't buy this, get something else.

Do you know what's more annoying than this guard ? It's the disc nut. Change it with this here www.screwfix.com/p/bosch-sds-clic-quick-locking-angle-grinder-nut-m14/48287# You dont need your wrench anymore. For the price the Grinder is awesome. Usually a yellow one is much more expensive. But if you what more power, you could buy Bosch new 18v brushless Angle Grinder they coming up this year. Just google: Bosch GWS 18v 125 sc. The new Grinder has a different guard where you just press a button to turn it.

Because new engineers come into some company and try to fix/improve something that DOES NOT need improving!! It's not only with Bosch. I've noticed that a range of things from software to appliances to tools suffer from these problems. Something works perfectly then someone decides to "improve" it to worse.

So all the Bosch angle grinders have that horrible feel on turning ? I thought they got mine at DragonPoopSale . I bought that POS in an unguarded moment and have regretted it since. Who has the ethics of VW & prices of BMW ? Hint : I won't be buying another Bosch, not in this lifetime.

Mine failed within a couple of hours use, suspected the switch, but it was the service centre. Sent it to bosch who quoted 90 quid. Im done with them, not professional quality at all. I have sent (blue)bosch drills chargers jigsaws and grinders back,I didnt bother with their self destructing pad sander, just replaced it with a makita.The amount of marketing they do would be money better spent on improving design and quality, same goes for festool and milwaukee. Extensive experience leads me elsewhere, (almost anywhere else).

If you had asked me 20 years ago, which is my favourite brand of power tools, I would have said Bosch blue. They used to have a motto, which was something like “I would rather lose money, than trust”. Sadly, that is no longer the case! There are now much better power tool manufacturers in the market!
