Bose Noise Cancelling Earbuds on a motorcycle

This is probably one the most dramatic add-ons for rider comfort I have purchased next to heated gear. These are the Bose Quiet Comfort 20 Noise Cancelling Earbuds. I used them with my Cardo Q3, (which I show in the video) , but you could plug them directly into your iPhone to get music, or nothing at all to simply get noise cancelling (although plain ole' earplugs can do that).
Cardo is one of the most popular brands of motorcycle intercom/ audio systems. Although I refer to this as an intercom system, I really just use it for music and phone communication (and Nav direction when travelling).
This is a great duo.

Chris; First thanks for the video it has had me researching this because after 40 years of riding my ears are the priority when choosing equipment. The popping you hear is the Bose becoming "overwhelmed" with too much wind noise with your slightly too loose Arai helmet (around 93 db) I would suggest trying a Shoei Neotec 2 or a Schuberth C3 pro both at around 82 Db will be in the range the Bose can work better with plus as modular much easier to put on and off.

Hey there, thank you so much for the video, I wanted to leave a review of my experience with these Bose earbuds Because of the info you provided I ordered a pair of the exact same noise canceling Bose ear buds and tried on my ride this evening. I ride a very loud Yamaha Road Star 1700cc with a full face Shoei Qwest Helmet and full large windshield. This bike on the freeway over 60MPH is crazy loud and the low-frequency volume was leaving me with bad ringing in my ears. I have been trying everything possible to reduce the low-end volume when riding on the freeway. I have used the foam earplugs with 35db Max reduction, the No Noise gel earbuds and last week received a new special titanium ear buds system called Isolate Pro - but unfortunately no real success - All these worked to reduce the higher frequencies but nothing would reduce the crazy loud low-end vibrating roar over 60mph - After trying the Bose this evening, I thought I found the perfect system - when I started the engine I almost couldn't tell if the bike was actually running! But once I hit the freeway over 50mph, the digital popping you mentioned that sounds like your ears adjusting in a plane was happening every 15-30 seconds (even with full face Shoei helmet with visor closed and bike windshield) I pulled over and tried re-inserting the ear buds multiple times but the same loud popping result kept occurring over 50MPH.... so disappointed because below 50 mph they worked perfectly. Maybe my bike is just too loud, I'm thinking about getting a BMW GS1200 for long distance touring and maybe this will work better with the smaller engine .... sorry for the lengthy comment but thought it might help out some other fellow bikers.

Thank you for sharing your experience, and more importantly the detail of your setup. Researchers have suggested that many riders quit or avoid riding because of wind noise, and this aversion is subconscious. I am fully aware of my dislike of noise, and i fight with it constantly, trying many different solutions to find what works best. I think your shield may be contributing to the turbulence that your helmet and ear protection are trying to fight. Regardless, I hope you find a solution. If you are considering changing bikes, and are looking at the BMW lineup, wait for the rider test day that happens at most dealers every year. In fact, call you nearest dealer and book a ride on the following bikes-- K16GT and GTL , R12RT, and the GS. Bring along your buds and lid. It will be a long day as the test rides can be an hour each, but you will get a really good idea as to whether they will fit the bill in wind management. Furthermore, regarding shields, I have just done a review on a tall touring windshield that is basically allowing me to ride in completely turbulent free air.

Thanks for the reply Chris, I wrote Bose an email and the tech replied suggesting it was the wind noise in the helmet. Too bad beacuse below 50mph the noise cancelling was amazing before the constant loud popping sound. Anyway I had the same thought about reqesting a test ride this week at my local BMW dealer and use the Bose earbuds. I hear the wind deflection on the GS1200 is extremly good, so maybe that will be the final solution! Safe riding brother! Will check out your windshield video too.

I have the same thing. I am pretty sure it has to do with pressure changes. I was wearing them when I got in my car one day, and the pop happened really loudly when I closed the door. I reopened the door to my car and closed it again. POP. Not sure how to stop it from happening, but with some low volume music it isn't very noticeable.

After watching your presentation I went out and bought a pair of these Bose QC 20's and I have to say I concur with everything you say about them. When properly fitted no other in-ear headphone compares to them for noise reduction. Prior to using these I was using a pair of Etymotic HF-3's which were very comfortable and provided great sound quality but the problem with all in ear headphones from a motorcyclists standpoint is that despite a perfect ear seal, if any of the cord is exposed to wind outside of the helmet or jacket you will get cord induced noise turbulence that travels along the cord direct to your inner ear. This can and does create ear damage. The electronics used by Bose in their noise cancelling process virtually eliminates this cord transmitted wind noise. The "pop" that you can hear is from a change in air pressure. Try sitting inside a car and then opening and closing the car door and you will recreate the same effect. There is little you can do about it, but as you say it is tolerable. One way to get around the problem of having the battery unit exposed to the elements is to buy an stereo mini jack extension cord. They are available in short lengths from Amazon & eBay. My cord is 12'' and allows me to store the control unit along with my I-phone in the top pocket of my riding jacket. Unlike you, I did have to modify the lining and the foam liner of my helmet in order to accommodate the extra bulk of the QC 20's - they do stick out more than any other earbud I have used in the past. I find that even the slightest pressure exerted by a helmet or liner on an earbud will create mild to moderate discomfort of a period of a couple of hours so its worth spending some time modifying your helmet to allow for them. As for sound quality, I would say they are on par with my Etymotic HF-3's but with somewhat enhanced bass. If your cell phone has a built in equalizer (my I-phone 5s does) then you can alter the sound curve to suit your own taste. I use my QC 20's with the new Sena S10 comm's system and have found this to be the perfect arrangement for me. Another plus is that you can hit the small button on the cord control to mute music and hear a conversation using the built in mike in the switch controller - great when you don't want to remove your helmet or ear buds. I tried my Bose QC20 earbuds a couple years ago with my half helmet and I wasn't happy with the noise reduction and went back to the orange disposables. After this video, I gave them another try with my Shoei RF-1200 on the morning commute and they worked great. Thanks for changing my mind about them as a motorcycle accessory.

On my very loud HD Dyna, the Bose QC-20 is plugged straight in to my phone. These expensive but incredible ear buds make the difference between pleasure and pain. Not needing to communicate with passengers or pals and relying on navigation apps that interrupt the music, this does the trick. Like others mentioned, with my RF-1200 Shoei, I simply put my thumbs on the ear buds and pull the helmet down over my ears. My thumbs inside holding the buds in place until the helmet is almost on and the buds are past the cushioning. I also have a double USB plug that I use to charge up both the phone and the earbuds during breaks. The phone stays in my jacket protecting the battery. The control button is handy right there at throat level...have never taken or made calls. Thanks for a great review.

I use this exact setup, Bose QC20 and Scala rider, it's amazing what those nose headphones do! Tip... get a 3.5mm jack extension, (roughly 0.5 metres long) then you can run the cord down inside your jacket to your inside pockets, where you can house the battery part of the headphones! So you can now use them in the rain too! 👍 (also, that battery won't be clattering around your helmet) Also, if you put a neck warmer tube thing on, they never fall out of your ears!

I use the same BOSE ear buds plugged into my Sena 20 which is Bluetooth connected to my phone and they work great (the best I have tried) as stated in the video. To get around the rain issue I also use an 3.5mm M-F extension cord between the Sena ear bud socket and the BOSE ear bud electronic unit which allows the the electronic unit to go in a pocket. This also greatly reduces the Bluetooth interference I had noticed when the Electronics unit is next to the Sena.

Yeah I vouch for the Bose Noise cancelling earbuds. I have been using them for the past 3 years now and they are just fantastic. I am on my second set now. You basically get addicted to them :-)

been using them for a couple of years. Best thing I ever did. Ducati 907 has massive wind noise from low fairing. tried custom audio moulded ear plugs , various foam ear plugs, nothing comes close. I use a Sena 20s as it has a 3.5mm jack and use a short extension so the flat control box sits inside jacket. I do get some ear popping in very high side winds. I cant hear a thing when riding with out ear plugs , so I don't feel safety is in any way compromised. In fact as fatigue is reduced on long rides I think its a benefit. Ridden in rain a lot with no issues. I use a Shuberth C3Pro helmet. Also great on planes as you can sleep on your side, where the over the ear headphones dig in. If you want ultimate plane comfort , use foam buds and noise cancelling over the top...what crying baby???

I too have a BMW K1600. I got a set of the Bose wired noise cancelling earbuds and it was an amazing experience. Blocks the majority of engine noise from my bike (high pitched whine) and my business partner's Harley with near straight pipes. As for the popping noise; I too experience this. I do not believe that this is pressure changes like others have said. I have done an experiment. Used this with a full face and a 3/4 helmet, moved the windshield up and down, close and far from other vehicles.... In my case, the popping (sounds like a heavy tap of a finger on the helmet, not too loud) is a reaction of the noise cancelling system to wind buffeting. It is more pronounced with the 3/4 helmet which exposes the system to more effects of buffeting. Also, if you pay close attention, you can pick the buffet that causes the 'confusion' of the noise cancelling system. Also notice that when there is a pop, it is also accompanied by a change in the remaining background sound volume. All of this is way quieter than the wind and engine noise you would be exposed to. I can listen to talk radio on the motorcycle's stereo at 85 MPH with no trouble using this system. Thank you for posting your experience so that we could all try this our selves and have a better MC experience.

I just returned these earbuds to the store. They are amazing at noise cancellation but unusable in a motorcycle helmet. I tried all the different sizes of ear molds and adjusted the padding/venting on my Shoei rf1200 helmet to better accommodate them but I experienced a recurring popping effect going any speed above 40 mph. I tried multiple configurations in 2 different helmets and couldn't fix it. These aren't designed for the constant changes in wind shear and pressure changes that occur inside a motorcycle helmet. They have their place, just not good for motorcycles. Also, they made my R1 with cat delete sound like a 50cc Chinese scooter! Totally ruined the engine note of my bike!

I know this a old video but I thought my input could help other. I ride a Honda CBR 600RR and didn't like the speakers on my Sena 20s. 1. For Sport bikes first upgrade is get a helmet that fits right, and is quieter than most. I have the Shoi RF-1200, cuts through wind great. 2. Upgrade your windshield to a double bubble. Yes it doesn't look epic on the bike but I commute on it and it puts the wind almost over my head when upright. No inssues in slight tuck. 3. Make sure your helmet cheeks pads are "fluffly". Any gaps between you helmet and ear will let wind noise in. See videos on proper wash for pads or buy newer ones. 4. You can either buy decent headphone and buy memory foam tips or go the route of the notice cancelling headphones. I stayed with the memory foam tips which work great. 5. Wearing a neck warmer or something that adds a layer between your neck an the helmet gaps works tremendously well. Wearing a snowboard like winter jackets that covers the helmet pretty high up are great. I don't have a summer jacket like that though so this option is not suitable all the time.

I have bought the same Bose earphone as in this video. I was experiencing constant popping of the earplugs (same as you experience with your own ears when going into a tunnel). It find this very annoying, so I decided to return the earplugs to Bose. Fortunately they give a 100 days not happy just return guarantee! I will step over to rubber earplugs and over ear headphones. I have been fighting excessive wind noise on my bike. The bike is a sport touring bike, and with a low windshield I get noise from the bottom of the helmet from the air at my chest and neck, and also noise from the top of my helmet. With a taller windshield the noise is only on top of my helmet. I have a Shoei GT Air that is supposed to be a quiet helmet and it works great on a naked bike or big touring bike - but on this bike it is noisy. Really good earplugs help and cut out most of the noise - but they also make my Sena useless for telephone calls, or as an intercom when my wife rides with me. If I turn up the speakers loud enough for me to hear them over the wind noise and earplugs - the other person gets horrible feedback from the overly loud speakers. I watched this video and decided it was worth a try - I bought factory reconditioned Bose units and saved a lot of money over buying new.....they looked new when I got them and I am satisfied with my purchase. I had a short windshield on the bike on my first ride and the wind coming off the top hits me in the chest. The Bose NC earbuds popped and clicked excessively - but the wind noise was less. I was disappointed that this was not working. When I got home I put on a taller windscreen that moves the airflow up to eye level and went for another ride. This time the earbuds worked perfectly and cut out almost all of the wind noise. I connected an MP3 player and I could hear music easily, and then I connected the Bose to my Sena and made a few telephone calls......I could hear the conversation very clearly even at 70 mph....I am stoked! My helmet is a snug fit and it is a bit of a challenge getting the helmet on - but I can do it and once on they work fine. Getting the helmet off is impossible if I leave the earbuds in - pulling the helmet up jams the earbuds deep into my ears. To get my helmet off I have to pull the helmet to once side and stick my fingers up inside the helmet and remove the earbud, then repeat for the other side. It is impossible for me to remove my helmet with the earbuds in place. I am going to try and mold some custom earplugs that fit these Bose units, and maybe that will make them a bit easier to use in my helmet. Thanks for the review. I absolutely love these!!! They are a lot of money ($425), but certainly worth it for enjoyment and ride comfort. Mine work great with a scorpion full face helmet, no pain on my ears or anything. I must say these didn't work on my old helmet which was a shark flip up model. Just be aware you're helmet may not suit earphones if they are too tight around the ears. I ride an MT 07 with a akrapovic db killer in and I can barely hear the noise (But enough to change gears etc). These also come with a song skipper and pause button that works with motorbike gloves- just perfect!!!

I use the Bose QC earbuds too. Usually I don't flip on the noise cancelling toggle unless I'm on the highway. You need to hear the road around you under normal city traffic conditions.

Hi Chris, I have a galaxy s5 phone. I also use the Bose qc20 earbuds while motorcycling. However, rather than using one of the helmet mounted bluetooth units, I use a Jensen JHD40bt stereo. If you GOOGLE Jensen heavy duty, you'll find that they make heavy duty, waterproof stereos, that are designed for outdoor activity, such as being mounted on a skid-steer loader, that has no cab, or in a powerboat. I little about this stereo, and why I selected it. First of all, I have a Yamaha fjr1300a super-sport touring motorcycle. I really enjoy taking long trips. did I say long trips? Last year I took a 5140 mile trip. This month, leaving on August 15th actually, I'm taking a 8000 mile trip around the U.S. Totally in agreement with you about blocking out noise, by the way. A GREAT stop-gap against fatigue. Hands down, I'd say. My stereo, although there's no intercom feature, which is immaterial to me since I travel alone, has 18 fm presets, 6 am presets, and guess what else it has... weatherband, and bluetooth. So basically I stream music and GPS instructions from my Galaxy s5 to the Jensen stereo, which I have my QC20 earbuds plugged into. The beauty of this is the amplification capability of the Jensen, which also has bass and treble adjustability. The Jensen unit is about 8" in length by about 4" in width by about 2.5 inches deep. So what this means is that, what I did was, I used the provided template for mounting the stereo, and cut a hole in the top of my tank bag, and by making a home made thick phenolic backing plate for the stereo, I installed it in the top of my tank bag. One big advantage to this is that the control unit for my Bose buds are plugged into a jack that I wired into the Jensen. The Bose being none waterproof is inside my tank bag, plugged into a power source(by the way), since I frequently will ride for ten hours on a long trip. The stereo sound quality is Bose fantastic, and since I'm a 56 year old aircraft mechanic, my hearing is not what it was. So the output quality and adjustability of the Jensen, makes this setup great. A whole lot of fun, Pandora, loaded music and books on my phone, plus radio and weatherband.

I too like to ride with earbuds in... albeit not the super expensive Bose brand, but hey to each his own (lol)! I however, will look into the Cardo system... was considering a Sena 30k but you might have sold me on something more practical for my useage; Because, I want to be able to hear my music, answer my phone, and communicate with at least 1-2 more riders. I Have that exact pair of Bose Noise canceling earbuds. I use them all the time on my BMW K1600GT on Cross County Rides, they greatly reduce fatigue, and road noise is all but eliminated. In some States it's illegal to use earbuds on a Motorcycle, and in heavy traffic I like to hear the sounds around me so I take them off and switch to the bikes speakers.

Thanks for the videos! I too purchased the Bose headset for my Sena 20s while Riding a BMW 1600gt. Unfortunately, the newest Bose quiet comfort is now 100% Bluetooth and one cannot plug into the Sena Port. It now goes around your neck. Bose no longer sells the unit which you are discussing on your video. In fact more and more companies are going 100% Bluetooth. Sena and others may need to change their wireless hookups as the technology advances . I watch all your videos and have mirrored my bike and style to yours.

I use the Bose QC20 Ear Buds with great success, along with the new Cardo PACKTALK Slim. I discovered that you can securely slide the Bose battery pack UNDER the rear Cardo battery pack. It's amazing! The Bose battery pack no longer hangs down from the helmet; which can cause stress on the wiring. I can easily remove the Bose battery pack for charging, and can use the ear buds for other purposes. Make sense? BTW, great job on your video.

Thanks for the excellent and clear video. I want to look into this option. The constant wind noise is an issue for me as well. I've got a pair of "NoNoise" ear plugs that work well. However, can you hear traffic (i.e. cars, horns, sirens, etc.) while the noise reduction headphones are on? Do you think there is a safety concern regarding your reduced audio awareness to roadway conditions? Thanks..

I can still hear horns, sirens and other important sounds perfectly clear. What the headphones do is mute all the wind noise drastically and other sounds mildly. When all this happens, your ears become more sensitive to acute sounds.

Try using Shure earbuds they have a wire version and a wireless similar to the old Beats however they fit inside the ear do not rip your ears apart when your taken your helmet on and on they will change your life

I haven't been able to locate a Bose 20 for android. Will the ISO / Apple units work? I did try a Bose ultra wireless but the controls were constantly activated by the slightest movement of the helmet. I also haven't found a Cardo Q3, and haven't seen one with the input you show. Still searching...

So if these earbuds are no better than the cheap orange foam plugs, why not just use the foam plugs along with the in-helmet speakers that come withe the Cardo, and save $250?? I had heard the Bose earbuds were better than foam at reducing low frequency noise.

ZioN DannY the simple answer is that the speakers are both low sonic quality and lack volume to overcome the normal wind noise. These earphones have great sound quality.

this didn't work for me, so I gave my QC20 to my wife, and she loves them.. I find the 32 or 33 rated ear plugs works best for me. I've positioned my 20s speakers closer to my ear, and I can heart them perfectly

What is stupid is that I've had my Bose Earbuds for 3 years and never thought to try them on the bike. They are fantastic. On my VFR1200X I get no wind noise until 160kph and no engine noise. I have a thought for you. Could you pull out the speaks from a Over the ear NC headset like the Bose QC 25 and use them as helmet speakers?

Rob Bessell , I like your line of thinking. 15 years ago I tried on a set of bose nc over-ear headphones. Until I got my in-ear models I was researching a way to incorporate my over-ear ones into my helmet. A little research led me to a few folks who have successfully done it. They disassemble the headphones and build them into their helmet so you get the effect without having to plant earbuds into your ears. I believe ,like you perhaps, that it would be a better option than the buds. However... Sena has announced that they will be releasing a helmet with the intercom and noise cancelling all built in. It will be called the Sena INC helmet. It was supposed to be released last year, then this past spring, and still no news. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

My helmet is tight also, but with my qc20's, what I do is pull the helmet using the straps, sort of apart, just to crush the foam, and that allows me to finagle the helmet on, without the buds coming out.

I got the same Bose quietcomfort 20 noise cancelling ear buds I’ve purchased to try and reduce wind noise on my x14 helmet .. only used them once, they would be perfect but I think the microphone picks up some wind noise and causes some cracking and popping sounds at speeds past 90km , while riding if I put my left hand under my right side of my jaw it’s totally quiet so that leads me to think that my wind noise is coming from underneath my cheek pad and my hand reflects the wind 🤷‍♂️even purchased bigger cheek pads but doesn’t help ..

+jollyroger475 absolutely -- otherwise they are simply earbud headphones. Fortunately, any "brick and mortar" type retailers will allow you to test them in person. If you are considering, i would seriously go and try a set. even in the store you will be surprised how well they do. These Bose buds will also work as noise cancelling earplugs without being plugged into a device (phone, iPod, mp3 player, etc.).

J, I can attest to the NC capability. You might want to read my post above. Plus you'll hear sounds in the music, that you wouldn't hear from a lot of earbuds. In short, the Bose sound quality is very good.

I love my Bose noise cancelling ear buds but they send some kind of popping noise to my Sena that I don't hear but my fellow Sena riders pickup. Lucky I do most of my riding by myself as I would hate to give them up. Not sure if I can do anything to stop the interference?

Hi Chris, thanks for more one of your nice videos that I really appreciate. Two questions; what about sound quality. Good bass? I'm asking this because one of the things that I miss on my system (Autocom with a wire) is the poor sound quality. The second question, when riding for some time do you feel uncomfortable with them? Both good questions. As good as the sound is, it is not as good as Autocom. It is , however, the best i have heard from one of these wireless systems. They are very comfortable, but eventually (for me about 6 hours) , they can become uncomfortable simply because they are in your outer ear canal. Ideally, an over-the-ear system integrated into the helmet would be an amazing solution to noise on a bike.

Hi Chris, I was talking of the sound quality of the Bose earplugs, not te sound of the Cardo. Quit frankly I don't think that the Autocom is much better. Besides the annoyance of the cable, the sound lacks bass. I understand your point of view regarding comfort usage. Even with the over-the ear of the Autocom system I notice some fatigue after some ride time. I have the BMW EVO VI, probably I have big ears :-)

In most states it is illegal to wear earphones while riding, especially noise cancelling ones. I almost kicked myself because today I bought the Bose over-ear noise cancelling headphones, instead of the earbuds, not thinking about how valuable they could be while riding. Then I looked up the laws. I'd hate to be pulled over and have to take off my helmet just to get a ticket for having these in. Guess I'll keep the ones I bought instead of returning them for the noise cancelling earbuds.

if you dont want music or phone calls ,then you are absolutely correct, with one caveat -- I have found that some helmets have padding that presses well into my ear , and if that padding rubs on the earplug, it can create noise that is very loud (try rubbing your finger on an earplug when its inserted). So when i wear earplugs (i use the orange ones) , i make triple sure they are well inserted away from the helmet padding.

Good question as Im in a no helmet law state and say what you want but I enjoy riding free with no helmet unless it' a long interstate ride. I have used LG around the neck 730 series ear buds for years and they...when paired with the right fitting buds...have worked pretty well. But the volume isn't enough to hear much on the highway. I have been searching for recommendations on "in ear Bluetooth headsets for motorcycle riding" for a long time and every result seems to incorporate some system for use with helmets. If I find something....I will post it specifically for earbuds on motorcycles without a helmet.

@@kiki231000 They work just as well as I have both and the advantage with the wireless ones, they work off Bluetooth and work great for your phone or music, I shall try connecting them using Bluetooth and update you in due course to see if they connect with my helmet coms. I use the Interphone Tour pack that works great with my small group of riders. But I do think you may have to have the wired version as I do not believe there is an audio out for Bluetooth?

I was amazed to learn that in US there are places where it's illegal to use earphones (especially noise-cancelling designs) when riding. Can you confirm....earPHONES or any type of earBUDS? In other words, is it legal to use earbuds to protect your hearing, but illegal to use earphones to listen to music or take phone calls? I cannot confirm , i have only simply based my comments on the countless statements made by various folks in various states. I would advise you to take a moment to research all the different regulations in each state or province you plan on visiting. Some laws might surprise you , and , unfortunately, ignorance of them is not a defense. Some of the earbud and headphone laws came about over the years in certain areas. I remember traveling through southern Florida in the early 80's , when a cassette deck in a car was a luxury; many had just an AM radio. a cheap alternative was to buy a Sony Walkman, with the small foam earphones, and wear them while driving. Everybody would commute into work with a Sony Walkman headset on . Too many folks turned up the volume , and couldn't hear traffic , sirens, horns, etc. (or so some people thought) . Regulators blamed the subsequent accidents on the headphones, and some states acted quickly, not always fully informed.

dennis B this is a good question and I think it boils down to individual anatomy. My helmet is otherwise very tight, and the plugs do get pulled out a tad but I can reach in and push them back in tight.

i use the bose qc30s ( no wires just hangs over neck) on a s1000xr and they are very good at isolating and reducing the buffet/wind noise whilst at the same time allowing the sound of the engine/exhaust and general traffic to filter through. I want to use an intercom system whilst keeping my qc30s ...........do you know or anyone reading this if i can use the bluetooth pairing system from the bose to connect to the bluetooth unit of a sena/scarla/fodsport ? I would use the mic from the intercom system and speakers from my bose via bluetooth ??

I can assure you that I am using a properly fitted lid. I was fitted by the Aria folks directly, and although it may appear loose, I can confirm that it is actually quite snug. That being said, there are folks like you that cannot fit earbuds under a helmet. Currently this is a mute point for the Bose models, since they are all bluetooth based now, and won't work in the situation shown.

No -- i would say more than 50%. However-- that is purely subjective. The easiest analogy would be say that the noise reduction is similar to wearing a very aggressive earplug-- the bright orange disposable ones.

Hi Chris, I own a pair of qc30's and have thought about this option, but since the noise cancelling system works by not actually stopping any sound from entering the ear, but instead by sending back inverted frequencies to drown out the ambient noise, I'm worried about the dangers of hearing loss. Right now I can't go over 140 km/h for longer periods of time (highway touring) WHILE wearing earbuds, without being left with a ring in my ears for a couple of hours. What's your experience with these earphone and the sound it actually stops?

Sebastian de Leeuw that’s a thinkers question, it might be worth your while to research the technology with Bose. But I can tell you that the two waves cancel each other out which is why you do not hear the noise. Your ear is not experiencing twice the noise. What you sense you hear is what your ears are receiving. But don’t take my word for it, there are researchers who have published a lot of info on this. In fact it is a recommended solution in pure hearing safety situations.

Hi Chris, I called Bose today, as well as 3 other companies that deal with hearing protection in The Netherlands, where I live. Every single one of them told me that there is no way the active noise cancelling earphones could ever replace real hearing protection plugs, since they are not fitted with filters. So although your brain is 'fooled' by the ambient sound waves being drowned out, all of the waves are still reaching the ear drum and could very well cause the exact same hearing damage as riding without any protection. Industrial grade active noise cancelling solutions are apparently always worked into isolating ear muffs, or fitted with filters. I couldn't find any conclusive research reports on this.. I'd be hesitant to use them, but are you saying you haven't had any noticeable problems because of wind or engine noise?

Sebastian de Leeuw you are correct in that the technology does not replace a conventional filter for the reason presented. But Bose pitches their NR as a safety product to the aviation industry. And I personally was recommended it by an audiologist. That’s all I can say. You may want to review true published scientific papers on the subject and decide for yourself. My hearing, after 35 years is still excellent.

I assume you aren't joking when you ask that question, and you have never ridden a bike at highway speeds with (or without) a fairing. A fairing is the large piece of bodywork on the front of the bike that protects your upper body from the wind and has a windshield mounted in it. Since wind and related turbulence is a major source of noise at speed, the existence and design of the fairing is a critical factor in its control. Try driving a "naked" bike on the highway, then try a few "faired" bikes -- compare.

my best combination presently is my Schuberth C4 , with the SC1A installed and foam earplugs. The Bose still does the best job of killing sound, but as i ride longer and longer they become uncomfortable (8 to 12 hours of saddle time)

He's right you know. It went on way too easily, and look how much lateral movement you have there. Your cheeks should be moving with the helmet as you twist it side-to-side. I'm also not a fan of intercom systems hanging off the side of helmets, especially after companies like Arai make so much of an effort to provide an even radius around the entire helmet to disperse impact as much as possible. You land on that Scala and you're getting a hot spot of impact right there.

Chris On the Street​ Like the Belgian law that says you now have to be covered up while riding for protection, but makes no requirement as to what that clothing is? So, you can ride in silk pyjamas if you like. I would like a word with the guy getting paid tax payers money to come up with that. Or how about the guy who passed the law requiring that a motorcycle only have one headlight, so reducing it's visibility to other vehicles and reducing the efficiency of the lights at night? I would really like to have a word with that law maker, and how he came to the conclusion that twin lights were a problem? And the guy who decided that a motorcyclist can have nothing in his ears, be it a phone/ gps headset or protection from wind noise? What studies were done to justify the claim that the rider would not hear an ambulance, and who dismissed the fact that riding without protection will deafen you? Yup, I would really like to speak to that guy and see what studies were done. The answer of course, will be nothing at all.

+Jonny X Yes, unfortunately they aren't cheap. And to make matters worse, I AM cheap-- very cheap. So ponying up this kind of cash is like pulling teeth. Sony makes a noise cancelling earbud set for considerably less. I have heard mixed reviews on them, but some love them, and that may be a less expensive option. One continuing comment i get on most of my equipment videos is the price of some of this stuff. So why would a self proclaimed cheapo buy the top dollar stuff? I would answer that like this: For me, when i am riding for 6 or 8 hours strait, and my head is starting to ache from the noise, 300 bucks doesn't seem so much. Same goes for some of the apparel: since riding is one of my treasured pastimes in a very hectic and at times challenging career, that spills into 60 hour weeks, i want to be as absolutely comfortable and safe as possible. To your comment, the frustration you and i both have is the fact that this noise technology has not come down in price like every other technology out there.

If you're not paying attention to your environment when it warrants it, then you shouldn't be fiddling with other things; that's how you die. If you are aware and you know you can perform an action safely then there's no problem. I've texted while driving, had phone calls too, all at times when I'm really positive I'm not going to die by a judgement of a lot of different factors. If you do anything negligently you're going to risk yourself to the highest potential possible. If you actually do some risk assessment and know your own capabilities, honestly know your own capabilities then it becomes a matter of "Am I able to sacrifice brief moments of my attention right now with little to no risk?" I know when I can I say no to that question. The problem is when you overestimate your own capabilities.
