It is impossible to deflect Genichiro's 9-hit combo in it's entirety. The second last hit will always be a block. This is why for no damage runs, players back off when he does the combo.

Pontiff Sulyvhan. One of the hardest fights in the game, is against a pope. Admiitedly this guy is like the second greatest evil in the game (First being Aldrich). But still he's a pope. Never thought a pope could be so awesome/badass. Also he has the best theme transition from first phase to second phase.

You know, I constantly see people on Sulyvahn videos say "parry him!", but I have learned an even deeper secret... stay to his sides, and don't dodge backwards. Seriously. He will only do one of 3 easily readable attacks following one of his combo starters if you're to his side, and then he'll either stop his combo, giving you time to attack, or (rarely) do his spin-to-win, then stop his combo, giving you time to attack. Then phase 2 is way easier as long as you don't distance yourself from him unnecessarily, and take advantage of his lengthy summoning animation to rip him apart. I do use parry strats on him sometimes, but only if my build involves a weapon that can parry, and that's rare. Or if I'm using a greathammer.

Yep, definitely agreed on the positioning. Not only does it make him more predictable but some of his attacks will outright miss you due to his size. You definitely don't need to parry to make this boss simple, it's just that his speed and aggression are a significant step up from previous bosses so it takes awhile to get used to.

Just use a Bandit Knife with a Blood Gem. With it you can pretty much kill any Boss that can have Bleed Damage.

The funny thing about the Pontiff, is that the game warns you that he is going to be super aggressive, both before the fight and during the fight while he stands still if you pay attention. The items that you get from Vordt and the Sulyvahn beast at the entrance of Irithyll, the Pontiff's left and right eye, both have effects that activate as long as attacking persists. If you pay close attention to Sulyvahn and zoom in on him with binoculars or a bow before the fight, you can see he has a necklace full of these eyes, which means that he always keeps attacking. I really love Miyazaki for details like these, he builds the fight before you are even near it.

Depends. Once you get the timing and can see the blindspots in his swings his moveset becomes manageable even at his faster speed. The clone's movements mean much fewer blindspots, so I'd rather just kill the clone and keep him fast, but singular.

I've been playing through DS3 for the first time (new to soulsborne) and watching your videos after I beat each boss. It's fun to watch them struggle the same way I did with each boss haha. Pontiff was one of the most fun fights so far. His stage 1 felt a lot like Abyss Watchers stage 2, though with more complicated combos. Drinking Estus in this fight is an art all on its own

@@matheusbruno4221 Same. I saw phase 2 on my first attempt and nearly beat him then. After that it was numerous attempts and I died so quickly in a lot of them, which is fairly typical. I never got to phase 2 until my successful attempt and phase 2 is definitely easier than phase 1. I just beat Dragonslayer Armour, but so far I think Pontiff is still the toughest boss fight for me (at minimum he's taken the most attempts for me to beat, I think). I'm expecting Oceiros to be trouble though, because his phase 2 is so much like Ludwig's phase 1 and I had loads of trouble with Ludwig's phase 1 when I fought him.

I just killed this boss first try i feel accomplished. As a melee. A tip is to stay right behind him and continually turn. And wait for him to stop swinging and that’s you opening. Remember to dodge and watch his attacks, he’s got a large charge up on some his attacks. Stay close to him don’t be far out. I hope this helps
