As an addition: If you are using a BOSS FS-5U footswitch you can switch between the different AMP models. No matter where your AMP knob is. In the Tone Studio App on your Computer you have 2 Options for the foot switch. Memory 1 and memory 2. And you're totally free there with the AMP settings. For example you can choose JC red for memory 1, and Metall Stack green for memory 2. And this overrides the AMP knob. So at least you have a 2 channel AMP with a foot switch. Works also with the Smartphone App. So you would be able to switch the settings between songs. Not quite comfortable but possible.

I love this amp. Stereo channel I use in pre-amp mode (change setting in software) so I can listen to my pedal board in stereo at low volume in my bedroom. Cheap, space saving option for this. I used to have a Katana, but I have a pedal board so don’t need all the fx on the Katana and I think the Dual Cube actually sounds better. Don’t know if the Cube would be loud enough to gig with, but that’s not what I use it for. If you want, you can change fx settings in the Editor software (pre delay, time, type of chorus, etc.). There is also a presence knob in the software, and a parametric eq for the output signal. And most amps have alternate versions, like on the Katana II amps.

Thanks so much for clearing up the presets-cycling-model within this unit - you are the only one covering it. Since I need a small and portable amp for small gigs I considered this one. This info saved me from buying one. Usability does not seem to be a priority when developing these products.

Don’t feel bad about not liking it 100%. It sounds great, but, after reading about the Boss Katana 50 MK II and finding it new for a terrific price, I’m no longer interested in the little Cube. I thought it would be great in the house because it’s so portable, which the Katana 50 isn’t but all the stuff packed into that amp is HUGE. It’s on my ‘To Buy’ list because I want to mix it up with my amps. I just play, and not very well, in the living room. I’m getting better and your fabulous playing is so inspiring. 💖 I also am learning a lot from your videos when you explain about guitars and gear. I’m never going to play anywhere beyond my home but if someone comes over and asks me to play I don’t want to embarrass myself. It’s a slow but unrelenting crawl toward getting better. I was much better some years ago but sold my American 🇺🇸 Strat and new Fender Princeton Chorus amp to go bicycling in China 🇨🇳. Should of kept the guitar 😬. I lost all my music so I’m starting over. I really can’t imagine you ever ‘learning’ to play guitar. You’re so good it’s like you were born that way. Keep posting and be safe. 👍☮️🌞🎸🇬🇧❤️

A very belated comment: this has just become a really helpful video for me. I've been thinking about the Dual Cube LX as an option for a quieter amp to play at home (a couple of other amps are also under consideration) and, for all your thoughts on the problems, you've expressed a lot of positivity about the sound of the amp in this video. I'm not really interested in the app, and you can buy the amp cheaper without bluetooth, so that part doesn't bother me. Also, the battery-related issues wouldn't bother me if I'm just playing at home. It does sound like the issue with the presets and the looper might mean I shouldn't bother with the footswitch . . . Thanks Dave, and excellent playing as always.

Thanks for this fair review of the Roland Dual Cube LX, yah it's not a a Boss. Agree with all your comments. On top of the annoying shortcomings there's the insult of the extra cost of a pricey footswitch to access some functions. This was a non starter soon as I first watched reviews so no I never even considered it. A year later I still want one but think it falls way short and the price hasn't come down at all.

I just got the Boss Katana Air, and it is pretty much all the improvements you wanted, except the battery tray is still on the bottom. I think they fixed that with the Boss Katana EX, but the base Katana Air is $420 USD, and the Katana Air EX is a whopping $599.

I personally don't mind battery compartment at bottom cause I don't take amps outside (bedroom musician), also I don't mind looper issues cause I never use looper, same as app features, I don't need those. So my question is: is this a good amp for like USB recording and just using clean amp module setting (and getting sounds from pedalboard) , or I should get Yamaha THR? Thanks for your thoughts and advices from community also. They are similar price point so . :D I'm leaning tiny bit more on THR side, but this Boss does look interesting to me.

One arrived today. It took an hour or so playing and the speakers kicked in seemed louder. I have had the Boss street cubes and a Cube 10x that I think the power supply just crapped out on. The amp sound OK. Not super duper but OK. Went between a 335, a Gretsch, and an acoustic. The acoustic sounded pretty good. All mostly on the JC amp setting. I ordered a Yamaha THR10. Hey Dave! I didn't want to bother you, but I coudl really use your help/knowledge now. I am a beginner player wit ha Boss Katana Mini. The only thing that bugs me is I want to learn and play my favorite songs and I just can't get the sound out of the Katana mini... or it just deosn't sound hmmm "right" or close/good enough (or maybe I am just a bigger noob than I thought, and it's nothing to do with the amp at all...) So I thought an amp like the Boss Dual Cube LX could help (I checked the Yamaha, amps from Orange, positive spark etc). What do you think? Would be the Boss Dual Cube LX a good investment (I woudl use it for years - most likly i would use it til it's dead... - that's for sure) I am never gonna play in a band, I do it for fun, and the maximum I could pay for an amp is 250-300 EUR.

I think we need to consider it as a desktop amp with usb recording feature. Manually tune your sound, play and record. Bonus features are plug-in speakers etc. Strange points about jumping on clean/dirty presets, agree, but maybe in settings something is hidden? There is a memory section. Next point is bluetooth. In 2023 to buy adapter for 50$ of it, really? Looper without manual looping feature also looks quite strange. Again to buy another component, as usual not cheap, plus extra cables. As for the sound in general, i think it requires some burn-in time, usually 40-50 hours for a speaker(-s). In some reviews SQ is just bad. You have a good one. Most probably idea of Roland Cube newVersion was on a papers for a quite long but they decided to put it to factory with some delay, especially while they have Katana Air. Anyway, i need a good small amp, with effects, USB-recording, i had a MicroCube, i love Boss. Most probably this amp is for people like me. Considering, thinking, investigating reviews. Cheers!

@@marcussullens2573 i got it! Using for around 1 month, after 1W tube Marshall DSL1 combo. In general SQ of Marshall is much better. But! With Boss i can set a lot of different sounds mixing them together with chorus/delay/reverb, finally it will be the same sound as from majority of modern KZbinrs, who are using expensive plugins, in blind test i would not recognize where is some neuraldsp or dualcube, only if it will be some super specific delay, shimmer etc. In general this level. Better than old Cube? Yes. KatanaAir? Minus plus the same. USB recording didn't try yet. Design, size, weight, build quality - perfect. Also you can use it on a quite low volume, to play at night for example, while with DSL1 never. In total - perfect versatile amp with modern sound, next generation of Micro Cube.

Yes, your thoughts on it make sense Dave. Boss appear to think of the Cube line as being in an entirely different universe from the Katana and other Roland/Boss amps. But there's no reason why the customer would think of them that way. And no reason to shoehorn in 'features' such as apps that don't do anything necessary. Or loopers that are flaky. But Boss might take on the feedback and do a better model in a year or two. Or they might do away with a model and come out with something entirely different. And it probably all makes sense in the discussions the Boss engineers have in their own world in Japan. But yeah, you've done another great service to your audience by explaining how you get useful and musical things from it, particularly in panel mode, and what doesn't float your boat or you can't get to work how you want it to. So thank you for another very useful video.

I regret buying mine - for similar reasons to you. The editor software can allow a lot of tailoring of sounds but you can't stack FX and there is no way to unlatch the controls - so annoying. I move the reverb nob for example and it changes the reverb size but I just want to change the mix, no way to unlatch, argh. Also the phones/mic out level does nothing - plugin in headphones and the master out controls the level. Is this a fault? I gave up trying to find out. No reply from Boss.

Great video Dave, very informative. Here’s my thoughts… Number one being I think there’s a branding issue going on here. That amp is basically an evolution of the Roland Cube. Now I’m guessing a little here but I’d bet it was done by a completely different team of people to those who did the Katana. In my view putting Boss on it doesn’t help as it raises expectations too high. The battery compartment is just stupid, the presets are pointless as is the app. So what we have is a nice sounding, Bluetooth equipped, twin speaker version of the Micro Cube. Gear4music have these listed at £249. Andertons are taking pre orders for the Positive Grid Spark for… £249. I know the Spark doesn’t do batteries but I know which I’d choose. Thank you Dave for a great video, I thought it was balanced and will certainly be helpful to anyone looking for an amp of that type.

Totally agree. If you compare it to, say, a Roland Micro Cube, it adds a lot of features that I have wished the Micro Cube had, for example, a speaker emulated line out and a flat input to allow it to be used as a monitor. Roland and Boss may be one company, but the Dual Cube LX has 100% Roland DNA.

I might add. There are some reviews going around that the amp buzzes. And a guy running a wire from the wall plug ground to the amp. They have crappy house wiring. THE AMP IS DEAD QUIET PLUGGED IN.

Yo Dave, Great review as always! I know exactly where you are coming from, I ordered one as soon as Andertons had them in stock. Initially I was attracted by the size, features and versatility, but I have also found it really fiddly, the pre-set save button only working when all the the EQ knobs have been moved is infuriating, you find a sound, pick a memory slot, go to save (it Doesn't) then have to reset the knobs before it will save. So now just using it with my pedalboard and wish it just had a basic EQ and an effects loop.

I have the Boss Micro Cube, the very first ones that came out in the early to mid 2000's, and I would pass on the Dual Cube LX, just because it is the same price or more as the Boss 50 Katana. The battery compartment and the UI along with the App are also a no go.

since you already have it, use it for what it is, and maybe add a multi effects unti to make it easier to use for different sounds.

I just got the Boss Katana Air, and it is pretty much all the improvements you wanted, except the battery tray is still on the bottom. I think they fixed that with the Boss Katana EX, but the base Katana Air is $420 USD, and the Katana Air EX is a whopping $599.

I feel for you man. I bought a boss pocket gt and have been so mad I could chew nails. Apparently you can't run it into an amp??? Who in their right mind would think of running guitar effects into a guitar amp?🤔 I don't know what is going on with boss. They take a good concept and never finish the thought. Corporate I guess. Funny how Mooer got it done. Anyways don't let it get you down, and keep on rocking.👍👍✌️

Hey man stop punishing yourself. You made a great demo and mentioned the negative points, don't feel bad about it. Take some pain killers for the tooth! Love your vids, loved the live gig blog but again you're punishing yourself because of a piece of equipment. I've been there man and pissed my band off 😂 years ago. You're great, the trio are brilliant and I'm a folky! Keep on Rockin!!!

Any amp that needs to connect to a cell phone is a hard NO for me. It's just short sighted, and stupid. In all honesty it'll be landfill within a decade due to being dependent on something that will be phased out eventually as well as being so complex that repair will be impossible. It's already at that point now with all the SMD parts and programmed chips in everything, why double down on stupid with ridiculous apps? It's just dumb. It's just an amp, why complicate it?

That’s a real disappointment. I used one of the old cubes at a music school I worked at and it always sounded great. For an amp designed for busking it really seems they completely missed the point on this one.
