I see this is a very old video, but i have the exact same problem with my bose 321. The only difference is that there is no damage to my traces and it looks like the solder melted off of the connection. I dont have much knowledge of electronics but i do own a soldering iron. My question is should i be worried about that huge black capacitor if im just going to put a little solder on that pin from the power plugin? I dont want to die trying to get this thing working again.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids Жыл бұрын
The capacitor is not going to hold a charge after it is unplugged. This warning was valid with old vacuum tube equipment where the capacitors could hold a charge for a period of time but with solid state there is always a load present that will discharge. The only exception. Is swit Jing power supplies if the oscillator is not running as if not then the chopper transistors are not running and the main filter can retain a charge. If the oscillator is running however that will discharge the main filter in a few seconds. If in doubt short a screwdriver between the pins of the capacitor to discharge if it is holding any energy.
@Jjomz99
@Jjomz99 Жыл бұрын
@@12voltvids ok so I should be safe. The capacitor pins are not accessible from the top off the board since there seems to be glue sealing the capacitor to the top side. Could I discharge it by bridging a screwdriver to the pins that protrude through the bottom of the board? Would that be effective? Also is that large black capacitor a 350v or did I decipher the code on it wrong? Thank you for the feedback by the way
@12voltvids
@12voltvids Жыл бұрын
When it's unplugged it's going to discharge anyway but yes you can do it from the bottom side just short the pins.

I also changed the IRZ44N but the BOSE 321 is not heard. Observing with details I saw that the R10 was overheated. I also replaced it but it burned right away. Do you have any idea what it could be? Thank you so much!

@@12voltvids someday you will have to disassemble and work in the transformer/ballast of that lamp to fix that humming .. maybe it is not the transformer/ballast core........ maybe it is just a loose screw or a loose piece of can in the lamp chassis what it makes that humming .......... if it is the transformer core.. well tighten the screws in the corners or put some metal brackets in between those screws.... so they squeeze evenly the entire outer surface of the core... is what you usually see in amplifiers transformers ..... ....... Another "mexican" or actually Argentinian solution i know...... is to immerse a quarter of the transformer in light half diluted wood varnish...... wait a couple of minutes... let it filter in between the core sheets..(if you have a Pressure Pot/Vacuum Chamber to force the varnish to filter in.. even better)..... submerge it a bit more... let it filter..... and so on until it is all submerged... leave it for a couple of hours... take it out... and let it drain/dry for a couple of days... the varnish will get between the vibrating blades.. sealing them or acting as a shock absorber...... this would also solve it.. if it is the windings the ones that vibrate ... that's why you sometimes see some transformers that are completely varnished.. all its surface even the core and the the windings ....

If a unit caused a fire, you bet they would recall it, but if it just sparked a bit and went out not a chance.PCboards these days are fire resistant, so the chances of a fire resulting is quite low. This did happen to Zenith back in the 80's. Several house fires and a few deaths and they ended up recalling many system 3 TVs to have the horizontal sweep module replaced with an improved version. The difference? The new version had a fireproof shock shield. The original ones had a piece of what looked like cardboard covering the bottom of the board to protect a technician should his hand go where it shouldn't, around the pins of the flyback, linearity coil ect. The problem was the linearity coil had a solder connection problem, and if it let go it drew a good size arc around it, which in a few cases ignited the shield and caused a fire. I believe there were 5 fires caused and then there was a recall issued. Everyone was told not to watch the TV until the set was serviced. I forget how many horizontal modules I swapped but it was several hundred in a short period of time. All the defects were returned to the factory for examination, repair, and re-issue for more sets. Only difference I could see was a shield made out of fire retardant plastic and the connections around the horizontal linearity coil, yoke plug, and flyback were all beefed up.

He he, ya! these are NOT WORTH $1000. I worked for Bose for about 25 years. Engineered in the US, IMPORTANT "Assembled in Mexico. PC boards are made in SC or CHINA!!! Speakers (Woofers and tweeters) made in Mexico. Power output is about 150 watts RMS, but into very low resistance speakers. Sounds like 500 watts. Very very loud, and very very clear sound. The first 3-2-1 systems are very defective. Ask me why and I will tell the story of the first Bose DVD players. BAD SYSTEM, stay away. 12voltvids, very good video! I enjoyed this a lot. You are right! That cable has been in contact with a wall or other hard surface.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 9 жыл бұрын
You are right they are not WORTH that kind of money, but that is what retailers are selling them for! I worked in retail for over 20 years. We sold those units and others. They can claim whatever power they want, as there are many ways to measure it, but only 1 is the correct way, and that is true RMS. Not program power, or IPP which measures 1 cycle on a single channel. That power supply can't put out enough power to drive it to 150 watts. The power I quoted is the rating of the amplifier into low impedance. I wouldn't own any of those products myself. Right now I am using a 30+ year old Luxman LV103 (overhauled in another video on the channel) as my power amp in my studio. It has a pair of original 30+ year old triode tubes in it that give it a nice warm sound. My amp is a real made in Japan unit. You don't see that anymore.

Man you guys don't know you're born in the US/Canada... In Europe, we started off with stuff made in Britain or Germany... all good stuff... Japanese and Korean... yeah no problems with that either... even the 1990s gear made in Poland and Hungary was spot on really... then we got the Turkish crap... oh dear. In fairness it's a lot better than it was, but the early stuff was terrible! I've not seen much Mexican gear, only Cisco network gear which is really well made, but then it wants to be at $30,000 or more really :-)
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 9 жыл бұрын
+Jason james Ok over here on this side of the pond we used to see Canadian and USA made gear that was very good quality. The US plants mostly moved to Mexico, and that would have been RCA and Zenith of the day. The Japanese stuff was also very good, and the early Korean stuff was fairly close in quality. Most of the Japanese and Korean TV manufactures moved their plants to Mexico, and there was a drop in quality. For computer parts Taiwan has been good. Some stuff made in China has been OK, and other stuff terrible. I have a few things made in Vietnam, and they were cheaply made. A scanner that only scanned about 50 photos before crapping out. There is stuff still made in Canada/USA and it is very good, but it is also expensive. I have some Canadian made Blackberry phones, boards made in Canada, assembled in Mexico, and they have the best build quality I have seen in a cell phone. My daughter just got the new Android Blackberry Priv, Canadian made, assembled in Mexico, build quality first rate. Mind you she bought hers direct (not through a carrier) and paid a small fortune for it. For what it cost it better be built well.

+Amy Marie I used to cheat" and just scrape back the burnt portion and stick a big blob of solder on the pin, as you described, but my experience has shown me that these type of connections are the weak point in the first place, so adding some reinforcement is the way to go. The wire leads ad some flex when the power cord is inserted and removed. Most well manufactured products will have 2 wires attached to the power plug and those wires soldered to the board for stress relief. Power connectors attached in this manner is a constant source of problems. When I was working in a warranty depot we would mod common failure connections just like I did on this one to prevent repeat failures. For a paying customer, which this was I want to make sure it isn't turning into a boomerang.

You're right they didn't make the parts they put the parts on the board and didn't solder them correctly so they failed. Every company that moved assembly to Mexico had an immediate drop in reliability and 99% traces to shoddy soldering. Zenith, Sony, RCA, lg, and Samsung. The Korean made Samsung tvs are all still going strong. The Mexican assembled units not so much. Same with lg.
