Great padlock -- in by gone years that padlock was about the toughest one that existed.

Hurd Lock and Manufacturing Co. used to make locks for all Ford cars until Briggs & Stratton (now Strattec) got that business. I guess that was a big blow to their bottom line. Hurd also made casting reels for fishing. They were bought by Avis International and I can't find anything about them after that.

Nice old Hurd. Most examples available are found without that dust shield. They are also front of the core shimable. If you can't pick it open, you can use a standard lock core shim, then pick, or rake the shim in. Once the shim is in, turn it counterclockwise as you noted. I also found out the hard way that they only open counterclockwise. 🤯

I have one that looks like the same keyway that does work both directions but CCW is smoother.

I just got a Hurd off of the ebay with a key, very nasty bidding. I've yet to open it but I've been using a lot of tension. Maybe today I can lighten up and get it open. One interesting thing was that the key would only work CCW until I shot it with some WD40. Then the key works CW too, but not well, you have to jiggle it to get it to turn. Trying to get a good TOK bar on it is hard with that block they put on the top. Very interesting lock. Thanks for the demo, Bill.

I have an almost identical hurd puck lock and key, mine is ccw, but probably 5hrs on it light, med, hard tension, as many pin orders and thought of over setting I can think of - but pins 1 and 2 never bind! Using top of keyway bar and a deep hook. Any help from anyone would be neat - I’m probably just not that good lol

Obviously only on one side, and probably by the core and the shackle directly interfering, with some suitable cutouts that disengage when you rotate the core.
