In this Modded Slay the Spire gameplay, Baalorlord does an Ascension 20 run with Silent. First, he gives tips on choosing a path and a starting bonus. Can someone explain why Panache wasn’t considered at 55:06 ? With a 5 energy, some 0 cost cards and Mummified Hand, I would have been all over that. What did I miss?

catalyst is the exception to the rule of "dont pick cards before you have things that synergize with them" its just too good at solving the most challenging fights in the game...other than slime boss

43:53 I'm failing to see how Escape Plan+ is better than Deflect+ when the block value is 2 more on the Deflect+. Wouldn't you rather have the deflect and option to play it?

Escape plan, is draw neutral. When you draw deflect, it takes up a draw where it might have been better to draw a different card. Escape plan replaces itself with the card you would have drawn anyway, and might give you block as well. This card draw is well worth the conditional block.

@@zelo1996 Okay I think the part I was forgetting was Baalor had Frozen eye, and I was getting stuck on the block value comparison. Since he had Frozen Eye, he had the option to decide whether he wanted the next card, regardless of it being a block card or not. So without FE, seems the Deflect would have been better.

@@MusikIsUniversal i think even without Frozen Eye, Escape plan is generally the better card here. Especially since the deck already had one deflect.There are no hard and fast rules in Slay the Spire, but card draw is very important. Escape plan is a card that draws a card and sometimes blocks (and sometimes it blocks quite often because Silent is a skill focused character). Deflect seems like it is nice, but if you draw two deflects when you are not getting attacked that's 2/5 cards that do nothing. Escape plan and back flip at least draw cards that you might want to play that turn instead ex: well laid plans, predator, malaise. Even when you want to block you might really want to have to drawn something other than deflect like piercing wail blocks for more against multi attacks. This second deflect would be good if there was an abundance of card draw, and we could very consistently cycle through your deck. This deck was not that (yet i think, i think the deck gets better at drawing cards later but i don't quite remember). When you add a card to a deck you have to think of the opportunity cost of drawing that card over the other cards currently in your deck and also what will be in your deck in the future (should you survive). This is what makes escape plan a very good card although it might be unintuitive. It is free, it is draw neutral, and it might block. Even if you already have or get really strong cards later, you don't need to worry about drawing Escape plan over it. The reason players don't pick up everyone they see is because there are enough enemies and relics in the Spire that can punish that type of skill spam deck ex: the Chosen fight, the Heart, Time Eater, Snecko, Choker. Anyway, long story short, Escape plan is a good card, really good if you get some dexterity.

Silent is probably the strongest at low levels. I really enjoy The Silent, but I think it is killed by one thing and one thing only - the Beat of Death by the heart. Nothing in the game challenges a character more than Beat of Death challenges Silent. The easiest scaling the Silent has is all of small incremental advantages, but the Beat of Death just absolutely punishes that.
