"If you aren't using this guitar pedal with other effects then you are missing out on an amazing tone." ... apparently! :D And it's played through an amp in a room, mixed with some direct guitar sound. I think you've got a lot of things right here, better than most SY-1 demo videos, which usually feature 100% synth sound without other effects, without an expression pedal, and without an amp in a room. Your video features a much higher percentage of seemingly usable sounds compared to what I'm seeing in most other demos. Even the wacky sound effect programs are sensible here. Great job!

You have no idea how much this comment means to me. You made me shed a tear. I take great pride in my choices for tone and gear selection/adjustment. For 3 years I have worked my ASS OFF (gear sounds videos take about 8 hours to make, due to video/audio mixing and editing) making all of these videos and It is FINALLY paying off. Thank you so much for mentioning my audio quality. I am a sound engineer and a session musician so I think I have better audio than most demos (maybe all of them depending on the pedal) and I am happy you loved it! That level of sound quality will NEVER be compromised nor will my choices in patches etc. Thanks again!

@@GearSounds There's technical quality, and there's music. Your video showed something different - the SY-1, not 100% wet direct line sound, but using it as a _guitar effect pedal_, like you're supposed to use guitar effect pedals! I spent last night playing with the SY-1, previously having given up on everything but the first two lead sound settings. Can't play through actual amps late at night, but through the Positive Grid BIAS Amp 2 simulator's blues amp setting, and with other hardware effect pedals, AND with an expression pedal... "this changes everything", as they say. I found so many new useful and inspiring and fun sounds in there, all over the range of settings, both the "depth" and "tone" knobs. Previously I thought, most of the settings are useless, but now I'm like, most of the settings are useful! There are hidden gems like SFX 1 variation 3, LO-FI ... with the right depth and tone settings, and with an expression pedal, it becomes a formant filter that "talks". You can modify the "vowel" with the expression pedal, and you can make your guitar say things like "yeah", "ay ay ay" etc.

Yes, I want people to see how you would use it in real life. We all have OTHER pedals. No one buys a synth and plays it dry. Expect to see more of this type of mindset going forward. This channel EXPLODED and I have been so humbled by it. I had to hire an assistant to get the work finished. Don't give up on the SY-1, use the sequencer settings. Those are by FAR the most powerful in that pedal. USE AN EXP pedal and make SURE you are using the dry output and making a wet dry rig if possible. Use every function of the pedal and you will get usable results I promise. Yes, I really think guitar players are going to start using more synth pedals. I want to be the synth guitar channel if I'm honest. Yes, the vowel talking I figured out but I was shocked to see no one covering that stuff. I will continue to do my best to give you the best damn gear demos on youtube. I am so glad you appreciate all my hard work! @jbjb96913 жыл бұрын
@@GearSounds Well, I appreciate both. Actually, since you are kind enough to ask what I'd like to see next: what I'd like to see is how you go about soloing. I'm - like many around here I'm sure - a late beginner / early intermediate: I know my way around the neck with a few scales, but I feel "boxed". What I love about your solo is that it escapes the "go up / go down the scale". You are playing high notes, then low notes, in a very thoughtful and expressive way. A bit à la Gilmour (in your own style). How did you get there? what's the key to "breaking the scale box"? , I can follow your playing fret by fret, but what I'd love you to talk about is your mind, your approach to soloing freedom, if that makes sense. Thank you brother.
@GearSounds3 жыл бұрын
Wow, you've just given me a great idea for a video! This is a gear channel but we are all making music. There is no reason I can't talk about my approach to soloing. Not only that but what you're asking are important questions. In a nutshell it's about trying to get the melody that you hear in your head out on the instrument. When you see me jumping around the fretboard like that it's because I'm hearing a melody in a different place and a lot of times I don't land in the place that I want but I'm always landing at a place that exists in the scale. That way even if I land in a place that isn't correct I can move to the next note in the scale to hit what I was hearing and begin the melody that I wanted. In other words I'm always singing with the guitar I'm never noodling notes. When we sing we never scale up and down and if we do it's rare which is why you see me soloing that way. I'm basically singing. I'll go more in depth in a video.

Hey, fantastic demo, by the way. I'm curious about how you set up the expression pedal. I'm using the Boss EV-5 expression pedal, but I'm not getting the same noticeable difference as you are. Any advice or tips you could share? Thanks!
@GearSounds10 ай бұрын
Yes, you'll have to take note of which setting you are on as depending on the setting your expression pedal Will either control the tone, the rate or in rare cases the modulation amount. If you aren't hearing a large difference make sure you set the knob to the maximum value you want to allow it to go to. I believe if you set the knob that is altered by the expression pedal low then the maximum value that it can reach becomes lower as well. I sold this pedal to replace it with the SY200 and now the GM 800 this year but I still remember that.

In other words, SY-1 before overdrive/distortion?
@GearSounds11 ай бұрын
I don't see any issues with that setup however I would experiment with having the synth in front of everything including in front of the compression and noise suppressor. Yes you will give the synthesizer a very clean signal if you put those first but you may also confuse it as it is expecting to hear noise, that you might find unpleasant in order to do its analysis.
@GearSounds11 ай бұрын
Yes basically, if you're only concern is where to place the synth in relation to other pedals I always put it first. You want to synthesize your signal first and if you are splitting it out that's something to keep in mind also since you can get the clean guitar signal separate from the SY1 through the loop.
