I really want to visit Sarajevo in the near future. My urbanism teacher in university told us that this is his favourite city. I loved how you explained everything in very neutral way and I almost 100% positive that most people from Bosnia nowadays have no problem with the other ethnic groups. Anyways, pozdrav iz Bugarska!

Hey hey from Adelaide, Australia. I enjoyed your video. I remember when the shit went down in your part of the world while in high school. Although what was going on at the time was going over my head, but what stood out at the time is that we had a bunch of refuges suddenly showed up out of no where in our classes at the height of the events. They were dealing with a level of PTSD of one degree or an other, but overall cool people.

Its very hard to claim that Hungarian rule was harsher than Ottoman especially when you take danak u krvi into account and its also hard to claim that someone can chose who will conquer their land. And its not really true that Bosnia didnt put up a fight against Ottomans after all Bosnian king Tvrtko sent his troops to fight in Kosovo battle

I wouldnt go that far to say that Austrian rule was fair and good but it was somewhat better than Ottoman. Story about kmet Siman by Ivo Andric explained that there was not some huge difference. About Bosniaks fighting for Austria in WW1 i am not sure what kind of numbers are we talking about? I know that there were many Croats in their army but very few Serbs and some other nations like Czechs and Slovaks were very disloyal and unhappy in Austrian army.

Varna Mapper Most definitely. There are a few villages in Bulgaria that have been settled by Bosniak settlers/refugees during the ottoman era. Also, little known fact in Bulgaria is that one of the reasons to rush the April uprising, was not only that they caught a lot of revolutionaries, but also because there was massive uprising in Bosnia and the Bulgarian leaders wanted to make even harder for the ottomans to get to there, since the quickest route was through Bulgaria.

In the 18. , 19. century there was a need to make a demographic map of people on Balkan, and many Balkan people got their surnames from the places they lived or by the cultural group they said they belong to. Before that, people usualy got their surnames from the names of their heads of families or fathers...

I dont think so. Becouse the term Bosniak when we talk about nationality or ethnicity is relativlly new.The surname Bosnjak is most common with Croats but there are many Serbian(ortodox) families with that surname probably some Bosniaks have that surname too. Most likley that surname comes from south of todays Bosnia and Herzegovina.

About the term Bosniak: "Bošnjak" - it was used till II WW mostly in Croatia, Serbia, and Monte Negro. Mostly it was used as a surname for people who immigrated from Bosnia to those countries. - after late 80's early 90's same term is used mostly for Muslims in Bosnia and Herzegovina "Bosanac" - is a widely used but unformal name for people who were born in Bosnia. It becomes very popular in the mid-'70s. Mostly because of very popular song: "Tako ti je mala moja kad ljubi Bosanac" by rock band "Bijelo dugme" kzbin.info/www/bejne/anqwhWuCgaqtmqs

28:12 Actually, Bosnia was under Ottoman rule until about 1910 or 1912, where it was briefly independent before being absorbed into Austria-Hungary for a short rule of about 8 years until it was under the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats (or whatever it was called before being called Yugoslavia.) The thing is, when most people think of Austria-Hungary, they think of it’s WW1 borders. So um.. thank you, I was just nitpicking.

14:00 Thats why you use cyrillic, my dude. Brc^ko --> Бръчко. There is the ъ letter, thats read kind of like the english "uh" sound, except not as pronounced. Its a sound that all the slavs have, but I think only the bulgarians write it down? And when you skip it, you get words that westerners are confused by. At least you aren't as bad as Poland, things get spooky there, even as a slav I can't read a lot of the words they write down.

Bogomils was a small sect which mainly disappeared by the time when Ottoman came to Bosnia&Herzegovina. Sarajevo and Bosniaks have their own history and want to explain their conversion to Islam with Bogomils which is funny and not true.

And Bogumils were not Bosnian church because there were Bogumils in Serbia too, and they basically originate from Bulgaria. Basically, they were something like vegan "don't kill any living being" christians who didn't actually have priests or temples, and who devoted themselves to living with the least material belongings possible. And I do not believe that they transitioned to Islam, because, for example, they were prosecuted and murdered in Serbia by Nemanjici because they did not want to transition to meat-eating and material-possetions-worshiping religion (orthodox Christianity) and Islam is pretty much the same.

_I hope this comment doesn't look too long..._ I agree about the Bogomils(in addition - they came from Bulgaria) and thanks to Bosnia that saved a lot of them(because one shitty Bulgarian tsar with name Boril[he was weak ruler] killed lots of them). But in my opinion it isn't necessary to believe in Islam to be Boshnyak. Actually I think that Bosnia and Croatia are very close like culture(Idk, I would say even same - because before Ottoman yoke you both were Catholic[and a bit Bigomilic in Bosnia😂]). I don't hate the Serbs(just their politics was agressive...) because they are orthodox brothers of us the Bulgarians(no matter - both Bosnian and Croats AND Serbians are Christians originally). But yes, I am very confused - In one ideal World there would be united and orthodox Bosnian and Croats(I don't hate Catholics by the way, only *radical* Muslims).

Man, that ”Brcko” sounds like there is no vowel there and actually it is not, but that î/â sound/vowel which you forget. The Romanian can only come to your help, especially thanks to that î/â vowel, therefore the tormented in latin alphabet, ”Brcko” can maybe become ”Brâchko/Brîchko”. I can only suppose, but you are struggling so hard with the Latin alphabet, its a pain here for me. You can NOT have 4 consonants b, r, c, k without a vowel and that vowel may be just ”Î/”. Just saying. Please come back with a friendly comment if you agree :D The Roumanian language, God bless it, has the letters for some sounds in the slavic languages, so dont be shy, pls :)
