Bosch VE Pump: Governor mod, timing spring, and how it all works!

Olly splits open his VW 1.6L NA fuel pump to show you whats inside, how it works, and how to make it more powerful.
This will make any stock 1.6L a beast. No more foot on the floor trying to go 70 mph, instead, snappy throttle response & lots of fuel!

According to the forums the best result is to shim the main spring 5mm. Wont affect/change drivability characteristics and give the added fuel you desire in the higher rpms. Ill practice on a core pump i have and then try it on my td pump in the future

One thing to make sure, when you put the linkage back in, make sure you put it back in correctly/rotated in the right direction. If you put it in the wrong way, it can cause runaway as soon as the engine is started.

For a daily fast driver i would probably just put 2-3 washers on to make the spring harder. and marking the shaft in relation to the lever saves a lot of guessing, Just my 2 cents looking forward to seeing how it drives

Marking it would've been clutch 😔 hindsight is always 20/20 lol. Fortunately I had the other pump to check against.

I did the three washer method. It didn't seem to make any difference? I think I have to replace my injectors. 2 seem to be leaking..is that a good reason for not much change?

This might be a noob question but isnt changing to a bigger plunger just the same as increasing fuel supply on the max power fuel screw? For exemple, a 10mm with increased fuel screw would deliver the same fuel as 11mm with stock fuel screw no? Thanks

Hi! Good question. I didn't understand this till recently... Technically you're correct. A 9mm pump with the power screw cranked down can deliver (volumetrically speaking) the same amount as a 10mm plunger with a minimum setting (hypothetically here bc I've never measured output volume). BUT, the period in which the 9mm injects that fuel will be WAY longer for the same volume than the 10mm because you are increasing fuel delivery by increasing injection duration 🫡 the more you turn the power/fuel screw the longer the control collar covers the spill ports 👍 thus a 10 or 11mm plunger provides crispy injection events & lots of fuel. Also idt my 9mm maxed out could touch the 11mm on a low setting 💁

I find the engine's want to get up and go drops off at about 4,000 RPM enough that it makes you want to shift anyways - valve float is still reasonably far off 😁
