Also the effects in the GT-100 are really superb. I think what a lot of people don't do is try to create a sound of their own rather than create a sound that everyone else is using. You can do this with a GT-100. All these guys want to sound like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Johnson, Clapton or whoever. These guys are either here or were. You're only going to sound like a bad version them. Be yourself, you're the only one who can.

Hi Paul. Thanks for the excellant tutorial. You really are a very talented teacher. I just bought a Boss GT 100. I chose it because I am doing a broadway style type of show which incorprates 9 period pieces. Since the show is kind of a History Doumentary I want to recreate the toe for each song as close as possible. That's why I bought the Boss GT 100 rather than the POD HD 500. I wanted those Boss chips.

Wow503, below thinks a Line 6 processor sounds better than the Boss GT-100 I used here in the video. But that's like Tony Iommi liking Laney amps, Wishbone Ash liking early Orange amps, and Pete Townshend liking Hiwatts. Actually in the early days Pete really liked a 3x10 Bandmaster and a Chet Atkins guitar in the studio. Of course, we all have different tastes. The sounds in the video were the sounds I was going for when I did the video. In Answer to Wow503: yes, I recently did have my hearing checked! I must admit after over 40 years of playing gigs, my top end hearing is not good. You may be right about that. ;-) On most Boss or Line 6 gear I can get tones that I like, they are both great companies and make amazing boxes! And, at a low cost too! I especially like the Boss ME-80, around 300 bucks! Btw, I compressed this video because so it would upload faster, that's why it's a bit grainy. (When I did it my internet was not very fast.) Rock on!! PH

Hi Jaya, there are at least 200 sounds in the preset area (called patches). Play through every patch until you find the ones that sound like the clean one, and Gary Moore one you want. When you have chosen a patch you like press WRITE. Then select a User location like U 1-1 or U 1-2... etc., then press WRITE again, That'll save them in the User area, then start adjusting them. Call the Roland product support guys if you can't figure it out, they rock!!!

Hi Peter, you are right, BOSS puts everything but the kitchen sink in their Multi FX!!! Maybe the sink will be in a future product ;) I was a clinician for BOSS and carried those BOSS products all over the country in planes, cars, etc... I used to drop those GTs in Guitar Centers then stand on the knobs to get the sales guys attention, maybe one or two knobs fell off but I don't think I ever had one break!!

Digital is really coming along. I've got a GT-100 and I absolutely love it. I've also got a few Strymon pedals and the El Capistan and Blue Sky Reverb sound better than any real tape echo or tube reverb I've ever heard or owned without the hassles. Tube amps are great but getting high quality tubes is almost impossible now-a-days. Every time you have to re-tube your amp you're running the risk of it sounding like a totally different amp.

But like many others I have had trouble getting the tones I am looking for. However, I believe that the challenge is pobably my ears not the equipment. When I played years ago, all effects were pedals. Now there are so many customizable parameters it is hard to find that just that right mixture. For example, it would be a lot easier for me to just plug in an old Fuzz when I do "I can't get no Satisfaction" then to play with all those dials. I just can't seem to get that pure fuzz tone?

You know, after it's mixed it's hard to tell what is real and what was mic'd. I think the main difference is that real amp tones have more artifacts. Weird crackles, things vibrating in the room, loose screws, microphonic tubes, rattling in the cabinet... on and on... I guess the Line 6 and Boss engineers need to add these? But the poor studio engineers have been trying to remove these artifacts since amps were originally mic'd!

Paul thank you for the tutorial & you are a MONSTER player! The thing that is troubling me is that I cant figure out how to bypass the Gt-100 completely if I just want the sound of my amp ... my clean sounds better than the presets , would you know how to accomplish this ?
@sockpharmer10 жыл бұрын
I've been using this pedal for a few months and the only option is to go totally clean with bass/mid/treble set at the same level. To truly bypass it, you'd have to use something like a bypass switcher (like the "Voodoo Lab Pedal Switcher True Bypass Loops") to take the Boss in and out of the signal chain.
@alanrodrigues26166 жыл бұрын
Enable the S/R setting on a patch. If you also combine that with the 4 cable method and use the GT100 as a stomp box. You need effects loop or send receive on amp for4 cable set up...demos on you tube. You will retain your amp tone. In essence 4 cable plus that s/r setting on

Paul Hi, stumbled on your excellent vid' ,I just got the GT for live gigs,duo work direct to P.A through a A&H 10 fx into an FBT vertus system,problem I have is that I set up my patches at home through a small mixer into Truth B2031A"s and great sound,through live rig C***p sound,no cut, no fizz. O/D sounds disappear in mix. I must be missing a few tricks,the manual is not very good on set-up details. Driving me nuts as I hear amazing demo's and get awful results, what am I missing here? my previous Vox S.E sounded fine just retired with age and W&T. The GT in no way compares to the Kemper' which we keep in the studio but that is not allowed out on the road and another one is too expensive,sadly as it is the No1 unit around.
@ShredGuitarOnline10 жыл бұрын
Gear always sounds different through a PA than studio monitors. When I use a Boss processor live I will do small tweaks during soundcheck listening through the system that I will end up playing through with the band. That being said it sounds to me like you may have something going on, maybe the mixer trim settings, or a phase issue if you are running stereo?? or something else... Your output setting should be set to "Line" or if you like a darker sound maybe "Stack". You also have global eq settings? Maybe something is plugged in wrong, are you using it stereo in the studio then mono live? That could be an issue also. You should use a line input on the mixer not a mic in... You probably already checked this though...? Keep me posted I'm always interested in gear problems as I want to avoid them myself!! The GT-100 should have no problems running it the way you want, it's just setting it up right that's hard because there are so many choices.

Paul Hanson Cheers Paul,I started to revamp my sounds today by setting the Vertus up facing me and re-e.q.ing the patches and what I notice is that what I hear coming at me is a lot different than I hear on gigs , the system is active with 2x8' 600w bass bins and 2x6x4.5'' +4x1' horn columns at 700w each with internal dsp . Using a PRS studio with GTech midi out to GR55 then driving GT100. I followed some of your tips and results seem promising.Still not Kemper' class but very usable for m,o,r gigs.

Great demo Paul, thanks. If you don't mind I have a question, I would like to control the system function to turn on and off the USB control by one of the pedals, can this be done?
@ShredGuitarOnline8 жыл бұрын
I am pretty sure the USB in the GT-100 is for two things, 1) using Boss computer editor program "Boss Tone Studio", 2) streaming audio into your DAW with the driver you can download at BOSS. I'm not sure what you application is but you can probably find a work around to do whatever you want with this box. The GT-100 is very deep, and BOSS, in typical BOSS style, includes so many possibilities you'll need to ask Thomas Nordegg, not me.

I have a series of soft instruments setup in Abelton Live, and I am using the GT100 (connected by USB) as my interface. I would like to be able to enable and disable the mix signal, which can be done manually, however, I would like to enable and disable by using one of the pedals on the GT100.

I don't know if you've heard a Rockman recently but none of the amp models I played in this video sound like one. I admit if you A/B, in recordings of the combo model in this GT to a "59 Bassman combo recording they will sound different. But have you ever A/B'd one Bassman to another, they sound different too. amazing! at any point is the GK3 pickup involved in your tone with the GT-100? What is your opinion of the GR-55?
@ShredGuitarOnline11 жыл бұрын
Hi Sky Gale, nope, the GK is on that guitar mainly for my VG-99, my favorite box!! It uses modeling technology, not pitch to voltage like guitar synths. It's regular guitar pickup processing, amp modeling etc. is great too!!! The GK on the guitar is for guitar modeling, I use that for looping gigs so I can play bass and acoustic tones with my guitar. (Btw Roland does not make the VG in any more). I always have issues with guitar synths because they have tracking problems and false triggering. The newer GR-55 includes pitch to voltage along with guitar modelling so there are advantages if you blend the two, it'll cover the tracking issues. It was all the GT-100 in the vid, amp models and effects etc...
@SkyFalllast11 жыл бұрын
well my next question is have you noticed the the false triggering and tracking in the GR (side note# I will probably never play speed metal or licks that fast simply because I can't)? I was looking at the GR simply because going down to one guitar makes so much more sense when the synth can be a bass, acoustic, 12 string, & etc. anyway I want to say you definitely have me looking at the GT-100 now as a likely alternative and I will make do. Thanks
@ShredGuitarOnline11 жыл бұрын
Sky Gale Yep the GR synths will false trigger once in a while. Go to ebay and get a Roland VG-99! You can do bass and acoustic guitar, synth type sounds, organ etc. But no pitch to voltage so no false triggers. Guitar modeling! You'll still need a GR pickup and 13 pin cable. Some people swear by the GR synths but I like the VGs!!!
@TheAngello12010 жыл бұрын
Sky Hi,the GR55 is a good unit in lots of ways but a frustration in others,I found that setting my R,R strat up was a breeze but the G-TECH PEIZO system a nightmare,also a lot of sounds from the GR 33 are missing like choral patches that I used a lot,for tracking the fishman wireless unit is tops but needs an iPad or lap top.
@ShredGuitarOnline10 жыл бұрын
TheAngello120 My advice is get used to using the free GR-55 Librarian program for your computer. You can load in a Multitude of patches to find the ones you want. Here ones by famous artists and my 25 based on famous synth songs: www.rolandus.com/go/gr-55_artist_patches/
@alanredversangel11 жыл бұрын
The saddest thing about the GT series is that there are very usable amp sounds in there but you have to tweak so much to get even close to a real amp. A lot of the models in this video sound like a heavily eq'd DS-1.
@AeolianReflex10 жыл бұрын
Anyone know how these units sound with the amp modeling bypassed? Do they suck your tone or leave a pure signal? I've always like boss / roland effects but prefer real tube overdrive & saturation so this may be a great way to get multi-effects in a single unit if the sims can be bypassed.
@ShredGuitarOnline10 жыл бұрын
Bypassing the amp models and cabs are easy, just turn them off in the patch. All the GTs work great this way. Insert the GT in the fx loop and you'll get very nice delays, 'verbs, modulation effects etc. I would suggest to try this out first and if any of your tone is missing, you could add a mixer to run the GT at 100% effect and then dial in the effect by percentage from the mixer... but the mixer might suck tone too and it just adds more gear and more hassle. Try it out first. But read the manual because the GTs are deep and can do just about anything and there are a lot of settings in there. The Boss MEs are easier to run but not as deep.
@ShredGuitarOnline11 жыл бұрын
I think they are called "advanced" because they are new and use a newer more advanced modeling technology than the older models.

Yes the GT-100 has many tentacles... very deep and complex. the ME-70 is much easier! The ME-25 is cheap $200! And it sounds as good as the GT and ME-70 but it is kind of hard to program. Not bad when you get the hang of it. You have to go into editing mode then all the knobs do editing. Also you can't jump from patch 2 to 5, you have to step through patch 2, 3, 4, then to 5. But the ME 25 is a killer deal!!

Anyway I think multieffects like gt100 work only with metal because of its shitty digital sound in the background... 2:50 AC/DC?? No way... I had boss gt-10 and before I bought it I tought that it is the solution (all in one, less cables etc.) but now I don't. If you need toy you can buy it but if you want good sound let it go and buy some of real pedals
