Juca is a wizard with the Katana, and he unfortunately catches some heat from people because, YES, with enough time and understanding anyone could do what he does (to an extent). That said, I could also change my own oil in my car, and I could paint my own house, BUT I pay other people to do those things for the sake of my own time and convenience, and in this case, you wont find anyone out there more capable, or knowledgeable, or who provides such impeccable customer support, he very regularly contacts 1 on 1 with people to help them tweak and fine tune his patches to sound right on THEIR guitar/rig.

You can say that about almost anyone with any subject. Given enough time and practice, work and education, anyone can do almost anything. The problem is all the time it takes to do that requires that means you only get to pick one or two things to be an expert at something.

Largest issue with the packs are that the patches within hem are not even close to being level matched. Some are whisper quiet and others blow windows out. One must be careful when scrolling thru them and adjust the eq block level to correct level match. I’ve discussed this with him but it will take him a considerable amount of time to go back through the packs and correctly level match at this point.

To put in context, I am a beginner myself and used the clean setting with onboard pedals for most of my practice and jam sessions. Thanks Justin you two are both great resources in customer service so to speak. So at 27:00 minutes in you guys articulated one of the most important tips about a katana and that is .. because it’s not a tube amp you don’t have to turn it up loud to get a loud tube amp like tone. He inferred it and you completed the thought by stating that you do have to turn a tube amp up loud to get that tone ,( unless you use an attenuator ) .It’s a point a player who doesn’t have a lot of experience with getting good tone out a tube amp won’t be able to fully appreciate about the katana.. oh ya . He did mention that’s one of the main reasons he likes it , because he can get that tone without bothering the neighbors It one of the things I appreciate about the katana also

Hi Justin. Totally agree on the Master being cranked. I just bought MkII Artist and it has no "feel". It's like playing through an amp that's in another room or something. Cranking the Master helps the power amp react to your fingers better. Feels more like a "real amp" when the master is pegged.

I just dialed in a fantastic tone on my Katana mk2. Settings: clean. Gain= 4, Bass= 6, mid= 6, treble= 7.5....now here is the kicker, this part is only pertaining to the overdrive effect, I assign my expression pedal to the “drive” on my booster (crunch OD), and set the “drive” parameters 0 to 95, tone=+16, bottom-6, effect level= 44, solo sw= on, solo level= 50, direct mix 65. Then I use a little delay (you choose). Have fun going from a crisp clean to a POWERFUL and full overdrive! I have enjoyed this quite a bit. Hope you do as well!

At 19:55 where Justin was confused, Juca was talking about a software plugin called Bias Amp. It comes with a couple hundred amp simulations that were made by capturing the impulse response of those amps. So you can basically press a button and make your guitar sound like it's connected to the Katana, or any of those couple hundred amps. Juca was saying that he compared the tone he got from his real Katana and from the simulated Katana, and they sounded identical.

I thought it was weird he said he didn't like cranking the master like a real amp, but really all that is doing is altering the eq. He can do that at any volume which is actually the same thing. I’ve heard several people mention their katana sounds good when the master volume is max and then dialling in the gain and volume accordingly. I tried this yesterday and I can’t get it to sound decent. It gets muddy even after eq’ing. Not to mention, any time the master is up high, even on clean, the amp has a tiny bit of hum. I’m assuming that’s just cuz the throttle is full on. I’ve found the best volume balance is by increasing the channel volume and master volume equally. It seems to retain the most articulate tone when treating those as mirrors of each other.
@valebliz4 жыл бұрын
People saying to crank the master don't make any sense tbh. The VOLUME control dial the amp modeling tone, while the master is what it is: a master volume. The tonelab app doesn't even show the master control.
@SeemsLikeSomething4 жыл бұрын
valebliz Yeah agreed. I usually start with the volume on 50% and dial in my gain, then master up to whatever. Seems to work out nicely. Just doesn’t sound right when the channel volume is set too low. I prefer working from noon upward.

@@JimmyRadloff Yep , master volume on Katana works better NOT cranked and using it as overall volume control with volume at 50% to maxed. The tone is much better that way. So I'll add a tone tip I discovered yesterday before a gig with my 100Watt Katana- I've found that it wasn't really cutting through the band mix at my local jam and guys with little Fender Champs would cut through better then my 100 watt Katana- which was frustrating to no end. Then I watched this video with Papastache: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJCWc2OwhJaSa9k and just LOVE his tone here so I dialed in my Katana to sound a lot like the Friedman Dirty Shirly he uses here (basic just breaking up tone) and put my Master on full- Volume on about 11:00- but put a fuzz in front of the amp (a real one- not something on-board on the Katana). Suddenly my amp last night at the gig was just unbelievably great sounding and REALLY cut through the mix nicely. I didn't play the fuzz "as a fuzz" as much as I used it as a boost- but the fuzz and volume were at about 1:00 each on the pedal- but the volume on my guitar was at around 4 for rhythm- about 7-8 for leads- never had more compliments on my tone and playing then last night- must have been a dozen people came up afterward and asked what I was playing through (since my Katana is in a custom Mojotone tweed 1x15 cabinet- it's not obvious it's a Katana and always shocks people when they find out). Also- I have to disagree with both Juca and Justin here- I find the Katana is every bit as touch sensitive as my vintage tube amps- maybe even more so- just don't dial in so much gain and it cleans up really well with both the guitar volume and touch attack. Anyway- I've used fuzzes in front of my tube amps for years to make really great clean tones with the volume rolled back- but didn't think it would work on the Katana because it's not a tube amp- turns out it might work even better!

I use a cochlear implant and I was in front of a katana artist and then a PRS Tube amp.. same guitar 5 seconds apart and the difference from there is easy to understand even for a deaf man . If you do a comparison from a recording.. it is almost impossible to know if the EQ and settings are adjusted correctly. The difference is in the responsiveness and the EQ and in some situations the EQ of the Katana has an advantage. The overall Picture that the Katana is not as heavy , does not weight as much and has much more for versatility. The price point is good but its a scam to a degree because most of us need a pedal which is another 130 to 150 bucks. BTW , The artist definitely sounds better than the mK2 50 by a long shot. The bank of pedals and reverb are a good value.

My Katana 50 mk 2 is so, so, so, way too bassy. It's absurd. And that is with global eq off/flat, no fx on, and eq knobs at 12 o'clock. I have to take so much bass out at so many points to get a usable sound. And that is with a Strat.

I recently acquired a 2nd hand Mk1 recently and I hate it. Tried everything from factory reset, updating with firmware messing around with tone works and still everything comes out tainted with this hideous gritty tinny background. The clean option is the only thing that sound almost acceptable. Am I missing a trick here?

Katana are easy. You jst tweak it to sound how u feel in the moment. It doesn't sound as warm ordynamic as a tube amp but its great value and it was the vest money I've spent cause I was scared of tubes....and couldn't afford it. Hell I rock a 150$cheap sg. But it's fun until I get somthing diff. And those katana are loud as fk. Lota power

It was named "Katana" for number of reasons. You know, katana is a actually a type of sword that cuts almost everything very easily. So then katana amp cuts through the mix and not only that, it cuts all your perceptions based on previous experience with modeling/digital/non-tube amps. Is not that amazing? I mean most of our icons who recorded their epic guitar lines with the gear available at that time (and these were tube amps) would probably die for sth like katana. Because it sounds amazing and the reliability is hilariously great which you cannot say the same about the tube amps. Katana cheap, loud, sounds great and it does not have the components you'll have to change after 2000 hours of playing it. I think the first kind of revolution in simpleman guitarplayers' minds happened when Yamaha THR series of bedroom amps came out, 10 years ago or so. And now it's another step in sounds technology that you can afford for $250. It sounds great both quiet and loud. It can be a bedroom amp and giging one as well. I am personally in a situation of choice between katana mk2 50/100 or buying a used all-tube Vox night train 15 combo. I'm a huge fan of Brian May and his tone, and I know this vox will do the job pretty well, but let alone the fact it costs full $500 used it will also need the tubes changed (another $100) + a decent treble booster (i really loved the fulltone ranger that costs $350 with shipping) + chorus and delay pedals (200-300 in addition). $1150-1250 in total just for the amp, tubes and pedals to achieve that tone. And then I see guys on YT getting same sound results with katana that costs $200 used and has all the effects on board... And one more too say, I don't think all-tube amp will sound good on my bedroom volumes, as said on the video it needs to be cranked really well to make the power amp overdrive as well. And of course $1000 of price difference for same or very similiar sound (with unnoticeble differences) is a lot.

Katana Tone Studio Version 2 is SO buggy. if I switch boosts, it erases my settings and turns the bottom knob up to 10, and makes the boost SO BASSY it's unusable. Then if I switch to another boost, it erases those settings too and jacks the Bottom Knob up also... I can't believe that Boss would release the BTS, Boss Tone Studio, and the firmware of the Katana in such a buggy state. If I want to use the Katana, I have to have it plugged into my computer if I want to make any changes to the hardware fx knobs or fx selections, between red, green, and yellow. SO BUGGY!

I played tube amps since the mid seventies...every make n model and size. Each one let me down, and all had just one thing they were good at. Also didn't necessarily sound that great on a gig. The katana is the first amp that's great at anything...with great versatility. And works at home or on a gig. Always sounds great to audience. Do yourself a favor and get a Boss cabinet. I ran my KTN-head through my Marshall 1960a 4x12 for a year and it never sounded as good as the speaker in my Katana 50. They use a ceramic speaker that's not only lighter, but handles the EQ far better.

and it's especially relevant in "video talking about tone tips for an amp". the way you interact with the strings, the way you pluck; at what angle and with which plectrum, all this changes harmonic content which later also can be modified with EQ and distortion, but the very first, dry harmonic series comes from your fingers, strings and pickups, simply put if there are no harmonics (except 50-60hz hum) - then there is nothing to change or tweak so no tone is possible. and if dont believe me then look at FFT based spectrogram and study harmonic series for yourself
