Despite the presence of Lansbury, a much-heralded Mame´s Broadway revival was ultimately unsuccessful. After seven previews, it opened on July 24, 1983 at the George Gershwin Theatre, where it ran for only 41 performances.

I saw it. It sucked. Badly. All the leading players had been in the original production 17 years earlier. By 1983, they were too old for their roles. What Lansbury did effortlessly at the age of 40 in 1966, she still did at 57. But not effortlessly. And a Mame delivered by sheer dint of will, is no Mame at all. In fairness, the production was booked into the Gershwin, so they had a LOT of space to fill with every move and every punchline. The Upsons were too old to be parents. 58 year old Jane Connell playing a pregnant Gooch was a mistake. She was a great Agnes Gooch in her day. But it had passed. It is a great pity that they were not all reassembled 10 years earlier in a first-class production which was videotaped.

I saw it and it was WONDERFUL! The critics were totally unfair to this terrific production.
