Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic was charged with the slaughter of thousands of Muslims and Croats. Maggie O’Kane goes in search of one of the most wanted men in Europe.
Charged with leading the slaughter of thousands of Bosnian Muslims and Croats, he has twice been indicted by The Hague for war crimes.
Just weeks ago he narrowly evaded capture when Nato forces swooped on an enclave in Republika Srbska.
In a special Correspondent investigation, Maggie O'Kane, the Guardian's celebrated war correspondent, goes in search of Karadzic, talking to his relatives, supporters and former secret service operatives in an attempt to hunt down Europe's most wanted.

On the ground, war reporter Maggie O'Kane discovers a destroyed country, scarred from within and irreconcilable. In the midst of the ruins that populate the cities and the traumatized faces, incomprehension reigns as one of the butchers of the Bosnia, Radovan Karadzic, goes on the run. Sarajevo and Srebrenica remain iconic symbols of international failure to prevent and end violent conflict. The safety zones created to facilitate humanitarian aid and protect the population from the Bosnian Serbs have failed and led to tragedy. The fall of the town of Srebrenica in July 1995 is one these. The story Kada Hotic embodies the suffering of thousands of women, men and children, survivors of Srebrenica. She lost her son, husband and two brothers in the massacre. As a survivor, she shares her story to ensure that the past is not forgotten and to put words to this nameless tragedy that eludes all attempts of representation. She dedicated her life to finding those still missing and identifying their remains.
