Regarding the monochrome screen... pretty sure that’s to keep the current draw relatively low (only 670mA), allowing it to be powered from a lot of pedalboard supplies. Most of the multicolored boards/boxes require 2-3 amps and have lower DSP capacity. You’re basically getting a lot more power efficiency as a trade-off for a mediocre display

For anyone who might be wondering why I made this video - a)I was asked on multiple occasions to give my thoughts on the GT1000 Core b)I saw the marketing about 24 simultaneous blocks (without limitations) and the other paid demos extolling the virtues of the device c)I paid £600 for the device, and it turns out that you get 24 simultaneous blocks BUT 4 of them have to be an EQ, 4 of them have to be a simple delay and 2 of them have to be a noise suppressor. If like me, you'd read the marketing stuff and watched the paid demos you probably wouldn't know some of these points. I'm not saying that the GT1000Core doesn't sound decent. I think it does.

@@johnnathancordy no just download the tone studio from the download section of their webpage. you can use boss software and see the blocks even without connecting a boss processor to your pc (for other brands like zoom and mooer you can't do that). also I will tell another detail for you. if you compare boss gt1000, gt100 core and ms-3, they have the same options for FX1, FX2, ... etc blocks. FX blocks are the blocks that you can choose an effect from different sorts of effects. BUT in gt100 and gt1 you simply have a different collection of effects for those FX1, FX2, ... etc blocks.That means you don't have some of the effects on gt1000 core which exist in gt1 which is bad i think. gt1000 (and core) is the higher tier product, it should have all the effects from the beginner level products plus more new effects while the reality hurts a bit. still I think boss 1000 core is the better product compared to hx stomp. it simply has more processing power. line 6 helix products mostly have dsp limit.

The EQ blocks are super important for me. You can start with an EQ off the gate and EQ your guitar before it goes into the AMP. Then I use two EQs to remove frequencies that I don't like. The last EQs I use to increase specific areas I really like hearing. I think the EQs are super important to shape your tone. Some of the digital users sound very harsh and their tone is not as warm. The EQ can get you to that quasi valve.

I am a Bass player, started using the core about one and a half month ago. I was able to do anything I needed to do, in order to get my basic sound (for my 2 main basses - Ibanez 6 stg, and Sire V10 fretless), literally within minutes. I am a Roland\Boss user for years, so I kind of understand Boss menu "logic". Now as a bass player, I sometimes need a preset for two parallel guitars (I prefer to have one preset per session or one main, and another for specific songs), and no working on integrating midi (I'm a long time GR-55 user). So my conclusion: 1. No other amp\cab emulator sounded close on my Tannoy monitors, I can actually play very low (level, I always play low :) ), and it still feels like an amp, and one of only 2 (a friend's Kamper), which can play my Ibanez low B without distorting (or killing the subs by cutting it), on the same monitors. From what I've seen, it would have taken me much more time in any other device (because I'm used to Boss), and the sound is much better IMO as a bass player, and that's the most important criteria for me.

Hello, I have the GT 1000 flagship that I bought a year ago and I absolutely love it. I’ve also had the helix floor, a HX Stomp, and the HX effects. I do believe that they are good also but I just love the boss products. I just recently bought the GT 1000 core and I am loving it for its size on my board. The flagship model just took up too much real estate. I am still keeping it though. What I came to realize is that the smaller core had enough switching power for me. Are use the first switch for amp change, then I use the second switch for my special effect and finally I use the third switch for my lead boost. Also from nux I bought a two switch box and I assign my Tuner on one and One of the effects loop which I run to and I have my choice to assign that last switch to whatever I want. I also have another one of those two button switches from Nux And I can use it if I want to add two more assignments. All in all it is exactly what is best for me which is everybody’s own choice which is completely OK by me. Everyone should do what’s best for them. Thanks for making the video.

I definately understand some of your points especially when it seems you are coming more from the Line6 stuff, Boss has their own way of doing things and its probably at least partly due to that they have been around for so long and done GT units since at least the mid 90´s. The display may not look that great, but it was actually chosen for visibility rather than beauty, its supposed to be much better in sunlight than other units. The 24 blocks may be a slightly overblown statement although true, but if you need an eq on other units you will still have to sacrifice a block for it anyway for example. The semi fixed chain has both positives an negatives, it is for example the reason why you get almost instant patch changes since all the effectblocks are always on in the background although doesnt affect the sound if they are "deactivated", i like the fact that what you see in the chain is what you get, there is no other limit, in other units even with a semifixed chain like the Mooer stuff you can still hit a DSP limit, not so with the Boss units. I dont own any of the newer units, i have a 15 year old Boss GT unit that i still use, but i have been using Boss effects since the 80´s so im very used to the Boss way of doing things and i tend to like it . There is nothing wrong with opinions, it can only help to make better products in the future. Cheers !

I’ve purchased and played with Helix among others and ended up settling on the flagship Boss GT-1000 which also features heavily on my upcoming album. I feel that it is incredibly different to most other products in that the lack of quantity in amp sims is down on its competitors. The Boss amp tones aren’t exactly one thing or another. They are unique and malleable so you can craft your own tone. Whilst you make a fair point about about the number of effects, the work around is simple. The processor power is so good you can change presets very seamlessly and with reverb and delay tails intact. This in itself would make it difficult to need more than 6-8 presets at a given time realistically. Tks for the review as every opinion is valid.

I used to have a Boss GT-8. It made me _extremely_ leery of ever buying a Boss "all-in-one-multi-effects" unit ever again. Going _for_ it, it had _really_ good time and modulation effects and very good compression effects, and effects could be sequenced in any order. If I recall correctly, 8 effects could be simultaneously used. It was astoundingly versatile from that point of view. (I believe that it was the only unit at the time that would do that.) Against it, it was hideously tedious to set up a great tone, due to all the menus and options and dialing and fiddling that you had to go through. It was _far_ too easy to cross over into digital overload distortion territory (which sounds just horrible) when setting up a sound, and the default settings exacerbated this problem. The clipping, crunching and grinding amp models all sounded fake, muddy and boxy. I could never get one to sound realistic. Many of the distortion effects like Tube Screamers and fuzzes also sounded synthetic and unconvincing. Also, although it was touted as being a MIDI device, it was actually a "Boss MIDI" device. You couldn't _control_ MIDI devices from it (unless they were Boss MIDI devices) you could only control the GT-8 from an external device, which reduced its utility. This wasn't mentioned in the marketing material or even the manual. I had to find out about it from a Digitech employee when I called them to find out why their device wasn't accepting MIDI commands. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. If I *ever* buy a Boss multi-effects unit again, I'm testing it *thoroughly* in the music store *first.* It's a pity. Most of their single-effect pedals are really great. Except for the RC-1...

Although I wish that those blocks were more flexible and at least one more reverb block, I can see that Boss is appealing to a new market as well as their own share of the GT series. This chain structure of dedicated FX, Drive, NS, Delay,EQ and Preamp blocks has been the staple of the Boss GT series for a while now and giving that away might have been a risky leap for them, other than engineering a completely new hardware and software to handle it. Think of it as Apple improving on the IOS but not launching a whole new OS with each new unit. The Apple analogy here also works in the sense that new units might not be as new as people wish they were.

Just like to point out that if you're a hardcore Helix user, you're not going to say the GT 1000Core is just as good or better than the Stomp. Ah HAAAA. I was trying to work out where this DAFT 3 switch fad came from and you reminded me - the Yamaha Magic stomp. Q. why 3 switches? A. Allan Holdsworth. You can hear the shredders at Line 6 and Fractal going 'well, if it was good enough for God..) Still, I think the 3 switch thing is daft because Allan was not the foot tapping/dancing floor-gazing kind of performer. He had 2 sounds and he never used tap-tempo. To tune he pushed buttons while he sipped on beer. Thanks for the great video.

@@johnnathancordy I agree, then I think why not 2? A tuner and a tap tempo? why not 3 with that much real estate? Utility, tap, tuner. We know the answer: because! I knew about the "24 blocks" thing as soon as I read the manual. The biggest drawback I can think of is only one reverb block. The biggest advantage to it (in my mind) is the extensive MIDI and internal LFO/envelope triggers you can use with effects. Not perfect, by any means... but all things considered, still pretty good.
@johnnathancordy4 жыл бұрын
There is the "dual reverb" thing where you can run two Hall, Plate and Room reverbs in combination. I don't necessarily think it's a drawback but it's sort of different to what has been presented - if 25% of the blocks are fixed as EQ/noise suppressors it's kinda less impressive than what they appeared to be presenting?

I bought an HX stomp and considered the Gt1000 core at the same time as an alternative - the HX stomp was on back order in most places in AU because of COVID shipping delays. Stores had the boss gt1000 core and presented it as an option and spruked the sales line of 24 FX and the full gt1000 unit processing functionality. A well know AU store also released a poor comparison video pretty much pushing the idea of the gt1000core being much more powerful glossing over the lack of flexibility and it was the only comparison review at the time I could find. I had to read the manual to find out what you pointed out so THANK-YOU for pointing this stuff out to unbeknownst buyers looking at gt1000core and falling into that pitfall. I was lucky to have owned the boss gt100 which I purchased a while back, seeing the long signal chain and 8 rotary dials for FX parameters which looks like L6 adopted for the Helix. When I got it home it had the same issue of locked in FX type blocks with only 2 free flexible blocks- that + the dry signal direct to amp was very coloured (not true bypass sounding - not even close) resulted in my purchasing the L6 HD500 for 8 fully flexible blocks (+2 amps) over their 14 (or so) type locked FX blocks. So I dug deeper past the sales pitches to find the same philosophy to DSP management was employed in the gt1000 (core) a went for the HX stomp (luckily found a store several states over willing to deliver). Anyway thanks for the honest review.

I wanted to replace my Zoom G5n with something more high -end and got the Headrush Gigboard: for the looks of it, lower price than the GT Core and super cool huge touchscreen and finally the possibility of having the IR's (G5n doesn't have the IR's option). There are 270 factory presets uploaded into the unit - so I spent about 3 days trying them out, and... esp. trying to get them to sound decent. I bought one patch to see how it compares to factory made ones - a world of difference. But, I spent around a week trying to create a decent sound for the clean channel with my strat (say, my fave Mark Knopfler clean, early Dire Straits sound). I got nowhere near as close to Knopfler sound (mind you his sound is usually no brainer - clean vintage amp with a little compression and reverb/delay) , but ... where I definitely got was the option paralysis. I am coming from tube amps mainly (Zoom is for late nigth practice and easy recording of ideas for songs, solos, etc.), and while I appreciate the fact that these days you can have all the pedalboards in the world charmed in a small box is fantastic - I just think the fun factor comes a little too late. Instead of concentrating on music and playing i was just tweaking virtual knobs for hours on end, never feeling happy. Understanding it - requires a University degree in sound engineering . and finally, having fun with it, is... never taking place, until your MSc in the subject is completed. I ended up going for a tube with analogue pedalboard = had lots of fun with my Laney Cub8 and three simple and cheap pedals. Wow... that has taught me the real value of my time with music , in the times of prolonged home office hours, another computer in your spare time is definitely NOT an option. GT Core you're reviewing was on my radar, but it no longer is - thank you for your honest 2 cents!

Hi, I super nice review and feeling playing... love it ! I have a Hx Stomp and I use it just for effects using the 4 cable Method. I am interested to know how are just the effects compared HX vs Gt1000 and how good is the bypass. The HX bypass is not as good as expected it has a big Hiss. On the other hand I use a midi controller to control the effects, using the midi thru from the HX Stomp to change channels in the amp. I still don't know reading the Gt1000 core manual if there is a Midi Thru, and if the Midi presets can be turn off in order to just change presets in the Amp. Another thing I don't like about Gt1000 core is the Midi IN -OUT small TRS cable ..... All those MIDI things are working fine in the HX stomp, anyway the most important thing in a pedalboard is the SOUND .... and I still haven't seen a good effects comparison between the 2 units.

@mylesmaths70053 жыл бұрын
I guess if you get the menu system the GT 1000 is easy to operate. I do and it is. If you are buying something for the display not what it sounds like - perhaps that's something you want to think about. The Helix always sounds fizzy to me. It seems very good at very heavy distortion but less good at crunchy or 80's rock tones. I must emphasise that I don't own one and in fact, I've never seen one used live, only on youtube. Sound-wise it was never on my shopping list. I love the screen interface on the Headrush however I'm told a local shop no longer sells it due to the number of returns due to the screen failing. The last guy I heard using a Headrush live also sounded like he had a wasp in a jam jar. Plus, the Headrush has a massive footprint. The description of the signal chain is a bit misleading in this video as you can vary it significantly on the GT1000. Some of the presets have 4 parallel signal paths running. That seems pointless to me but there we are. I also disagree on the cabs issue. The Helix and the Headrush do allow you to run a Plexi through a 1x18 orange bass cab. But why the hell would you? In the Boss you get a Plexi and it's running through a 4x12 because that's what you'd do. Having options you will never use seems pointless to me. So back to things they don't tell you - of the Gt1000, Headrush and Helix the ONLY one that will channel change a real amp and act as a multi-effects using 4 cable method plus a cable to do the channel switching is the Boss. I used a Boss GT8 with a Marshall JCM 800 like that for many years. It's a great compromise to carrying a full size pedal board and a valve amp. I've used a GT1000 like that but I have settled on using it as a modeller and running through a PA speaker. I've got the full size one. I think it's phenomenal.
@johnnathancordy3 жыл бұрын
I did some comparison videos of the Vox tones and Fender tones with the Helix equivalent and certainly the fizz stuff was more prevalent in the GT, though of course it's a thing that happens with all modellers! I've also heard about QC issues with the Headrush, so agreed on that. The Helix actually is capable of channel switching an amp, not sure the Headrush can though. But yeh, I didn't have any complaints about the sound, I just thought that the marketing was a bit off with the "24 simultaneous blocks" thing and none of the other videos I saw had pointed out that the signal chain and options were semi fixed - like not being able to run more than one type of posh delay, or having only one reverb block. Probably for most folks it could still work, but I felt like it was stuff that I would have wanted to know before I bought it?

Regarding the "too many EQs" comments, I think they might be useful. Here are some ideas on how to: Sometimes you want a certain type of tone change and one of the EQs gives it to you in a more immediate way than the others; You have a good sounding preset with a HB but with SC it doesn't sound well. Instead of making a more complicated change to get a new preset for the SC you might be able to just make changes in one EQ. These changes might even apply for more or all presets between two guitars (HB vs SC). In the same logic you may use changes on one of the EQs to have the unit sounding well through different amplification / recording systems. This is just an idea without having used or seen the description of the mentioned EQs. Keep making these videos, as they are very informative, without mentioning your playing!...

It still more powerfull than the HX Stomp 6 blocks now upgraded to eight but you can't always even run all eight blocks, if I'm careful I can get all eight blocks filled and working but not with my first choice of fX and amps, often I can't get 7 filled, sometimes it will top out at 6. The stomp won't always run dual amps and dual IRs with a delay and reverb. At least the core seems to run everything that it should run. Dual amps with dual cabs with dual drives multiple delays and other effect all work. Today I would not buy the stomp over the core but there was no core when I bought the stomp. (the GT 1000 has already been around a while.) I have had a ton of Boss products over the years and currently have a partially working GT6 and 2 broken BR1180 cd recorders out in the shed. My original DS1 is however going strong. I believe I have a bit more thinking to do. The main thing I wanted out of the Core was the dual amp capability, in the Pod Go I don't get that but do get a lot of other extras. I don't like complicated interfaces. I want to be able to create a sound easily and just play. I am not kicking the Core to the curb just yet, you make it sound great in your mixes.

I think it sounds great, but the interface is not for me!

I think the hate comments are because of the suggestive title and just giving negatives about the unit, all while you don't have other videos with the same characteristics about Line 6 products (unless I missed something).

I'm holding on for the next Boss GT..... model, fingers crossed Boss upgrade that display. Still playing thru my POD HD Pro X Rackmount which also needs tweaking to dial in less harsh tones.

This definitely helped in my buying decision. Thanks
